why not add FFVIII and up, since you got the older ones.

http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/index.php?showtopic=8552 R51's http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/index.php?showtopic=6769 is still the current answer:

In terms of adding other games to the site, we'd be happy to. But most people who suggest such things don't quite understand what an undertaking it is to do a game section with the quality CoN members and visitors expect. We don't launch site sections until they are as good as the FF7 section. Any sections on the site now that are not quite as cool - well, we're working on improving them first. So if you have a collection of flawless data, art, screenshots, etc. to give us, we'll write code around it. But for now, don't expect new games of any sort - especially not FF8, which remains among the least favorite of the series for much of the staff.

Which to summarize is:
-CoN is attempting to update what CoN has to match the FF7 section.
-It takes a great deal of effort to launch a whole new section.
-Pretty much every staffer dislikes FF8.

Posted by: Silverlance 21st May 2006 07:55
CoN started out as providing FF6-only coverage.

You should be happy that the staff has gone through the effort to provide us with coverage for plenty of other games under the Final Fantasy label. wink.gif

Of course if you can provide them with the entire contents of the FF8 section in question yourself, all neatly formatted for use on-site and in the same style as the other sections, MAYBE you could try to negotiate something with them. Don't take my word for it though, last I checked the CoN staff was quite sane of mind and didn't care much for FF8. tongue.gif

Rangers51, you might want to put up a sticky topic about requests for adding new sections.

Is that really the shared opinion of most of the staff here? I found FF8 to be a pretty enjoyable game. I'd like to see it added to the knowledgebase here at the CoN, but if it's not then no biggy.

You might want to keep these kinds of opinions to yourself in the future. wink.gif

Adding new content takes a lot of work. Everyone who thinks the site should have any kind of new content should IM or email Josh RIGHT NOW and volunteer to help him finish some of the things that are in progress already. Not only would that help get things done, but it would give you an idea of what new sections might entail, and you can quit whining for them without having any concept of what they're asking for.

Funny, I was thinking about making a request that the staffers skip 8 and go directly to IX

Because I too share disdain for 8

Edit
I would volunteer if I was more computer savy, although I wouldn't mind finding images or information for CoN

Why want CoN to have more FF's.Im not saying it'd be horrible or the site is,im saying it's not the only site on the internet.

Posted by: Quad 12th June 2006 19:30
Also, more boards means more bandwidth, which R51 has to pay for. I think. Maybe I'm confused.

Posted by: Rangers51 12th June 2006 19:39
Why do we need multiple threads for this? Maybe I WILL sticky this.

Posted by: bebi vegeta 1st November 2006 08:00
Well, unfortunately, unless your working on the boards yourself, or are willing to send a full section to these people, it is not going to happen until they get done, you have got to remember, these people actually *gasp* have lives, they cant be adding everything suggested, they would be editing non-stop for months, and personally, its a lottttt harder than it seems.
Oh, and *thirds comment on disliking 8 with a vengance* but I actually didnt hate it as much as X-2 *shudders* (spammidy, lol)

I liked Final Fantasy VIII a Lot but it is not my Favorite so I do not mind.

ff8 is my favorite final fantasy.

Depends on the game. There are games that I'm simply not interested in writing code to display, and unfortunately I'm backlogged enough on that to the point that if someone provides data for a game that doesn't fit in with current plans, it will be for naught.

For all the people that accuse CoN of having an institutional bias against FF8, it's really not that at all. Most of the staff did find FF8 the least fun of the canon games, true, but it's really more that FF8 is a bit of an easy target for us to http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/index.php?showtopic=8440. That said, FF8 doesn't really fit in with our vision for the site, which has always been to cover the best of the "older" games to come to our shores.

Posted by: The_X 10th June 2007 02:20
Um........I'm still rather unclear on what kind of games you, the CoN staff, take in but I'm willing to lend a hand wherever I can. Not yet though since I am now going into the exam period of the year :\ but afterwards I'm all for helping you.

Posted by: Death Penalty 10th June 2007 14:10
ya if the staff wants to tell us what games u r interested in adding to the site, i would be glad to help. im in high school, its summer, i have plenty of free time. im no computer wiz, but im no idiot either.

FF1 Dawn of Souls and FF5a are what we would in theory need help with right now. I'm a bit pressed for time to answer at the moment, but searching this forum should show you exactly what we tend to look for, especially the "Help Wanted" threads.

I haven't updated it in a while because the vast majority of people who express interest don't follow through.

Like R51 said, it would go against the format of the site: the older games of FF. If you asked me, just covering 1-6 would've been fine with me if 7 wasn't so good.

You don't have to, it's from the playstation era of Final Fantasy. It doesn't go well with the nintendo era games. Or maybe the suckiness of 8 just eclipsed it and they don't want to go close to it.

I can't speak with the full authority of R51 or Tiddles, but I will say that right now CoN's major priorities are to make the information on the six games we currently cover as up-to-date as possible. We're open to covering new games, but before that happens we want to improve our coverage of the older ones. And while there aren't any plans to make an FF IX section in the near future, it's not like we're trying to avoid the "playstation era" or anything.

Posted by: BlitzSage 3rd April 2008 21:05
That's good. I'd like to see it on the site someday, but I can definitely wait for it. I was just referring to R51's post.

I have to just ask one question: At minimum, what would you want to open a section for a game?

The bare minimum would be everything that we have for Chrono Trigger. A full walkthrough, data for all the major categories like weapons, armor, enemies, etc., a good collection of miniguides, and all the images necessary to match. It would be all the better if we're the only site that has the bulk of the content.

I have kind of a suggestion for new content, not for new games necessarily. Maybe we could find someone on Youtube somewhere that does walkthroughs for the games we cover. Maybe you could imbed the vids on the specific chapters?

I know it'd be easy for VII, since I've seen someone do a walkthrough for the game. I don't know if this is a good suggestion, but, oh well.

Posted by: Rangers51 20th November 2010 03:20
We have discussed that, Blitzsage, and I don't think we'd be interested unless we produced the videos ourselves based on our own walkthroughs. There's plenty of good work out there, I'm sure, but why have video that doesn't match exactly the walkthroughs written out on the site?

Posted by: AlphaMart 11th December 2010 16:54
I can understand why it would be a lot of work re-working the site and adding new content such as walkthroughs etc, but would it be impossible to create a FFIX forum section?
There are loads of sites out there that give other sites permission to post their walkthroughs etc. Is this not a viable short-term solution to saving time, when it sounds like the majority of the people here just want to talk about the game?

Great work with the VII section btw!

Same answer as we gave previously (in another topic):

Quote (Tiddles)
I'll bring out my usual points on the subject of having more forums.

You can't just create forum sections in the hope that topics will fill them.

That's just not how it works. For anyone who's tried the "Let's make my own pointless message board" game - and got anywhere with it - this was lesson number one. Empty forums don't encourage traffic on that subject, apart from at most one pity topic, regardless of what their name or supposed subject of discussion is.

The other point:

There's a perfectly good forum for discussing other Square/SE games already.

If you want to talk FF9, you can do it in General Squenix. Making a big empty room (aside from the crickets) would not make more people talk about it than they do there.

With the level of traffic we have now, if we made any forum structure changes, it should be to consolidate the existing Final Fantasy/Square forums into one. Maybe the whole lot.

Hello there! Is anything currently being worked on in terms of new content to the site?

Ta

Posted by: Rangers51 13th January 2011 00:42
In terms of games that aren't on the site at all right now, not just yet. We're working on improving some of our older coverage right now, it's just going amazingly slowly. This means that you can probably expect sometime in the future for some games to have more versions covered, and covered better, than we have right now.

We're happy to accept help, for sure, including from you if you can keep your language in your posts in check. wink.gif

As far as DoS is concerned, we were considering (and would still love to consider) adding the FF1 release from that version to the site. The biggest roadblock is getting new walkthrough content for the massive dungeons that they added, including full equipment stats for all the new stuff added in that release.

Someday, should the site keep plugging along, adding FF2 from DoS (and Origins, and PSP, etc.) would be lovely, to fill one of our longest-standing gaps in coverage. However, it's hard to get traction on such a project because there's only about eight people on the internet who have played and liked the game enough to put the time in.

I'm generally a foul mouthed person at the best of times IRL, I'll try to keep an eye on that while I'm here.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and since CoN is my one-stop-shop for anything I need to know Final Fantasy-wise I was hoping I could persuade the admin here let me write a FFVIII, FFX and FFXIII section, as well as help with FFIX and FFXII.

I know FFVIII inside out, after playing it about 5-6 times, and know all the little tricks with cards and stat-maxing etc. I've already written a detailed walkthrough(with and w/o spoilers) and written 4 guides on Chocobo Forests, defeating X-ATM092, Triple Triad and getting everyone's weapons with enemy data. I just need to rip images of the cards from the PC version and I should be done with the Triple Triad one. I still need images of every enemy other than Omega Weapon(since I made a TT card of him myself tongue.gif )

FFX I've only played through twice, but I am a self-proclaimed master of Blitzball, and considering I've also had a Blitzball maximum of 23 goals in one game, I'm pretty sure my proclamation is valid. cool.gif I've written about 2/3 of a full walkthrough with and w/o spoilers and I also wrote a guide on Sphere Grid maxing, which takes a good 20+ hours to do in itself.

I've 100% finished FFXIII by getting all achievements and the story only took 20 hours to finish and about three days to write a guide for. I've got a PDF of the Piggyback strategy guide which I can get maps and enemy pictures from. I have a friend who can probably rip the 3D models of the weapons too.

I didn't really like FFXII, but I suppose I can do some tidbits for it. If you add a Revenant Wings section then you can add my walkthrough and esper guide for that.

Final Fantasy IX I've only played once, maybe twice, but didn't take much in. I'm good at Tetra Master and generally know a couple of good gil/exp tricks but that's about it.

Y'know, I kind of wonder if these long-standing jokes and opinions espoused by the staff have artificially limited the lifespan of the site. That's kind of how it started, was a joke about how much we hated FF VIII - it's not even that bad and if I had the time to replay a Final Fantasy game, this or FF IX would probably be it.

That said, we don't even have enough support to push through the games we're already trying to add. Most of that is on me, since the most complicated parts fall to me alone, but that certainly doesn't make it any easier to get stuff done for anyone else, either.

I really do still have lots of plans for improving the site, but they all start with improving the things we already do well, because I refuse to have this site be built upon a dozen half-done games. I won't close the door on anything, though, if I can even get past what's in front of me.

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 19th July 2011 04:30
My apologies for taking a joke too seriously.

Now if only I could set aside enough time and drum up enough interest for me to get back into playing classic FF games that I've already played...

During this summer, I have been playing FF2 (the ps version) and to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not saying that it would be easy to add a section on it to CoN, but it would be easier than FF8, since it is shorter and lacking many sidequests. I would totally support a decision to add the game to the website.

What I'm trying to say is, there are now nine people who like the game. I'm not technically minded but I am willing to find information regarding the game. smile.gif
