Caves of Narshe Forums > News > Regalia Phase 2 Underway: Enter to Win Prizes!

Posted by: Rangers51 9th October 2017 19:52
Earlier today, I shut down the nomination phase. Sorry to those who were too lazy to get it done! It's possible you might not have gotten your favorite song in to the top sixty-four nominations by missing out, but it's okay, because now it's time for the second phase, and it's much faster to do this one and it's the part where you can win prizes.

https://regalia.cavesofnarshe.com/!

We'll leave this phase open until at least November 1, after which we'll get the voting started. Please remember to share to social media after you make your picks, because everyone everywhere can still play, whether they nominated or not!

I'll post the list of sixty-four as a subsequent comment to this news post for folks who want to see it before making their picks.

I see you survived the hurricane!

Does the order of these five predictions matter?

We didn't even get more than a half inch of rain at my house. It swung the other way.

Yes, in this case, the order is vital. Pick the top five in order.

Bloody hell, this is gonna be a crapshoot.

I agree. Do I go with my heart? Or my brain? (It's all very difficult)

I'm picking the top 5 with my brain, but voting with my heart. Let's not have a repeat of last time!

Here's a YouTube playlist I put together of the top 64 - they're mostly alphebetized but I got lazy.

Only one Ivalice track? One?? huh.gif How lame is that tongue.gif . Also, I'm unfamiliar with almost half of those tracks. I should really get to listening...

I tried. I think I nominated two or three FFT tracks.

I really like Hitoshi Sakimoto's music.

Thing is, it's also often a bit atmospheric. Rich, but atmospheric, and while it's very evocative, it doesn't as often have the simple-and-strong melody that, say, Uematsu is used used to using, even if his tracks are a little less smooth-sounding.

Case in point, I really enjoyed the anime series The Tower of Druaga, for which Sakimoto wrote the soundtrack, but I found it difficult to remember any particular track aside from one characteristically "curious" track representing the comedic interactions of the lazy-but-talented nobleman mage Melt and his surprisingly competent, strong, and level-headed servant Coopa.

I nominated the Archades theme from FFXII. Lots of excellent music in that game but as GMH mentioned it's hard to come up with memorable tracks compared to the rest of the series. Of course I was really surprised to see so many XV tracks nominated for the same reason...
For the record, the Phon Coast, Lowtown, Paramina Rift, and Salikawood themes are great listening as well.

I was so certain my FFT pick was popular enough and I even placed it in my top spot; it didn't make the cut. Boo, was proven wrong.

Picking winners to me is just a matter of determining what the voters will gravitate towards. I chose 4 out of 5 within 10 minutes. Had a dilemma between 3-4 choices for the 5th slot but metagamed a bit and one of them stood out more. Though there's just as much of a chance that I'm completely out of touch with what FF fandom likes and none of my picks make the top 5; will see when it's over. May end up participating very little (if at all) in the voting portion as the temptation to metagame the voting is strong.

Which FFT track did you nominate? I nominated Trisection (because it's rather popular amongst CoNners from my experience), Apoplexy (because it's just one of my downright faves), and Mission Complete (yes, that fanfare, which I really like to play after battles finish in D&D games). I wish I could nominate an entire slate of FFT (and FFTA) tracks.

Also I suddenly realized today that I'd ENTIRELY forgotten about "Dear Friends" from FFV. It should have gotten a nomination spot...It's really embarrassing that I forgot that because I like it so much...

Anyway, only eight of my nominations made it in -- specifically my #1, #2, #3, #5, #6, #8, #9, and #16.

I nommed Antipyretic. Had I not stopped at one track, would have considered In Pursuit, the credits theme, and that one that plays in a few cutscenes (one of them being when Orlandu joins up) that I don't recall the name of.

Four of my noms made it in which was surprisingly high since I tended to go for tracks I doubted anyone else would pick: CT, FF9, FF8, and FF4.

Antipyretic is great. In Pursuit is too. That said, I gave one nomination slot to Trisection because I was afraid that FFT wouldn't get represented. Considering that's the only track that got in...I was probably right to be worried.

One of my problems with picking things out of FFT is that I haven't actually played FFT...but I have listened to many of the tracks and I regard its soundtrack very highly.

My faves include both ones that are common faves as well as ones that are less typical, and I tried to include some of both. Of the tracks I nominated...
* the ones I assumed to be "less typical" were #1, #4, #5, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, #12, #14
* the ones that didn't make it in were #4, #7, #10, #11, #12, #13, #14

My nominees that didn't make it in were:
#4 [Chrono Trigger] Sealed Door (Belthasar's Theme) - a track expressing a profound sadness, a profound hopelessness that defies even efforts to change fate, and that stands out dramatically in a soundtrack about changing fate and bringing hope.
#7 [Final Fantasy Tactics] Apoplexy - a high-tension action track with a constatly-shifting tonality and a driving rhythm that gives it a great sense of momentum and intensity, which I hear is cut in half into two in-game versions. It presents not only a variety of tonalities but also a variety of textures, and would (since I haven't played the game yet) be perfect for an intense, decisive battle, with quickly- and dramatically-changing conditions.
#10 [Final Fantasy 7] Requiem (a.k.a. "Continue") - the game over track. I always felt it sounded like a gentle lullaby, and I really appreciated that, given the dark tone the game itself sometimes expressed. (I've literally went to sleep with it playing a few times.) Besides, it has the "crystal theme" (i.e. the "Prelude", as it's officially called), and I like this synth instrumentation a bit more than the SNES versions, but this is also the same notes as the basic NES version from 2 and 3. The actual "The Prelude" in FF7 is also nice, but never lets up on the additional voices if you let it loop (something I'd have liked it to have done), even though to its credit it also has some beautiful additional transition chords for the loop.
#11 [Final Fantasy Tactics] Mission Complete - the victory fanfare, I presume. I just...like it a lot. It's a great fanfare for celebrating after a long battle, but doesn't overstay its welcome.
#12 [Final Fantasy 6] Strago's Theme - a curious, characteristic, and slightly playful/mischievous theme for everyone's favorite "fuddy duddy". I've found myself humming it from time to time. It has distinctively-slightly-awkward motifs and smoother, more lyrical bits later on to establish a depth of characterization, in good balance. For this nomination, it was a choice between Strago's, Umaro's, and Gogo's themes (all of which are slightly similar in character and also in the same key), and possibly also the Slam Shuffle (the theme of Zozo), which also has a similar character.
#13 [Chrono Trigger] Tyran Castle - I'm really surprised this didn't make it in. This is a perennial favorite of mine and is distinctively and dramatically defined by its contrasting instrumentations -- an intro with ominous and slow strings and organ, then a rockin' main section, like the place lighting up with enemies and combat, and finally a transition with harp/celeste and strings repeating the ominous melody from the intro but in a more lyrical setting for a reflective moment before returning to the combat. The track is aggressively ominous. Best of all, the game actually doesn't interrupt this music for at least some battles, I think? (Is there a hack of Chrono Trigger that makes the game not interrupt the area music for any battles?)
#14 [Final Fantasy IX] Aloha de Chocobo -- A really pleasant, clear, and clean track, one might even say it sounds sacred in its sereneness. While I haven't played FFIX, I did experience it a different way -- I think I listened to it on loop after I spent an entire night playing through my first Castlevania game, Harmony of Dissonance, getting lots in its maze of castle passages and convoluted plot, and finally finishing it. As the morning arrived, this was playing, and it seemed to dispel the deep darkness of that night, replacing it with a warm and holy bathing of sunlight. That was a very memorable feeling. And that feeling of spiritual serenity that this track gives off makes this my favorite chocobo theme.

Had I remembered Dear Friends while I was doing my nominations, it probably would have competed with Aloha de Chocobo for its slot. It's not as similar to Aloha de Chocobo as Strago's, Umaro's, and Gogo's themes are similar to each other, since Dear Friends is more nostalgic and about the down-to-earth companionship of friends, but it's also got a slow, reflective pace, and relatively simple instrumentation (Aloha de Chocobo is solo guitar, while Dear Friends is solo guitar in its first loop and adds two flutes for subsequent loops).

This is going to be tricky. I know which songs I like, but I don't have much of a feel for what the fan favorites are. In the end, I couldn't help myself from picking a CT song to be high up on the list.

I've been traveling and otherwise occupied a fair bit recently, so we're not going to be quite ready to start the bracket right when I thought. Make sure you get your predictions in now, though, to have a shot at any prizes. I'll be looking to close down the predictions and move on probably after the weekend.

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 2nd November 2017 09:16
Okay, got my throwaway top 5 in by listing what I remember to be some popular tracks (albeit not necessarily my faves).

I don't expect to win anything, but...hey, I entered.

Posted by: Rangers51 6th November 2017 22:20
OK, I keep saying this, but we're coming up on the absolute last chance to enter to win prizes. I am working on the first round of matchups right now and might be opening them up as soon as tomorrow (or when my time allows!). I'll have a new post about how they work when they're running.
