So I was wandering about the wild, open fields of the internet when I came upon this site: http://www.brickset.com/

It has all the different lego sets for each of the different themes, listed by year or by theme with pictures and original prices for everything, as well as links to copies on Amazon and ebay. As someone who was a massive legos fan, I have spent tons of time in the last few days looking over this whole site, checking out all my favorite sets and all the sets I always wanted.

So, what are you favorite themes/series? What're your favorite sets? And which ones did you always want but never ended up with? Personally, I'm almost considering buying one or two just to fulfill my childhood.

Castle, from 1990-95 or so. I have some pretty awesome ones. I used to set up a big kingdom world spanning my play room!

I loved Lego, and still love Lego to this day.

My family didn't have a ton of money when I was in prime Lego age - we were comfortable, but mainly because we didn't go all out on things like Lego - so collecting specific themes or sets over time just wasn't in the cards. A lot of my bricks, therefore, were collected second-hand, or from a variety of themes. Of course, for birthdays and Christmases and such, I think it was easier for my family to pick out Transformers and Micro Machines anyway, and that was fine with me. smile.gif

I was always most enamored of the Space sets from '85-'90 or so. However, looking at Brickset, I can't find any sets that I specifically remember having, though I think http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6971-1 , and http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6702-1 . Nothing fancy, just something to do quickly and set on a shelf. Took a long break due to having even less money (and time) than I did as a kid, but I always went into the Lego stores in New York, New Jersey, and Boston whenever I was in the neighborhood during the times I lived there.

Last fall, my wife surprised me by picking up a Clone Wars set ( http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8086-1

(Feel free to buy them for me, especially Fallingwater and the Guggenheim, because I'm a Wright junkie.)

Lego was always my favorite. I'm sure in the attic back at my mom's house she's saved every set that I used to have in some large bin, and all this thread and that site are doing is making me want to go home and build all of them over again.

Last year for my birthday, my roommates got me Darth Vader's TIE, which was an incredible gift: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10175-1 This was an awesome space flier that was one I constantly destroyed and rebuilt.
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6939-1 Is this racist?
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6082-1 Probably the last set I got on my main lego kick. It had a trap door that led into the dragon pit, which was pretty sweet.

Now I want all of the Lego.

Posted by: Rangers51 4th February 2011 15:31
Neal also had this one, which he shared in chat and reminded me that I, in fact, had it too!

http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6955-1

I also remembered a story - I had an auto racing minifig that I got second hand, and one time when I was seven, maybe eight, I also had a nice helium balloon. I, of course, decided that it would be fun to tie the minifig to the balloon and then rescue him as he was taken away by the winds, with the aid of my BB gun.

Of course, there weren't really air-propelled guns at this time, almost 25 years ago, that didn't require extensive pumping after each shot. So, when my first shot failed to bring down the balloon, I was forced to madly pump the gun in the hopes of having another go before it was out of sight and/or range. I failed miserably.

That balloon probably didn't make it more than a mile away. That minifig is probably somewhere right now, plowed into some farmer's cornfield. In memoriam: random Lego minifig. I hope that racing helmet served you well on your final journey.

Fort Legoredo was one that sticks out a lot from my childhood. My parents got it for my 8th birthday back in '97 for 20 bucks (it was missing all of 3 pieces which I had) and I have fond memories of it.

Posted by: Death Penalty 4th February 2011 18:04
I was also very into space sets, but not quite the same era as Josh's. Two of my most-cherished legos were from the Exploriens series:
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6856-1
Boy did I get my money out of those. I was a bit older once the UFO series started up, and with various birthdays and Christmases I accumulated almost the entire line (except the biggest one, of course). My favorite was definitely this one:
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6915-1
Two of the favorites that I actually owned (a good guy and a bad guy, of course, but they often ended up on the same team exploring the wild unknown of my house):
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6180-1

One of my most-wanted sets ever was from the Ice Planet 2002 series, but I they were out of stores by the time I saw it in one of those little lego catologues:
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6973-1
I thought the idea of an ice planet was so cool.

Yeah, same.... this might be bad. It's a good thing my card limits me to three purchases a month heh.

Lego's good fun, man.

I spent a good deal of time making up long-winded scenarios out of squares and rectangles. I probably wasn't the most creative or prolific of Lego children, but I sure did have a great time. I seem to particularly remember a lot of Star Fox-inspired work.

As far as themes go, I think I had more of a set graveyard than a display or collection. Every set seemed to eventually be stripped away and re-imagined into a (often ill-fitting) piece of whatever scenario was the soup du jour. I can say that there was a heavy population of spacemen, although their set origins are unknown to me.

What I clearly remember is this one from the Ninja sets that I was fond of around the time that I was asking for Legos as presents:
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6088-1
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6899-1

Holy crap, Death Penalty, I had ALL THREE of these sets too! Your post bumped them into my memory biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tonepoet 5th February 2011 15:04
The last special set I remember having of Legos myself was a Star Wars sets. I'm sure I had others before but Legos have the nasty tendency of getting lost, especially if you're moving. I liked the sandy desert base piece they used and several of the antennas...

I never rarely ever followed the patterns though because stupidly enough, I could never figure out how. The diagrams looked like nonsense to me. As such it was typically For the mostpart I used to make little starships of my own design using all sorts of cool pieces and bits from the plain ordinary sets as weaponry and really wanted to keep them forever but they broke apart irrepairably two moves later. It's a real shame too because some of them were comprised of special edition Purple blocks which just looked so cool. Legos really need to come in more colors, (that you can easily buy in bulk at that, although I could at least manage to use the same colors symmetrically, the coloring wasn't too consistent.)

An interesting thing about it is that you can use the little flat pieces to change the orientation of where you're building by 90 degrees by sticking shoving them between the pegs. This is especially useful for making it possible to have little protruding bits as main guns or maybe flag poles going out horizontally and all that jazz. You could similarly even center cylindrical pieces by sticking them between the four pegs and even build upon it without making things off center by directly plugging the top into the large hole on the bottom. Axles could be used similarly but I'd only recommend using them if you wanted the option for a moving part.

Legos are a blast. In its most basic form it's also very similar to pixel art creation, except in 3D...

the one that sticks out to me the most was the egypt set. but i never kept what i built from sets, i always broke them down and built my own thing. i currently have an airship, 2 four-legged robots, and a stand on wheels that i use for my webcam. i still love messing around with legos to this day

That is a brilliant idea. I might need to do just that.

I found myself looking at Lego when I was out shopping today, mainly due to this thread. There's a TIE Defender now, apparently, and I wants it, precious.

Oh, I forgot about those! It was like a bit of an Indiana Jones treasure-hunting adventure thing going on, and it was awesome. I had several of the Egypt ones, and a couple of the Amazon ones that followed. I think after that they went to a Dino Island or something, and maybe somewhere after that too, though by that time I wasn't much into it.

A bit more recent series (and by that I mean the year 2000), but one that I thought was really cool, was Rock Raiders. I had a few of those, and I thought that was a really well thought out series.

My favorite sets were definitely the underwater ones, though. But only the super-cool futuristic underwater ones, that looked like they could probably also be in outer space  biggrin.gif
Here's one from the Aquasharks that I lusted over:

I thought the idea of an ice planet was so cool.

My friend had a lot of the Underwater ones and I loved them!

I loved how they had those articulated grabby claws on their subs, the way things would interlock into docking bays and such. It was so awesome!

And Ice Planet was rad too! Also for all the same reasons. I also really liked the colour scheme of it.

I always wanted some of the Pirate stuff. The ships were amazingly well designed and I really liked how they had full sails and everything.

However, I only got my castle sets on birthdays or Christmas and that was it, and they were expensive enough so... yeah.
But I found some of them!
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6048-1
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6078-1 This was easily my favourite, I recall.

I *think* I have this one... but can't remember...
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6082-1

Most recently, I've collected a few Star Wars sets, from Clone Wars, and I did get an awesome TIE Fighter that I love. It's huge, awesome, and I want a Millennium Falcon haha. A Star Destroyer would be epic too.

Someday I want to get my Castle set all done up again, and I'd like to go back and find some more.

I see all the Wright lego sets every time I go to my bookstore. It's like they're taunting me, making me think.. "It's still a lego set, how much could it be?........IT'S HOW MUCH!?"

Also, my proudest (and nerdiest) Lego accomplishment is this.

Fire-Breathing Fortress

Also. WANT.

Fire-Breathing Fortress is a cool one, but wow, that village is sweet! I feel like that's a great theme for LEGO; making some more Medieval stuff besides the castles and various guard towers would be cool. How about a windmill, or a port?

Wow, I used to love Lego! I was especially fond of the space sets, as well as the Lego City.

But I had a very individual approach to playing with Lego. I'd buy a set, build it as per the instructions, then take it apart and use the bricks to build my own things. Spaceships were a particular love of mine - I used to build my own and the bigger the better, but I never seemed to have enough bricks! huh.gif

http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6973-1
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6923-1

Plus a bunch of other ones- a whole lot more than what we had of the M-Trons, but since their windows were the same color, we could augment the M-Tron stuff with the Blacktron stuff.

Going back even further in time, I did have two Futuron sets and I thought they were the coolest 'cause my favorite color was blue, plus because they were so old:
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6884-1

Another reason I loved the M-Tron series was the color scheme fit well with my Ramagon set (Ramagons had lego panels so you could make your own space stations and vehicles and stuff with them. They were a building tool developed by NASA that were one of those things that are awesome but never get very far in the market):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/46789389@N03/4292582913/
It was a really creatively made castle, with a trap door, a hidden ghost compartment, a back door, etc. Lots of stuff packed into that castle.
My best friend had some from the dragon knight series too.

We also had a few random space police parts.

I thought the idea of an ice planet was so cool.

I remember my best friend had that one. The Ice Planet series was brand new when we got them, and between us we had the entire Ice Planet collection, with some of the smaller sets purchased twice for the parts. I remember it actually snowed that year, and we got to play in the actual ice and snow which was awesome. The rest of the year, we liked to play at his house because it had a near-white carpet. I liked the fact that they brought back the magnets for Ice Planet 'cause I missed that with the M-Tron series.

I almost bought this set the other day, but Paypal refused to allow me to do it. Unfortunately, I don't expect one will show up on Amazon; otherwise I would totally buy it.

I definitely think the M-Tron and Blacktron series are cool, though they came a bit before my time.

So, I figured I'd post this here for those Lego interested, I just started a project this weekend to sort the pieces and build all the Lego sets that I own in an effort to get a dedicated set up going. I have massive plans for this and am very excited about it. I can't wait until my own sets are built then I can use the rest of my random pieces (I bought a lot of 28 pounds of legos off of ebay like 10 years ago) and see what I can build. I am super excited about this venture and hope that as I post my progress and things here people will find it interesting. I already have some video game ideas for the project. I plan on recreating characters from Earthbound, including The Runaway Five and their vehicle. Anyway, I just thought I'd post here and I'll keep updating on the progress either either a blurb or a link to a blurb on my blog that will devoted to the project and the various things I do with it.

That sounds like a fun project. I don't think I'd ever be able to manage that from my old sets, even if they weren't 1200 miles away.

I personally don't have the time or patience for such projects but I'm always amazed when people who have the talent and creativity for such things show them off! What I think are awesomely cool as well are entire videos made out of a Lego production. My favorite version of Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" has to be the Lego version XD

Posted by: Chewbekah 12th March 2013 22:16
I've thought about dabbling in the world of Lego stop animation and there's a lot of info about it but I'm not sure I have the patience to do it. It is time consuming since you're doing several shots to make one movement or change. In regards to taking the time to build and sort, it does take patience but I actually really enjoy it. There's something theraputic about doing stuff with your hands and being focuses on something like that. I mean I can mutlitask while I sort and build. I was talking to my brother on the phone while I was sorting (he was on speaker I'm not savy enough or nerdy enough to invest in blue tooth head devices).

Posted by: finalalias 13th March 2013 01:23
Yeah, I have a lot of respect for people who do any sort of frame by frame animation. Pretty painstaking stuff.

So, if you're interested in keeping up, I have a Lego website / blog that I will be updating. You can follow via Google + or just submit your email for update notifications.

Oh wow! I just saw this thread and it just so happens that two days ago we went into town (we live in Leipzig, Germany) and saw a bunch of Lego displays at the mall including a huge model of the US Capitol building (strange to see that here since I'm originally from the DC area). We went by the Lego store there and my wife made a comment about the cost of some of the bigger sets and I told her how when I was a kid I remember saving my birthday money to buy one of those more expensive sets. Lo and behold, here it is! http://brickset.com/sets/6982-1/Explorien-Starship Oh the nostalgia!

Posted by: Death Penalty 1st August 2014 05:10
Man, thanks for bumping this ElPanachino, or I would have never seen Josh's last post.

Not that what you said wasn't important tongue.gif I was still a bit on the younger side when Exploriens was about, so I only got some of the medium-sized sets in the series, but you can bet that's one of the ones I lusted after. And look how much more expensive it is now! cry.gif

I complain a lot that Legos have lost their creativity in the last decade. I think this isn't just grouchy nostalgizing: most of their sets now are imported from cinema, so it doesn't even really come down to a question of whether their original series are any good (but also, they aren't). This Odyssey thing, though, is a super neat idea -- the kind of thing I think Lego SHOULD be doing. It's a story many, many people know. The wide variety of islands and encounters in the story make not only for a fair bit of variance amongst the sets (compare Hades with Helios) but also would allow for different sized sets: some small (like the Sirens' island, or Scylla and Charybdis) and some large (like Ithaca or, if you wanted to include it, Troy). Somewhere in the middle you could put Odysseus' ship -- large enough to make it neat but small enough to still be accessible price-wise.

.....I maybe got a bit carried away there.

Yeah, I think that's a neat idea. Plus, since half the fun is in building something, this gives one an additional option, other than just mixing up all your sets in one big free-for-all. It still leaves a bit to be desired is comparison to the aesthetic/functional continuity of a series, though!

Well, okay, two comments: one, yes please. Two, needs more TIE Defender.

I got one of the new Bionicles--Gali--because they're sick. Expensive, though. But hey, they brought back one of their best toy lines. I'm happy.

Speaking of misusing Super Star Destroyer kits (but this time in an awesome way), the computer mod magazine that I get featured a pretty crazy scratch build this month. A guy took the 10,000-piece SSD kit (http://narshe.me/1Huo8NU) and turned it into this: http://imgur.com/a/MZyXS#dSMLnDC

That is pretty wild.

I thought it would be fun to get some legos the other day, thinking they'd be cheap, and I saw a set that cost $50! That should be illegal!

They have gotten pretty expensive by and large. Even the Duplo sets that I get my daughter are a bit over the top nowadays. I haven't bought any for myself in a very long time, because most of the ones that really interest me are in the $75 and up range, for instance, this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IXYSGO/

I got this little guy today: http://www.lego.com/en-us/starwars/product...ers/75075-at-at

These are kinda cute because they're weirdly-scaled, with normal size minifigs but shrunken vehicle sizes. And for ten bucks, this was a fun 20-minute diversion to put together while getting pieces I needed handed to me by a preschool assistant. And she got a Lego Star Wars Episode V poster as part of the deal.

Lego are getting stupid expensive, but I still kinda want that Poe Dameron X-Wing.

Good grief, these are expensive indeed. Beautiful models, don't get me wrong, but oofta! I have to imagine that the licencing for these buggers is very high, and that's getting passed along. I seem to remember even the first batch of Star Wars legos all being a step up on the price scale. But even so, $20 for the speeder?! We're talking, like, 50 pieces there! The Falcon probably is the best deal, for what you're getting.

If you go through the comments on that post long enough, you'll see some analysis of cost-per-piece in there. Noooooooot exactly how I think of Lego, but relevant to your comment. smile.gif

I've got a good job. A really nice family. A comfortable warm house, and I guess enough going for me in general. But my life seems to be missing this:

In looking at EE's link, my reactions:

Pic 1: Wow, that's a really good PlanEx headquarters, and look at the ship half sunk in the water. Very funny.
Pic 2: Really accurate Robot Arms Apartments, and hilarious that they put Santa on there. And Luke's landspeeder...
Pic 3 - End: Good Lord, this is amazing and I want it in my house.

Well, since I'm most of anyone who actually looks at this thread, this is now available for order: http://shop.lego.com/en-US/The-Disney-Castle-71040

It's nearly 30" high at the spire and has just over 4000 pieces. And it's $350. And I still kinda want it.

Posted by: TrueBOSS 2nd September 2016 19:07
Wow that's crazy. I used to collect Star Wars Lego sets but man where those pricey. But none of those held a candle to $350!

Posted by: Rangers51 15th August 2017 16:30
Speaking of pricey, Lego announced a teaser today for a new Star Wars set that will be its biggest ever, meaning, bigger than the Death Star.

https://www.facebook.com/LEGO/videos/10154980237728403/

Internet sleuthing implies that it's going to be a new Millenium Falcon, probably based on however it ends up looking for Episode VIII. The Death Star is just over four thousand pieces and costs $500, and is 16" in diameter. Hard telling how massive this new Falcon might be.

I collect a lot of Lego but I pretty much won't pay over $300 for something. Even paying $280 for Assembly Square was pushing it for me. I want that new giant Ninjago set, even though I don't collect the Ninjago line but $299.99 is a lot. i hear it's a fun build according to one of my LUG members. I did just pick up this though and it's supposed to arrive this week.

Here's a couple neat LEGO things I've seen on Facebook recently:

DJ and producer Zedd had a chunk of his wall torn out and replaced with LEGO, but inside the new wall there are partially-hidden compartments with recreations of venues he's played, an Overwatch scene, and some other stuff. Pretty neat. https://www.facebook.com/Zedd/videos/vb.107281645968137/277168592950225/?type=2&theater

My daughter got a pretty sizable LEGO Friends set as a belated birthday present this year, and it immediately became her favorite set that she's ever gotten. I have to admit I had a really good time putting it together with her; she really liked the tween/teen pool party theme, but I found myself impressed several times with the design decisions they made in creating the set and the cleverness made it really appealing. I was never a huge fan of the Friends line but after this one I'm definitely planning on getting her another one for Christmas.

Yesterday was my first chance to ever go to a LEGO convention, and I took my daughter and brother-in-law. I thought I'd throw a few of my photos from my phone up for people to check out:

What I find scarier is that your daughter, whom I remember being just a little child, becoming interested in The Office.
