Here they are, your eight prompts for the new Rare Entries game. It's easy: first, take a look at each of these prompts and come up with an answer for each of them. Second, email your eight answers (along with your name, so I know who you are) to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com. Send this email no later than Friday the 28th of March. I'll score all of the entries on Saturday morning and hopefully will have them posted back here on Saturday afternoon, after which I'll unlock the topic and leave the game open to discussion. And feel free to PM me if you want to know anything about the game, whether it's the rules, the prompts, or what have you.
And yes, prizes. If there are under 20 contestants, then the prize is $5 US. Between 20 and 40 contestants will result in a prize of $10, and over 40 will result in a prize of $15. I would really like at least twenty people playing, so please do so! A number of participants have mentioned that they'll pass the prize on to the 2nd-place finisher if they win. I'll also be playing, but my answers were completed prior to making this thread and I am honor-bound not to change them. I'm also not eligible to win a prize, of course. But enough technical nonsense, let's get it on. The prompts: 1. Name a Final Fantasy Tactics class that can equip robes* 2. Name a song played on the title instrument in The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3. Name a character from a Final Fantasy game that is able to learn black or white magic spells naturally, without the aid of Materia, Espers, GFs, class-changing, the Sphere Grid, or the License Board; learning from weapons is okay, but only for FF IX characters 4. Name one of the seventeen playable characters in Super Street Fighter II: Turbo 5. Name a summon spell from Final Fantasy V 6. Name a playable character in Mother, Earthbound, or Mother 3** 7. Name a command Materia from Final Fantasy VII 8. Name one of the sixteen newcomers to the roster of playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl*** Notes: *You can use special character classes as answers, but only playable ones – no Assassin, no Holy Priest, etc. **”Playable” means controllable by the player, not just a tag-along NPC like Buzz Buzz or EVE. ***Just so we’re clear, we’re looking for characters playable in Brawl but not playable in the original or in Melee. Four of them are secret characters. Recommended research sites: Caves of Narshe Ocarina of Time songs Street Fighter characters Smash Bros. Brawl characters Mother characters Earthbound characters Mother 3 characters Remember, send in your entries to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com no later than this Friday. That gives you about three and a half days. Now get to it! This post has been edited by Neal on 26th March 2008 01:23 -------------------- |

Thank you, everyone who played, because we got a very solid 26 entrants for this Rare Entries game. The score distributions were great, the level of cooperation from everyone was great, and as a result one of you has a $10 US prize to call his own. Who, you ask? Well, congratulations to Shotgunnova, who had the winning entry with a score of 96 (the only entry under 100). Here's Shotgunnova's winning entry, as well as the pick distributions and some commentary by yours truly.
Shotgunnova's Answers 1. Engineer (2) 2. Saria's Song (1) 3. Tellah (2) 4. Dee Jay (3) 5. Carbunkle (2) 6. Poo (4) 7. Manipulate (1) 8. Pokemon Trainer (1) Winning score: 96 Second place: painreaver (192 points) Third place: Galsic (720 points) Fourth place: laszlow (810 points) The mean score was 18,674 and the median score was 3,474. The lowest score was a whopping 221, 760, in which the contestant chose the most popular entry in six of the eight categories (the illegal entry was made by someone else). 1. Name a Final Fantasy Tactics class that can equip robes This was the first prompt in the first rare entries game, so I decided to re-use it. It had good distribution, with no entry being selected more than 4 times . There were a few missed opportunities for perfect entries (Summoner, Mediator, and Holy Swordsman come to mind), but overall it wasn't a problematic category. Distribution: Oracle (4) Calculator (4) Time Mage (4) Geomancer (3) Priest (2) Engineer (2) Ramza (2) Divine Knight (2) Lancer (1) Onion Knight (1) (I didn't mention that it was PS1 classes only) Knight (1) 2. Name a song played on the title instrument in The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time This was another one with good distribution, but Bolero of Fire and Nocturne of Shadow both had five entries. I assume that's because the names sound pretty damn cool. Distribution: Bolero of Fire (5) Nocturne of Shadow (5) Serenade of Water (3) Song of Time (3) Scarecrow's Song (2) Song of Storms (2) Requiem of Spirit (2) Zelda's Lullaby (1) Saria's Song (1) Epona's Song (1) Minuet of Forest (1) 3. Name a character from a Final Fantasy game that is able to learn black or white magic spells naturally, without the aid of Materia, Espers, GFs, class-changing, the Sphere Grid, or the License Board; learning from weapons is okay, but only for FF IX characters I probably should apologize for this category. It was confusingly-worded, had a lot of conditions, and didn't have a very large sample to choose from. I received a lot of emails asking to clarify this, and in general it wasn't a good choice for a prompt. The most popular choice was somehow Porom, with seven entries, but the real surprise is that no one picked Cecil. Also, one person picked the illegal entry of Banon, so for that category he scored a 25 (n-1 points). Distribution: Porom (7) Celes (4) Terra (3) Rydia (3) Tellah (2) Palom (2) Rosa (1) Eiko (1) Dagger (1) Vivi (1) Banon (illegal entry) 4. Name one of the seventeen playable characters in Super Street Fighter II: Turbo There was good distribution on this, but it's also a great lesson as to how to think during a rare entries game - the most popular pick was T.Hawk, while Ryu, M. Bison, and Chun Li among others all had zero entries. Everyone is going to try to avoid the popular, high-exposure characters, so as a result picking one of those high-exposure characters can be a good strategy! Distribution: T.Hawk (5) Zangief (4) Dee Jay (3) Sagat (3) Blanka (3) Cammy (2) Ken (2) Guile (2) Fei Long (1) Dhalsim (1) 5. Name a summon spell from Final Fantasy V This could have had good distribution, but a lot of people had the brilliant idea of choosing one of those first three summons that no one uses. Whoops. Distribution: Remora (6) Sylph (5) Ifrit (4) Chocobo (3) Carbunkle (2) Shiva (1) Ramuh (1) Shoat (1) Golem (1) Syldra (1) Bahamut (1) 6. Name a playable character in Mother, Earthbound, or Mother 3** Ness and Poo were the only fours, and the only characters no one used were Pippi, Kumatora, and Jeff. I think it's actually a near-perfect symmetrical Gaussian distribution! Distribution: Ness (4) Poo (4) Loid (3) Salsa (3) Ana (2) Lucas (2) Flint (2) Duster (2) Paula (1) Ninten (1) Teddy (1) Boney (1) 7. Name a command Materia from Final Fantasy VII This was the most problematic category of all, and all because of one materia: Sense. ELEVEN people chose Sense, while a few others (notably Steal) went unchosen. Sense was kind of the Davidson or George Mason of this competition - it destroyed entire brackets. Distribution: Sense (11) Deathblow (3) Enemy Skill (3) Master Command (2) Throw (1) Morph (1) Manip (1) Slash-All (1) W-Summon (1) W-Magic (1) W-Item (1) 8. Name one of the sixteen newcomers to the roster of playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl*** Again, very good distribution here. The only entries not chosen by anyone were Ike and Zero Suit Samus. Distribution: Olimar (4) Lucas (3) Wario (2) Lucario (2) Wolf O'Donnell (2) Sonic the Hedgehog (2) Meta Knight (2) King DeDeDe (2) R.O.B. (2) Pokemon Trainer (1) Pit (1) Solid Snake (1) Diddy Kong (1) Toon Link (1) So that's all. I'll be getting back to SGN about his gift certificate, but until then please give me feedback and also tell me if you want to hold a second round! If I can get another 20+ players, then I'll definitely run another one. But until then, discuss! This post has been edited by laszlow on 29th March 2008 23:23 -------------------- |

Time Mage (4)
Bolero of Fire (5) Rydia (3) Zangief (4) Shoat (1) Lucas (2) Deathblow (3) Wario (2) Total: 2880 I considered Ryu over Zangief, Morph over Deathblow and Zero Suit Samus over Wario. Also about a day after I submitted, I thought about Cecil. Ah well, i'm definitely up for another round! |

Apparently, I don't quite understand how the scorings are figured out (cuz thems're some big scores!), but I guess it ain't important.
And, yeah, I thought I was being really sneaky with T. Hawk. Goes to show how sneaky this whole game can get, which is cool . -------------------- |

So, you had to choose answers that weren't used by other people to score high? I didn't know.
My answers 1) Knight (1) 2) Song of Time (3) 3) Terra (3) 4) Ken (2) 5) Chocobo (3) 6) Ness (4) 7) Deathblow (3) 8) Sonic the Hedgehog (2) Total: 1296; not that bad, I guess I can see why I didn't win If only I knew how the game was scored beforehand. Del - I think we cleared this up in chat.
Galsic - to calculate your score, take the number beside each of your entries and multiply all eight together. -------------------- |

I was also tempted by Remora, and I fell into Porom.
1. Geomancer (3) 2. Requiem of Spirit (2) 3. FuSoYa, changed to Porom because FuSoYa doesn't technically learn any spells in the course of your contact with him in the game. So, Porom (7) 4. Blanka (3) 5. Sylph (5) 6. Loid (or Lloyd, as I call him) (3) 7. Morph (1) 8. Wolf (Wolf O'Donnell) (2) Also, laszlow, did you forget Pippi? You can control her actions, and she does gain EXP. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokmon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. Would've been 384 if I'd have gone for Steal like instinct told me, but I switched to Sense at the last minute, trying to be 'clever.' I'd definitely be up for another round, this was fun. Plus, I learnt a few tidbits about games I haven't played before, which is always a bonus. Congrats to Shotgunnova on the prize, too. |

Why did all of you pick Porom like I did??? There are Twins! Palom - 2, Porom - 7?!?!?
Also, anyone who picked Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, Scarecrow's Song, or Saria's Song should be given the max score for the turn, as those are Fairy Ocarina songs, that just happen to be playable on the OoT. I guess I'm just not near as original as I thought. What's really interesting is how playing the odds with a common entry managed to afford a lot of people a lot of points. (Or few points, however you want to see it...) I'm totally down for a round 2... I'm pretty sure that now I know the psychology of the enternants, my submissions will be a lot more original. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Alright, there seems to be decent interest, so I'll run the contest again. Once I can track down Josh online, I'll set up an AmaCoN gift certificate for SGN (sorry for the delay, I swear I'm not holding out on you). In the meantime, expect the new prompts to appear tomorrow afternoon.
And in addition, this next event will be only for honor and have no prize, UNLESS we have more participants than last time. That's right - if we have 26 or fewer contestants then there won't be any prize, but it will be $10 again if we have 27 or more. That is all. -------------------- |

Quote Why did all of you pick Porom like I did??? There are Twins! Palom - 2, Porom - 7?!?!? I picked Palom. Like everyone else, I randomly went through the list of materia and randomly picked of course, Sense. And for the Summon in FFV, I went with one of the more obvious summons, Shiva. And I see Toekutr and I are the ones that picked Sonic. This post has been edited by yomama on 30th March 2008 16:39 |

OK, here's round 2. Remember, there will be another prize if we get 27 or more entrants, but no prize if we get 26 or below. So encourage as many people as you can to play! You have until this Friday, April 4th at midnight to play, giving you approximately four and a half days. Once again, I will score these on Saturday morning and post the results Saturday afternoon. Send your answers either via PM or via email to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com. After the results are posted, this thread will be unlocked and everyone can discuss the results.
But one more thing - these things are always better with more people, so I encourage all CoN users to take part. Last round was very promising, but I want more. MORE! The Prompts: (odd-numbered prompts written by Shotgunnova, even-numbered prompts written by laszlow) 1. Name a team playable in Tecmo Bowl for the NES 2. Name a boss enemy from Final Fantasy I* 3. Name a skill learned by the Dancer class in Final Fantasy Tactics** 4. Name a subtitle to any Castlevania video game*** 5. Name a weapon from Fear Effect or Fear Effect 2 6. Name a town from Final Fantasy VI 7. Name a type of camouflage in Metal Gear Solid 3**** 8. Name a female playable character from any Final Fantasy game numbered IV – X. Notes: *The second versions of the elemental fiends in the final dungeon do NOT count as additional bosses; I will be pretty generous otherwise, though. **This can be any skill learned by a Dancer, not just Dances; also, please use names from the PS1 version. ***For example, “Symphony of the Night,” “Harmony of Dissonance,” “Simon’s Quest,” etc. If it’s separated by a colon, then it’s a subtitle. Also, only use the American names. ****Only camo found in the original will count; no downloadable camo, no new camo from Subsistence. Everything in the guide below is fine. Recommended research sites: Caves of Narshe Tecmo Bowl teams Castlevania game list SGN’s Fear Effect guide SGN’s Fear Effect 2 guide MGS3 Camouflage guide FFSpirit (for FF VIII – X characters) Mods: please lock this topic ASAP This post has been edited by laszlow on 31st March 2008 18:24 -------------------- |

Everyone has until tomorrow morning to send in entries. We have 24 so far, and while that's a good number it's not enough to create a prize for this round. So, if you want me to get a better sample size and have a chance to earn some AmaCoN money, then send in a submission!

Alright! With exactly 27 entrants this time, we had just enough to qualify for a prize. So everyone extend congratulations to FallingHeart, who won a very close game with a submission containing four perfect entries. So without further ado, here’s FallingHeart’s winning entry as well as the distributions for each category:
FallingHeart’s Answers 1. Denver (1) 2. Garland (2) 3. Last Dance (2) 4. Dawn of Sorrow (1) 5. RL 480 (3) 6. Mobliz (2) 7. Snake (1) 8. Quistis (1) Final Score: 24 Second place: Sweetdude (32) Third place: mertinatron (48) Fourth place: No-Name (270) The mean score was 2,555 and the median score was 1620. The scores this time were much lower overall, but that’s probably because there was only one entry chosen more than five times (there weren’t any WTFs like Sense in the previous round). Here’re your distributions: 1. Name a team playable in Tecmo Bowl for the NES Distributions here were a little strange, with three cities in different parts of the country each chosen five times and no one choosing San Francisco. I probably shouldn’t have gone with my home team on this one…. Washington (5) Seattle (5) Cleveland (5) Chicago (2) Los Angeles (2) Dallas (2) Indianapolis (2) Minnesota (1) Denver (1) Miami (1) New York (1) 2. Name a boss enemy from Final Fantasy I* If there was one bracket slayer in this round, it was Astos. For some reason the dude outside of Elfland was more popular than any other boss in the game by a significant margin. Astos (6) Zombie Dragon (3) Lich (2) Kraken (2) Evil Eye (2) Chaos (2) Garland (2) Vampire (2) Pisco Demon (2) Tiamat (1) Marilith (1) WarMech (1) (yes, I counted him as a boss, because he is listed in CoN’s section on FF I bosses) Pirates (1) 3. Name a skill learned by the Dancer class in Final Fantasy Tactics** A good mix here, with no answer selected more than four times. Honestly, who uses Dancers anyway? (don't respond to that; I acknowledge and understand their usefulness, but I don;t like using them anyhow) A Save (4) Polka Polka (4) Disillusion (4) Witch Hunt (3) Fly (3) Slow Dance (3) Nameless Dance (2) Last Dance (2) Jump+3 (1) Wiznaibus (1) 4. Name a subtitle to any Castlevania video game*** Great mix here, with no entry chosen more than three times. I can probably blame that on the large selection of answers to choose from. Also, I can’t believe that no one picked Symphony of the Night! Of course, you all probably assumed that I had chosen it, so… whoops. Circle of the Moon (3) Bloodlines (3) Dracula’s Curse (3) Order of Shadows (2) Legacy of Darkness (2) Portrait of Ruin (2) The Dracula X Chronicles (2) Belmont’s Revenge (2) Harmony of Dissonance (2) Legends (1) Dracula X SNES (1) Simon’s Quest (1) Aria of Sorrow (1) Dawn of Sorrow (1) Curse of Darkness (1) 5. Name a weapon from Fear Effect or Fear Effect 2 This entry was all about the number three. Nothing was chosen more than that number of times, but plenty of scores have digits that add up to 3/6/9 thanks to this category. No idea how or why that happened. Arc Taser (3) GL 150 (3) Shot Pistol (3) Mach Pistol (3) RL 480 (3) Brass Knuckles (3) Knife (2) Uzi (2) Shotgun (2) Smackjack (1) EMP (1) SS 2000 (1) 6. Name a town from Final Fantasy VI What’s so special about Kohlingen? Well, it was chosen five times and Rachel lives there, but that’s about it. I remember I used this one in an earlier Rare Entries, but it’s a neutral-enough category to be worth using again. Kohlingen (5) Nikeah (4) Albrook (3) Tzen (3) Zozo (2) South Figaro (2) Narshe (2) Mobliz (2) Doma (1) Maranda (1) Figaro (1) Jidoor (1) 7. Name a type of camouflage in Metal Gear Solid 3**** The most mixed category so far. Only a handful of threes, and more perfect entries than I care to see, honestly. Splitter (3) Spider (3) Zombia (3) Moss (2) Rain Drop (2) Cold War (2) Black (2) Tuxedo (1) Fly (1) Tree Bark (1) Kabuki (1) Snow (1) Olive Drab (1) Animal (1) Naked (1) Hornet Bees (1) Snake (1) 8. Name a female playable character from any Final Fantasy game numbered IV – X. Another reason of why sometimes the obvious answer is a good answer. Barely-playable characters like Edea and Beatrix each had multiple entries while heroines like Rosa, Lenna, Aeris, Rinoa, Dagger, and Yuna were completely ignored. Freya and Kururu were the two most popular picks, which I suppose means that they neither obscure enough to be “tricky” nor obvious enough for people not to choose them. Freya (4) Krile/Kururu (4) Terra (3) Edea (3) Beatrix (2) Eiko (2) Rikku (2) Tifa (1) Porom (1) Quistis (1) Celes (1) Faris (1) Rydia (1) Quina (1) (yes, I understand that Quina’s gender is a topic of some debate, but I decided to accept it as an answer) So that’s all. I now owe FallingHeart ten bucks, and I’ll put out a third round if you guys want me to. That’s all I got, so let the discussion begin! -------------------- |

Oh wow, this is pretty unexpected. Last round I spent a lot of time making my entry but this time I literally spent around 7 minutes making mine. Goes to show this is a lot of luck, I guess. I can't believe I got away with Snake camo though, that was the best camo in the game behind stealth and moss, I thought it would be pretty popular. Quitis too, surprisingly unpopular.
