The first song from Final Fantasy 15 to make the bracket comes in as the #8 seed in bracket 4. Cape Caem is a breath of fresh air in the Final Fantasy XV plot and soundtrack, with a pretty melancholy that perfectly illustrates the feeling of impending change coming to Noctis and his friends, and serves as a good example for the way in which the game uses its music for ambience.
Cape Caem has a tough matchup in Theme of Love, though, certainly one the best-known pieces from the SNES era of Final Fantasy games. Befitting a game in which human relationships are a focus throughout, this theme gets a lot of play in some very emotional situations. All that being said, though, this track wasn't selected for the last competition, so there's no way to predict how it will do! |

Theme of Love is just too iconic. The scene where it plays was the first time on any system that sprites hugged. Really showed the depth of story Squaresoft (best Square) was trying to tell on the system.

Didn't play either game, so based on its own merit, Theme of Love does absolutely nothing for me. Cape Caem, on the other hand, is rather reminiscent of Chrono Cross (whose soundtrack I quite like). That's something, at least.

You're not the first person to make that comparison, as I've been stanning for Cape Caem in chat for months. I have to admit, that song grabbed me in game so much that it was part of the motivation for doing this whole thing again in the first place. Neal and I had talked about it off and on for a couple years, but the whole conceit of having FF music on the radio, combined with some of the great songs in XV, pushed me over the edge. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

While the Cape Caem piece is definitely more nuanced, and I adore Shimomura's work, I'ma have to stick with Theme of Love because of the emotions it evokes. It's so simple, yet just pierces your heart. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Greg |

Theme of Love feels dated to me. It appears this has much to do with my perception of Rosa and Cecil as one-dimensional characters. My tastes have changed since I first played FF4.

Shimomura did Cape Caem?
Anyway, Cape Caem reminds me a bit of the Trails in the Sky music that I've been listening to lately from playing the game. Even though there's no Trails location that is a tropical beach port town which this tune seems to be evoking (I haven't seen it in game). The Theme of Love I have seen in game, but it's not really my favorite of the FF4 character themes -- for starters I'd wish it'd do a full "A A' B" loop rather than just an "A' B" loop, which I think gives too much of the weightier, more grandiose B section per loop. That said, it's a nice tune. But as a general point, I just think it feels a little underdeveloped -- like, there could be more done with the theme and it loops too soon. I find the Cape Caem theme more musically interesting, and thus my vote goes to it. Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 10th November 2017 17:18) Shimomura did Cape Caem? Shimomura did the whole of the XV soundtrack, yeah. And you're not terribly far off about the style of the location - it's more pastoral and isolated than tropical and town, but that's the right ballpark. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I actually don't know much of Shimomura's works, even though I've been familiar with her name for many, many years. I really like her work on Super Mario RPG, and I know she did Kingdom Hearts but I haven't played that game.
A similar thing applies to Yasunori Mitsuda, whom I basically know only through Chrono Trigger. I might even say the same about Hiroki Kikuta except at least I've heard his stuff in Alphabet Planet, beyond his work on Secret of Mana. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros.
