I have no idea what, if any, real good heightened alpha brainwave activity does for you, but there it is.

I close my mouth now and I scream,
Open the door, there's nothing worth redeeming
I saw your face before in rough,
You should wait around a while, your body's bound to turn up.
So low for how high?

It's actually pretty interesting. I know that feeling actually, like when I play Unreal Tournament, at first I'm slow, sluggish and my shots are all off, after given time, I just click, and everything because instinctive. From this I have better control over everything in the game.

In terms of what good it does, it improves your gaming abilities, if your using it towards gaming. If it's used towards physical activity, then your playing your sport better.

I think that overall, it would improve quick thinking capabilities, probably not to earth-shattering levels, but better than what your currently capable of. On the other hand, it kinda makes you machine like, an event occurs and you instantly react, no time to really think it through with actual human logic. There's a motto for Unreal's deathmatch games which describes it :

"Once your in your zone, you become the hunter, and everyone is your pray. You'll pull the trigger without thinking, and you know it's a one shot kill. If it moves, you shoot it, and if it looks slightly human, shoot it and see what happens."

Basicly describes this zone reffered to be the article. It's a pretty neat study.

I read that the other day (or was it yesterday? Who knows?), got the link from Diabloii.net, and I realized that's basically true. Whenever I play games, it really depends on the type that will get me into a non-think mode. If I play an RTS, such as Starcraft, I gotta think the whole time, or I die. If I play a game like Goldeneye, I think in the beginning about what I'm gonna do, but when I concentrate on the game, everything just happens automatically. It's pretty nuts, I'd say.

The heightened alpha-wave brain activity that occurs in "the zone" is what's called an 'altered state of consciousness.' Meaning, things that occur outside your focus are perceived, but are not remembered after about a tenth of a second. While in that state, your reaction time is much improved, and you become one with your focus. The benefits are quite practical; you simply forget what's going on with your life for the time being, helping you relax. A godsend for the procrastinators among us.
