Problem: I have Gau equipped with the Cursed Shield and am using Leap to improve his attack variation. However, I'm not sure if the battles I use Leap and the ones that he returns cause the counter to tick down.

I'm think it doesn't, but I want to make sure so I can be positive that I'm going to have a Paladin Shield after the 255th battle.

I don't think either of them count. I think only battles he finished do. wink.gif

I guess I don't need to worry now. Whew.
I've never gotten the Paladin Shield before, so I have no idea how I know when I have it (other than the death counter disappears.). Could I have help with that, too?

After the 255th battle, a message will come up saying "Curse dispelled on shield". It could be easy to miss, since you probably won't be looking at how much gold you're getting after that many battles. Either way, you'll definitely know when it happens. And it'll be one of the sweetest moments of your game-playing career smile.gif

Yes, you actually have to win a battle (fanfare plays, characters dance) for it to count toward the total.

I always thought that NO battles on the Veldt counted, but it counts so long as you don't leap?

If you get your Magic Points, you get your Cursed Shield count up. That's why Gogo will never be able to uncurse the shield, and why Leaping/returning Gau will prevent Cursed Shield from uncursing.

Like I said. If you get your Magic Points after battle (for learning Magic from Espers and all that stuff), your Cursed Shield is is one battle closer to becoming the Paladin Shld. If you don't get Magic Points for whatever reason (you flee, Gau returns, the battle is ended, what have you), nothing happens with your Cursed Shld.

This doesn't include monster formations without Magic Points though...maybe it's more precise to mention Magic Points/Experience. It's just that Gogo can't uncurse the Cursed Shld because he can't learn Magic.

Take so much time to upgrade it to paladin shield, and you must be win 255 battles with Your "cursed character" staying alive....

256 battles, y'all. If you win only 255, it won't do you much good seeing as your shield will still be cursed afterwards. Once you've completed 255 battles, the counter merely raises to 255. It's the 256th battle that resets the counter to 0, and at that point it becomes the Paladin Shield.

I'm actually quite surprised Djibriel and/or Ogopogo has yet to point that out. I'm stunned, really - stunned speechless. tongue.gif

Would you believe I read over that the entire time? But yes, 256.

Drat, time for another self-imposed hour in the Pit of Fire for missing it.
