Highwind Takes to the Skies is the airship theme for Final Fantasy VII, were that not clear by the name. It's a debut track in these competitions, so a little shocking to see it take such a high seed, even though it does a fine job of capturing the freedom and purpose given to the party by the airship. Both the vessel and its theme soar, in this case!
Another newcomer is Crono's character theme, Chrono Trigger. While Crono doesn't necessarily start out as Time's Hero, there's no questioning his spirit of adventure, and adventure is the primary theme I can hear in this track. Listen long enough to get to the emotional bridge. |

Crono's Theme just hits all the right notes to get you excited and that feeling you're doing the right thing. It's a joy to hear every time it plays through the game.

Eh, I think Uematsu could've done better for the Highwind than a variation of the (superior) overworld theme. Chrono Trigger isn't my fave track from CT, but it's still pretty solid.

"Highwind Takes to the Skies" is a nice track, albeit one I admittedly haven't heard in-game, but I like how it quotes the main theme of FF7 and like one or two other things from the soundtrack (I recognize a bit of "Shinra Army Wages a Full-Scale Attack" in it).
However, it's overshadowed in its grandeur by the main theme of Chrono Trigger. Not heard much in-game -- if I recall correctly, it's played just in the intro video and a couple key points in the game (after the Day of Lavos video is first revealed and in one of the approaches to Lavos), representing not so much the character Crono himself and more so the confidence of the cast. Its melody is quoted in the 1000 A.D. overworld theme (and thus the ending theme) and approximately quoted in "Corridors of Time". My only qualms with this main theme are that it doesn't loop, and also the late-game appearance only shows off the first part of the track, the part without that "emotional bridge", and that first part is relatively short, meaning that you can't really use it very effectively to set the atmosphere for an extended period of time. Still, though, my vote goes to Chrono Trigger's main theme. I'm voting in favour of Chrono's Theme as well. It just sets up the game so nicely if you let that opening play and TheEvilEye is right that it hits all the right notes.

It may appear to be a shallow reason but I tossed my vote in favor of Crono's theme because the only place in-game that plays the full version is the attract mode. The first part I feel "meh, whatever" about. So I feel like I'm tossing one for the underdog, though the votes say otherwise.
