Loss of Me from Final Fantasy IX comes in as a strong #3 seed, one of the two FF9 tracks to start so high but a step down from its #2 seed in 2010. Back then, it won two rounds before being blown out by Fight 2 from Final Fantasy IV. Also known as "Rose of May," this piano-heavy tune is closely tied to Beatrix' growth and is often referred to as her character theme, though it's not as explicitly defined as such within the scope of the game.
From the original Final Fantasy, Temple of Chaos plays as the party both enters its first dungeon and as it enters its last, creating an excellent set of bookends for the game. It's mysterious and a bit haunted, and a wonderful composition given the limitations of the time. It took out the final boss battle theme from Final Fantasy IV in 2010, not bad for a track from the first game in the series. |

GO FF1! Temple of Chaos is plucky, hits the ears pretty decent, and feels adventurous. It will lose this one I'm sure because Loss of Me is better, but doesn't feel very fun compared to Temple of Chaos.

This is a much closer match-up if you consider the PSX version of Temple of Chaos, and if I'm not mistaken, that's the version that was presented in the last competition. Regardless, I'm goin' with Rose of May in part cuz I'm familiar with how it was used in its respective game, and also cuz of my support for FF9's soundtrack overall.

Looks like all the FF1 uploads you're using have a weird left/right balance problem to them.
Here's an upload of the NES version without that problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXfrj7NeQfM Here's the PS1/PSP version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suyCi-xdjNo Here's the GBA version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bO4bQsk4Ys Anyway... I've only briefly heard the Chaos Temple theme in-game, so I don't have much attachment to it. (And it was even the NES version.) And I haven't played FFIX. Loss of Me is a pretty nice track, straightforward and strongly melodic. My main complaint with it is that the piano instrumentation is just...not very good, causing all the chords to sound too harsh. FWIW, here's a chiptune version of this track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQoEzA63d0I This particular version makes it sound nicer, by reducing the awkward harshness of the piano chords. Unfortunately there's no equivalently-unharsh version (by using alternate instruments) of the already-chiptune Chaos Temple theme, so I can't get a direct comparison. I'll have to mull over this choice for a bit. Edit: My vote goes to Temple of Chaos, which I think flows a little bit better. Lovely as Loss of Me is in its emotive way, Temple of Chaos has always just stuck out for me with its 80s-ish adventure vibe, made all the more 80s in the PS1 version, in my opinion.
