I'm late to the party, I realize, but I noticed we haven't discussed this game at all here in the forums and I just finished the "true" ending this past week. I didn't think that this game would live up to the hype I'd seen for it, based solely upon the visuals, but I have to say that I was really blown away with it in the end. The personality in the character design both in look and in action, the lovely and wide range of music, and the ever-changing combat system made this look like a huge game, not just the sum of a really clever guy and some of his friends.
So, if you've played it, tell me about your favorite plotlines, characters, music, etc. And if you are into the music especially, note that the soundtrack is now on iTunes and Spotify too. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I played it last year in one sitting for an Extra Life broadcast. Here's what I wrote in the "What Games Are You Playing at the Moment?" thread:
Quote Undertale - weird, subversive indie RPG. Hilarious dialog and characters, surreal setting and situations, and the interesting twist of being able to resolve any random encounter peacefully instead of with violence. I did a "normal" run of the game, playing about half-violently and half-peacefully. The end sequences are... extremely memorable. I need to try and a "pacifist" run of this game ASAP. Really fascinating exploration of the JRPG genre, using a mix of NES-RPG and shmup mechanics. Undertale is unique and definitely a good RPG, but MAN is the internet reaction strong. Like, I thought it was very good, but it's probably not in my persona top twenty all-time. But from its reaction you'd think it's the new generation's Chrono Trigger. -------------------- |

This game seems to basically be a text adventure but using JRPG mechanics.
A friend of mine got me to play the demo a while back, before it was released. He subsequently played it and got both the neutral and the good endings. Of course, the internet being what it is, I know a ton about the game, and I haven't even played the game proper. At this point, I'm more likely to buy the soundtrack than the game. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. So, I finally bit the bullet and got this game. I don't know why I resisted for so long but I think I needed to wait until all the hype and praise being shouted about this game died down a bit before I could approach it. I'm not too far in at all, maybe two hours, but I will say that I already am enjoying myself a great deal. First of all, the music so far has been incredible. Absolutely top notch. The battle system is a little frustrating at times but dynamic enough that it never feels stale or tedious.
I, uh, accidentally killed someone without meaning to and the game has been laying the guilt on thick about it ever since. Now, traditionally, killing off characters in a video game is just my jam. I'm the guy who murderhobos his way through rpgs, renegade path every time, but this game has me genuinely feeling guilty and I love it. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Quote At this point, I'm more likely to buy the soundtrack than the game. Do. It's totally worth it. I mean, I'd recommend the game, too, but if it's not your thing the music is still wonderful. Quote I, uh, accidentally killed someone without meaning to and the game has been laying the guilt on thick about it ever since. That bit was killer. There are a lot of moments like that, I've found, and they're just masterfully put together. Also, I tried doing an all-violence playthrough and I didn't have the emotional fortitude for. Instead, I watched it on YouTube, and *still* got called on it by a game I wasn't even playing. Fave character: Papyrus. He believes in you. He's cool in a "trying to be cool but is actually really dorky" way, and it works grand for him. -------------------- I shall now return to my cave |

Quote (Lurker @ 19th August 2016 21:57) Also, I tried doing an all-violence playthrough and I didn't have the emotional fortitude for. Instead, I watched it on YouTube, and *still* got called on it by a game I wasn't even playing. Several of us have talked about that in chat over time, particularly as I was playing through, and out of four or five people who had played or were playing it, only one said something other than "I just don't have it in me to try that." -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I got through Lesser Dog, was about to save and make it permanent, and that was my breaking point. I think Lesser Dog is my favorite character that doesn't get much characterization.
Last time I played through it was mostly for the dogs, honestly. -------------------- I shall now return to my cave |

I just started playing this--my cousin's showing it to me--and God is it good! I told my cousin that "the date..." (if you know what I'm talking about) is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a video game.

In chat Gabe, and then Neal, shared this with me: https://determination-ut.bandcamp.com/album...the-purple-side
Everyone and their brother are doing Undertale remixes, I think (because the soundtrack is so strong, of course), but this is really good. I'll need to check out the other ones these guys did too. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Oh wow. I bought their other album already, but didn't even notice this. Thanks for pointing it out.
