The idea for this has been kicking around my head for a few months now, and has had a few attempts made at drawing it - this is really the only one that's somewhat presentable though. I'm fairly happy with it, even if the hand took forever and a day and to get right...*kicks it*

Another great job, Aora. I like your work with the mouse, keep it up.

(I like the color scheme on this particular drawing.) smile.gif

Again, praise and offer of mouse.

However, in hopes of actual discussion, I want to point out that something doesn't sit right with me in this drawing. The face, I believe it's either the eyes are too high up, the mouth too low / large, or the hair appearing too quickly (thus making it appear her eyes are far higher on the head... because the head itself is smaller).

Still, the coloring is magnificent and I can't, try as I might, say anything critical. Nice work.

Alas, the horrors of not using a reference. wink.gif You're not the first person to mention that it "doesn't look..quite..right" Elessar, but you have given the most detailed crit I've gotten so far on what exactly isn't working, so I'll see what I can do in regards to fixing it. Thanks! smile.gif

Another critique by yours truely

This is a definate departure from your previous works I've seen. I'm one for bold experiments and not just doing the same old same old. It gives her more of a psychological portrait of her character than anything else. It almost strikes me as an inversely coloured piece. Excellent touch with her breath escaping her mouth. Good job on taking it up a knotch further with a different way of showcasing Celes thumbup.gif

I'm not going to beat around the bush about this, but I think you're an experienced enough fanart to not use the excuse of 'oh, I didn't have reference'. Now while some might think of these comments as unduely harsh, I think you have to really push yourself to get better (since you're already at an awesome level as it is already). If you're having real trouble rendering the face without some image to go by, look into getting some books on anatomy/physiology to see the proportions and such of the face. When you you have these things down, you won't need to rely on images in a particular pose to get the results you want. I've been guilty of being lazy and not really giving my work much thought, so it was also brought out that parts x,y,z were off, and out of proportion on more than a few occasions.

Of course the way to get around such things is to say that you did them purposefully. You wanted the oddness of the facial structure to emphasize (insert whatever here). You wanted it to show the inner (insert whatever here) of Celes. But when you're doing that, you have to really mean it though happy.gif . Sometimes I'll just state flat out what I thought was a flaw with the piece to show that I do recognize it, and it was not an oversight on my part.

Now my little lecture is over, the piece (barring that little flub with her face) is excellent. I love it!!! wub.gif If you had this on deviantART I'd so +fav it.

I didn't mean to use it as an excuse..but..well, I suppose it did come out like that. *hits head*

I guess I'm still not quite as comfortable with this style after spending so long drawing anime, I really only ventured forth into the scary world of realism early this year. So I admit it, I'm a realism newbie. wink.gif Your suggestion about anatomy books was a good one, I've got a fair few bad recurring habits(low hairlines, small foreheads and such which my art teacher keeps pulling me up on..) which need to be stamped out.

(I sound like I'm making more excuses. I'm not, honest. Really. wink.gif)

Heh heh heh..biggrin.gif *notes* I think I might be too honest to pull a fast one like that though..

I think I just need more practice drawing faces though. Over and over. Get the proportions into your head while practice sketching, no need for a reference when you decide to make a full piece, yes? smile.gif Thanks Kame, good advice.
