Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy Tactics > Do you use monsters in your party?

Posted by: Holy Knight 5th June 2008 08:18
I use one Blue dragon in my party (i think Red dragon is better than Blue dragon), i don't poach my Blue dragon because i like her and didn't want to poach her (Doesn't matter if your monster is a male or female), but i poach the other monsters.

I used chocobos for awhile, and found the black one specifically useful because of the HUGE movement bonus.

I tried levelling a red one, but it eventually got too tedious and boring when i could just continue the storyline with my generics.

Posted by: dont chocobos rule? 5th June 2008 12:30
i had all three dragons, all three tiamat-things, and all three chocobos, each named after some sort of FF lore. but because i kept getting special characters, i had to release the weaker ones. i rarely use them in battle, i just love how awesome they are.

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 5th June 2008 13:41
They are fun to use. Dragons and Chocobos are very useful, but I like using skeletons and kitty-cats. Not 'cuz they're particularly powerful, but it's just cool to have those things hangin' around. I also use some monsters strictly for poaching.

I'll get a couple red or blue dragons with Reis occasionally. It makes her main skillset interesting, for a change. The Tiamats are just nasty as all heck-- sending them up against multiple enemies is usually no problem; they have nasty area effects, lots of HP , and should you choose to, you can send in somebody with monster skill to give them an extra ability. I even played around with a sacred for a little bit.... but mainly, I poach the crap out of them. You should see how many uribos I send off to the fur shop; I try to get a least 5 ribbons (and a few chantages), so I can make an all girl/all status defense party. Steimsons you get from poaching hydras are nice, too (the whale whisker is kinda moot; by the time you get it, you're really not using oracles any more.) I'll pick up a minotaur to breed a few sacreds as soon as I get to the lancer path. (Holy lances are the best early on in the game). I try to keep one or two slots open in my group, so I can breed extra monsters to poach. Just pick up the monster of the class necessary to poach whatever goods you want, head to a spot on the map where two cities sit side-by-side, then walk between the two cities to get the monsters you want to poach, then enter a battle by a city with a fur shop. Save, fight, buy, lather, rinse, repeat. thumbup.gif

In the Orignal PSOne, There was only enough space for one monster so I gave that spot to a Red Chocobo. Thanks to the fact that the PSP remake has more rooms, I can now include 1 Red Dragon, 1 Tiamat, & 1 Dark Behemont

Yes, but only chocobos, because they look cool when your characters ride them. The only problem I have with monsters is that their breeding can be annoying.

Posted by: jacemm7283 6th June 2008 01:32
yes, the breeding is EXTREMELY annoying. esp if you are traveling long distances on the map. i personally use a dark behemoth, and any type of dragon will do also. occasionally i will use a hydra ( i think thats what theyre called ) a dark behemoth lvl 99 is a killing machine.

in the early parts of the game, i use chocobos all the time. the movement range of a char riding one is excellent.

Am i the only one here that actually uses Woodmen in fight? (Ocassionally)

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 6th June 2008 03:32
I don't fight with them, I just poach them because they yeield awesome equipment as do the little pigs.

Posted by: Anh 6th June 2008 15:42
Yea, I mostly poach them.

Mediators are awesome. You can win almost any battle by inviting lol.

Nope, I use a Taiju to fight, though I think Trents are prettier (pinch.gif I am such a girl, lol). I also use either blue or red dragon to team up with Reis to rock the house, and Swift (renamed from Boco) is in a lot of my training fights because, if I have to resort to friendly fire, he's a good, cheap healer. I DO keep the piggies around for poaching, but for other species I try to poach in the wild. Sucks there are NEVER any wild Wildblows. Doesn't that make their name a lie?

Posted by: dibtra 3rd August 2008 15:57
yes, i use 1 Tiamat, 1 Blue dragon, 1 Red dragon, and 2 dragon.

Posted by: Neal 3rd August 2008 22:39
I honestly feel like I would use them more if I could neuter them, as it's really annoying to have to clear out my inventory of their eggs all the time.

Does Dragon Reis lay eggs? Because that would be hilarious and creepy.

Posted by: Dark Paladin 3rd August 2008 22:53
I kept Boco, but I don't think I really used him outside of level/JP grinding battles. I found Choco Cure very useful for this, but not so much when my guys aren't clumped together as they would be in a normal battle.

I don't remember that happening, but I'm only about 80% sure that it didn't.

I'll find out, since I am doing the side quest even as we speak. I will report back when I have the answer! biggrin.gif

Having walked the length and width of Ivalice several times, I can safely declare that Dragon Reis does not lay eggs.

I only use the unique monsters. Any other monster in my squad has an upcoming appointment with a character equipped with secret hunt.

It's not that I don't think any of the monsters are cool, but there is an opportunity cost to using a chocobo over a ninja. I simply prefer the abilities of a generic to a monster.

Posted by: Eric 4th October 2008 16:12
If the terrain looks rough, I'll sometimes switch my Bard Keeton for My Red Chocobo Surt. My Knight is my best fighter, but not if he's to far away to hit you know?

Posted by: ILoveMoombas! 5th October 2008 17:17
I only keep the special monsters. Everything else gets poached. Sometimes I feel bad about killing the pig monsters though... they're just so cute!

Posted by: Max 7th October 2008 14:56
Controlled breeding and poaching is the only reason for me to keep monsters around, near the end of the game that reason is void. Once you start catching Chaos blades and Javelins(II), most of their equipment is no longer useful.

I simply just find a good combination of Dragons and Hydras to poach on a Deep Dungeon map. Saves the hassle or end-game breeding and enables you to run a full onslaught of geared characters to one hit the monsters.

In the PS1 version there weren't enough slots for me to consider keeping monsters. Human characters are more interesting. the PSP lets you keep 24 characters, though, so I have a Red dragon and a Tiamat. Having a dragon enables Reis' full abilities, and a Reis/Dragon team is hard to beat!

Nice Dude! Same Here! Thank god they expanded the party limit so that you could now keep all the special characters and have some monsters!

one word... no.

Their lack of skill growth and lack of customization annoys me.

I mean, they could have at least made so you could choose between a couple of reaction, support, and movement skills so you could modify them and make them stronger. They could have even made them so you could buy a couple of attack skills with JP, which would give me an incentive to use them.

Heck yeah I use monsters!

Where would my Reis be without her Hydra and/or Tiamat?
I grab a Hyuudra at Nelveska Temple every time, just so I can breed the awesomeness.

I'll breed for poaching from time to time, usually pigbears, but the only other monster I'll use in a fight is a red Chocobo. Dragoner has innate Monster Skill, which gives Dark Whisper (hits 6x) to a Tiamat and Choco Cure to a red chocobo.

I haven't used dragons since the first time I used a hydra. Triple Flame is a bit like Truth/Untruth in that you get random hits on the selected squares, but Truth is 2v3, so it's hard to limit the area of effect. The three-headed breath abilities are all 2v0, so it's not hard to land all three hits on the same square. Did I mention you always get three hits? On top of that, Fly makes Hydras the best step monster - you can go up OR down with their help, no walking around. Great in the Deep Dungeon. And correct me if I'm wrong, but Triple Breath can hit up to six units at the same time.

Dragoner Reis + Hydras = Very Yes.

I would probably be more inclined to use them if their breeding didn't get out of control, or if scenarios allowed more than 5 people at a time. I can't imagine anyone dedicating and all monster party through the entire game, but i'd love to see it.

And i agree with ArcKnight, some JP skills would a been awesome.

If special monsters count then yes all the time sa-science.gif but if not then only to pouch blush.gif

Posted by: Mr.Vercetti 20th November 2008 11:55
In PSP Version i never used a monster in my battles, just because i don't need them. The new equipments made in Melee and Rendevouz work better than monsters. Valhalla combo with Brigand's Gloves is simply tank your Dark Knight. While in PSX Version i usally take one Red Chocobo, one Blue Dragon and a Tiamat, replacing Rad, Alicia and Lavian if i don't develope'em. Then i have always a pig por poaching him. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Zjiin 20th November 2008 12:27
I was thinking about starting a new game with a monster-only team, but what do you guys think i should use? Obviously for healers I'd want some Chocobos with Cure. What would be the best other ones to fill up my team? I don't really care for dragons since they really dont do anything special and have low mobility. Hydras would be cool later on in the game, but by then i'll have my team built up.

suggestions?

Monster Walkthrough is hard. Combining them in the battle with your Generics is a freaky powerful combination. But, anyway, that's sounds cool. Do it, because it might can be a good experience. Just suppose that they haven't abilities, so they can be fragile in some storyline battle...

Posted by: Raijin 26th November 2008 19:20
I would use monsters if there was room for them. It's kind of cool that in FFTA you can have a "morpher" job that can be any monster you've already caught. Kind of annoying too though that you have to level monsters by feeding them items.

In case you want to add me to your statistics sheet. Almost didn't reply.

Occasionally use Worker 8, Byblos, and Boco. Prefer humans who can use skills. The monsters end up getting hurt and have to retreat.

One can put me in the camp of largely breeding for poaching. I've never really tried a monster-heavy playthrough and I probably should, but dealing with the monsters' abilities and their nutty breeding rates just seems like too much work. As a couple people pointed out, the larger roster capacity in WotL might make it less a chore, so I'm keeping that in mind.
