I’m actually most interested in seeing if there are any minigames you like enough that you’d be tempted to play an expanded spin-off of them. (So, Lord of Vermilion in FFXIV doesn’t count since it existed before FFXIV, I think, but most others would.)

Mostly, I suspect people don’t care for the minigames—since they’re not the focus of the game, and it often shows—but I’m willing to be surprised.

Like, I know lots of people like Triple Triad, but can you see yourself playing it as its own game? Or is it just a fun romp (and path to power) in FFVIII?

I’d be tempted to play a fully fleshed-out Chocobo Racing game, I think. Something that borrows racing elements from kart racers but also leans into the distinct differences between karts and chocobos.

Triple Triad was a pretty successful unofficial standalone game for a long time, so I guess that one counts. I never played it online, so I can't really say. I think they ended up officially adding it to XIV, didn't they?

When doing Rebirth, I desperately wanted to program a standalone version of Queen's Blood, which is easily the best card game put into FF for my money. Of course, someone already beat me to that as well, which is no surprise because I'm actually quite lazy. I haven't played that yet either but I'd definitely play a standalone version of it, generally speaking.

Yup, Triple Triad is in FFXIV. They also have Mahjongg (the actual game against opponents, not the "solitaire" version.) Rumor for a while was that we'd be getting Blitzball as well but we ended up getting a Fall Guys collaboration instead.

This is an interesting question. Rebirth didn't sit well with me because of the number of mini-games. I got quite tired of them by the end, and some of them were necessary to advance the story which just, UGH. I don't know if I myself would want to play any Final Fantasy mini-game as a standalone, though I could see arguments for Triple Triad and Queen's Blood, and yes, maybe Blitzball too.

I could totally see Triple Triad as its own game. It's simple but addicting, and it's got that perfect mix of strategy and luck. Queen's Blood could also work really well as a standalone—it's way more intense and fun than a lot of other card games. But honestly, most of the FF minigames are just better as side stuff, you know? Blitzball's the one that could really stand on its own if they gave it the right treatment.

Love Triple Triad, but minigames as a whole within FF are hit & miss with me.....usually miss. I guess you could say I got used to Chocobo Hot & Cold in FFIX, if that counts? Not sure I'd want it expanded, though!

I never cared much for Blitzball, but I did enjoy the management sim elements of the little island you get in FF XI. I played FF XIV and XIV:ARR for about 2 years, but have since come to despise Yoshi P & his projects. Man was I ever angry when he added Triple Triad to FFXIV, haha. It belongs to VIII fans!

Queen's Blood was okay, I completed the side quest so I guess I got pretty into it! I agree that Rebirth went too hard on the minigames. The game as a whole was exhausting by the end due to the sheer amount of open-world....stuff. I'll need to go reread some older threads here but I wonder if I'm along in preferring Remake to Rebirth?

Back to minigames, I loved Mog's House in FFVII, it feels so cozy each time I revisit the game! I like the submarine minigame too. Big fan of the Gold Saucer.

I'd never even heard of Queen's Blood, but it sounds like it's popular and at least reasonably well designed. I'll have to take a look at it.

Chocobo Hot & Cold feels less like a minigame than it does a chore (even with the increased speed option on the Switch).

If they made a Blitzball game, it'd have to operate in actual 3D space; I don't know if that'd actually feel all that different, but it'd be cool to see it done, IMHO.

Edit: Mog's House could probably crowd into the Animal Crossing/Stardew Valley arena of cozy gaming, but that'd be a pretty massive undertaking.
