The plot is terrible, and not even on Vincent's part.
But since you asked for backstory , here I am.

His father, Grimorie, was a scientist along with Lucrecia. Lucrecia released Chaos, and Grimorie died defending her. But she managed to seal Chaos away or some such (I don't remember exactly how that went.) Flash forward a bit and then you've got Vincent Valentine, as a Turk who was guarding Lucrecia. He falls in love with her, and she seems to return his affections- but then marries Hojo. She gets sick from having the embryonic Sephiroth (who IS Hojo's son, not Vincent's) injected with Jenova cells. Vincent confronts Hojo one too many times, and Hojo shoots him.
Lucrecia, distraught, keeps Vincent alive by putting Chaos inside him... And then doing experiments on him.
That's right! Lucrecia did all the experiments on Vincent!
And that's his backstory in a nutshell.

It seems to be an enjoy or dislike kinda' game.

I had fun with it, enjoyed the flavour and the change up in FF gameplay style. It's also a challenge, for sure.

The backstory definitely kept me into it, even if it was told in a very Saturday morning anime kinda' way, I just wanted to know more, and it helped with that.

I'm disappointed, though unsurprised it never received a sequel, after having such an huge tease at the end of it!

Anyhow, if you find it on the cheap, check it out, for sure! It's got some good times in it, at least.

Oh, it wasn't the gameplay that I disliked.
I just didn't like the /plot/. That and it demonized Hojo, who while not a good person, was not bent on world domination/destruction.

I don't fully recall the plot after so long, but yeah, he more just had misguided ideals on genetic research and such...

But perhaps he was a twisted scientist who intended to use his precious creations to overthrow the corporation that used him like a tool? That wouldn't be so hard to believe, as so many plots before and after have been framed as such, no?

Yeah I think sometimes we underestimate just how evil hojo is I mean when you create a monster like sephiroth and inject people with jenova cells you've got to have some sort of destructive goal in mind

Goal: Yes.
Destructive: No.
Hojo is a stereotypical mad scientist, almost to a T, but he seems to lack any "world destruction" goals. He simply wants to know. He lacks any real animosity- think about it. Does Hojo do anything "cruel" that isn't somehow related to his work? No. He's snarky, but being snarky doesn't equal evil. What Hojo wants, in my opinion, is just knowledge .
The things he's willing to do to get that knowledge are indeed terrible, but the point is, I highly doubt he'd try to destroy the world like that.
Leave that to Sephiroth.

But why would he create all of these killing machines if not to use them to kill

Just to see if they could.
Do you know what Sephiroth was made for? It wasn't to be a war machine.
He was made to lead ShinRa to the Promised Land.
He just so happened to be physically superior.
And then came along Aerith's mother, who was a real Ancient, and so Sephiroth was repurposed by ShinRa. Not by Hojo himself.

I personally like Dirge of Cerberus. I came up with a similar idea only it was Final Fantasy VII: My Bloody Valentine. I know of course it's not exact to my formula but the story seems awesome. So far and I played pretty deep into it. But that's my view.

Personally, I wouldn't have involved Hojo at all. Maybe in flashbacks to show why Vincent didn't like him (with his being twitterpated with Lucrecia and whatnot) but seriously. His involvement in DoC was unneeded.
