Hello! *waves* My first submission here, although it's well outside my normal style. Cel-shading is addictive though....

Well done. Your coloring style reminds me of Titanium Moose, and that's a good thing. The figure itself seems a bit elongated, but that's more likely a facet of your individual style than any real error.
Of course, I'm impressed ten times over by the fact that you drew it with a mouse. That takes a sort of dedication that I can't even begin to fathom. Overall, good work. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. The picture looks really cool, but it doesn't really put me in mind of Celes for some reason.
Actually, she really looks like the little girl in the first Care Bears movie. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

A bit elongated, but graceful. I really like the hair.
My only beef with it is the head in proportion witht eh rest of the body seems odd. Each of them looks good, they just look...separate. ^^; Hard to explain so I'll quit rambling. XD Nice work! |

Thanks for the many warm welcomes, everyone.
Elongated and a bit disporportionate is right though, and I feel obliged to admit that it's not really a style thing....really more of an "I'm too lazy to fix the sketch" thing. The whole mouse-drawing thing pretty much stems from spending about a year without a scanner and really wanting to get some art online. Now I finally have a scanner, and it's gathering dust.... And..well. I didn't really like that drawing of Locke. I thought he looked a bit chubby, and that his hair was too shiny and perfectly combed. Locke doesn't seem the type to have perfectly combed hair, after all. Still, I may submit anyway. -------------------- Rules For Cooking Toast Be accurate when cooking toast Never try to guess Cook it til it smokes and then Twenty seconds less. |

Again, I don't really feel like going into an indepth critique, so I'll just throw out a few points.
*Normally, I'd offer a few points about anatomy, but I think the stylized limbs (very long!) give it this graceful (almost rubbery) stride. I have a feeling this was quite intentional, although, some people would say it was an error. *I LOVE her face (especially the expression). She has this look about her whole figure that's bordering on near androgyny. You really capture the character. I think you get the fact that she's not this dressed up pretty girl (with boobs like Tifa). *You give good detail on the clothing without over doing it. I can see you've looked at the Amano art. Very good job and I think you captured Celes well. -------------------- kame, tortue, tortuga, schildkröte, tartaruga, turtle "Arthur Dent?" "Yes." "Arthur Philip Dent?" "Yes." Again, thanks for the constructive crits.
I'm not entirely convinced it was all that intentional on my part...but like KingofFigaro suggested earlier..from now on, it's not disproportionate, merely heavily stylized. And..and..good gods. I hate Tifa. -------------------- Rules For Cooking Toast Be accurate when cooking toast Never try to guess Cook it til it smokes and then Twenty seconds less. |

I think her neck might be a lil too long. But other than that it's great.

Very professional looking.
It isn't that often that I am truely impressed by computer drawn/colored art (all done with the mouse you say?), but I most certainly am here (though I don't quite understand the stitching and exposed portion on the thigh, eh). It reminds me of a cross between something that I saw a very long time ago and can't remember, and something Narratorway might draw... I don't mean to be so vague, but now it's going to drive me crazy all day because I can't remember what it reminds me of. Anyway. The only critique which I might offer here is about the hair. Though it is some of the best hair I have seen recently (looking something like real hair and not four or five shiney spikes), the lack of heavy borderlines casts it in an odd contrast with the surrounding picture. The effect is that it looks separate from the rest of the picture, floating maybe, disjointed. This is often the result of applying styles (filters, effects, whatever) to a single layer in photoshop (for instance, if you had a layer which just contained the hair, and you applied a yellowish color overlay to the entire layer). I don't know if that is what you did, I just know that similar visual... incongruities (eh, that word works) always arise when I try and do that. Edit Perhaps it wasn't the lack of heavy borderlines.... I can't quite put my finger on it. My mind is failing me today. This post has been edited by Iain Peregrine on 25th June 2004 10:41 |

Quote (Aora @ 23rd June 2004 17:30) I mean, who actually thinks wearing a mini-skirt in battle is a good idea? Which leads nicely into the whole Amano art thing...I much preferred Amano's art over the sprites, especially regarding Celes' clothing. I hate that green bathing suit with a vengeance. Ha ha ha, you're my hero... That was what I forgot to say before. I like how you gave her an outfit that makes sense. I don't like it when people do fanart from the games, trying to make it look more realistic, but still sticking with stuff that just doesn't work...like the bikini. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Regarding the borderlines...I prefer to colour the lineart to make it less...I don't know, harsh? All the lines in the picture are coloured, though those on the hair were done far less subtly I have to admit, which might not be to everyone's liking...anyway, I'll make a mental note to do the lines darker next time.
And as for the clothing in general... I can die a happy person if I can get my hands on a patch for the game which alters Celes' sprite to be wearing something sensible. -------------------- Rules For Cooking Toast Be accurate when cooking toast Never try to guess Cook it til it smokes and then Twenty seconds less. |

Quote (Aora @ 25th June 2004 12:23) And the exposed part of her leg with the stitching...you'd have to ask Amano about that, really, I didn't do the clothes design. *points to reference picture* http://www.icestormcity.com/siovin/fmvceles03.jpg Where did you find that picture? Ha ha, I thought you'd just made that up on your own. I didn't realize that she actually wore pants like that. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Let's see...got it from the Celes shrine at: http://celes-chere.net/celes/
And..no, I can't do clothes design for squat really. All my original characters tend to wear rather mundane clothes, perhaps only made vaguely interesting due to the fantasy setting most of them are in. Yay for armour. ...you can bet none of them are wearing mini skirts or green swimsuits, at least. -------------------- Rules For Cooking Toast Be accurate when cooking toast Never try to guess Cook it til it smokes and then Twenty seconds less. |

Hey, I'm glad I found this thread. Mondo cool Celes!
... though it doesn't bug me to see Celes wearing the green swimsuit. If you don't complain about the physical ridiculousness of accruing the capacity to take 50 times as much damage (imagine about 100 HP toward the game's beginning changing to about 5,000 HP toward the end) while wearing the same outfit the whole time, then why bother complaining that tan pants are slightly preferable in battle to the green bathing suit. Don't mean it to be a rant, but the reality of combat-clothing is already thrown out the door in any FF game (meteors falling on heads and all). ... but, blah blah blah to that. Your pic does rule. -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

Well...that's a very good point. ...a very very good point.
The only thing I could think to say in response is that it probably bothers me more since Celes is one of my favourite game characters, and that I, personally, would be absolutely mortified if I had to go out and save the world wearing a swimsuit. Perhaps I'm just shallow, but it does irk me a little more than any of the other incongruities in Final Fantasy.. I mean, what's the point in saving the world if you can't do it in style? I suppose all it boils down to is the fact I just want my favourite character to look "cool", really. Green swimsuits..just..nooo. Anyway... glad you liked the drawing. -------------------- Rules For Cooking Toast Be accurate when cooking toast Never try to guess Cook it til it smokes and then Twenty seconds less. |
