Biography

Strago is an elderly gentleman living in Thamasa with his granddaughter Relm. Strago is respected among the townspeople, and doesn't seem to know anything about Espers or magic when Terra and Locke inquire about it. In his youth, Strago hunted the legendary beast Hidon but gave up when Hidon's habitat, Ebot's Rock, sunk into the sea.

Of course Strago was lying about the magic thing. Strago and the rest of Thamasa are descendants of the Magi, magic-using humans who fought in Esper wars a thousand years in the past. Strago joins the party after Relm is rescued from the burning house and provides some insights about the Warring Triad when the party is searching for the missing Espers. In the World of Ruin, Strago appears to be brainwashed into becoming a cultist of Fanatics' Tower. Visiting the tower with Relm in the party will cause Strago to come to his senses and rejoin the team.

Gameplay

Strago has above-average Magic but everything else is below average. He can only equip rods, a few daggers, robes, costumes, and light shields (just hold out for the ArmorBehemoth Suit). Strago's Lore spells are just like Blue Magic in other Final Fantasy games - if Strago observes one of these spells in battle and survives, he'll learn the spell at the end of the fight. The different Lores serve many purposes in combat, and it's worth it to search the world for Lore-using monsters.

Special Skill: Lore

Strago is the game's Blue Mage. His special skill is called Lore, with which he can use several monster attacks. In order for him to learn these attacks, he needs to be both present and conscious at the time of the enemy attack. This means he won't learn new skills when he's suffering from Wound, Petrify, Zombie, Dark, Sleep, Confused, Stop and Freeze. What happens after he has correctly witnessed the attack doesn't matter, be it Wound, Zombie or rheumatoid arthritis. To learn more about the Lores available, you can visit our page of all Lore plus our miniguide that shows you where in the walkthrough each can first be learned.
