I haven't had time to read more than a few screens of this, but I'm guessing there's some really interesting info therein. Feel free to discuss while I catch up!

Lots of interesting stuff in there. The fact they're saying they made the game in just one year is particularly mind boggling. I wouldn't have thought that would be possible. It seems like they took some huge risks with it. I can't see any of the big publishers behaving that way these days.

And it sounds like Nintendo were livid about losing Final Fantasy. No surprise really. But who can blame Square? So many reasons to jump ship and Sony offered them so many great incentives.

Nintendo, I guess.

I really think Nintendo are kind of stolid in their practices. They are not a company that takes a large number of risks. Their risk management philosophy is all about Occam's Razor. I think there's some famous quote by some guy about "whatever the market will bear."

Sony, on the other hand, are a clever and kind of cool company, if you've ever read about what they started as. Nintendo were a manufacturer of Hanafuda Cards before WWI even began, really. Long before.

Sony started business after, you know...uh, World War II.

Their stated mission was to advance Japan's technological achievement...I'd say that they're doing their job pretty well. Japanese technology is now in almost every single house in the world.

Nintendo, on the other hand, are primarily a gaming company, so one can hardly blame them for sticking to their guns.

Very interesting. I knew that FFVII was advertised heavily but I didn't realize just how much of the budget advertising took up.

I just got around to reading this, and I'm glad I did. This is amazing. I checked on their site, and they did another one of these with Street Fighter 2, but they need to do this with other games. Much of this info I new in general, but I didn't know in detail. So, it was cool to hear it directly from the people involved. I also thought that it was cool because it personalized the developers to me. Since I can't speak Japanese, and they rarely do interviews, it allowed me to see a side of each of them that I hadn't seen before. Having Nomura, Sakaguchi, and Kitase going back and forth with each other was awesome.
