The first intra-game matchup of the 2017 brackets, both of these tracks are new to the competition due to Chrono Trigger being excluded last time. Decisive Battle with Magus starts slowly with synthesized wind sounds and a foreboding theme before breaking into battle with a driving bassline.
Schala's Theme also opens with a series of simple chimes before laying in high-pitched wind notes and primitive percussion befitting Schala's historical origins. The result is a feeling of mystery, again much like the character for whom the track exists. |

Schala's theme is great, but there's no comparing to the decisive battle with Magus. The first fight with Magus is what really hooked me into the game. It was epic, the fight was difficult, and it felt awesome beating him for the first time at the end of a long dungeon.

I don't have the emotional attachment to CT that so many people here do, but I know enough to know that it's a brutal call for a lot of people. Definitely one of the trickier first-round matchups, I'd bet.

Toughest choice so far but...
Magus. We were led to believe that this guy was our big bad. The mage responsible for the plight of the dark ages. The scourge of Guardia. The lead-up to the fight with the blue flames, the decaying totemic husk, the howls throughout the music. Everything about that fight was perfectly executed. -------------------- And have you found your joy, in this near dead world of ours? |

Both solid tracks, and Greg 12 years ago would've been all over dat sweet, sweet Magus and picketing the virtues of it.
However, I've grown to appreciate pieces with more self-reflection like Schala's Theme emotes for me. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Greg |

I've never really liked Schala's theme, so this choice is easy for me.
I don't think Magus's theme is supremely good either (despite using his name as my screenname's middle name, haha) but it's certainly exciting and convincing. The percussion rhythms and the transition to A minor really make this track. (I'd probably pick Corridors of Time above both of them though.) It's been a while since I've played CT, but I definitely went with "Schala's Theme" because of the Chrono Jigga song which you can listen to here

I absolutely love Magus's theme. It frames that fight and its lead-up perfectly, and even on its own, it just does everything right.
As for Schala's theme, it's a fine piece in its own right, although I'm not fond of the percussion. I dunno, I feel like the percussion adds an unnecessary element of energy, and only serves as a somewhat jarring detraction from an otherwise really mellow track. -------------------- |
