I'm sad, too. I thought he had an agreement with nature that he would catch them, show them to everybody, and then let them live in peace. Getting his heart punctured by the poisonous barb of a sting ray doesn't fit that agreement...

I'm quite sad, too. He was awesome. sleep.gif

Truly a shame.

Although, when you look at it, despite him "putting them back" he DID basically harass lots of animals, right?

Considering the amount of time he spent with dangerous animals and the near-death encounters he's had, it was only a matter of time before something did him in. He had luck and skill on his side up until now.

Still, a Stingray? I always thought it would be something bigger and badder with more teeth that would do in the famous Australian nut-job. Oh well, at least it's a rare enough kind of death to merit his uniqueness.

I'm pretty indifferent towards his death in general, but I do feel bad for his Wife and two young children who he's left behind.

A flippin' Stingray.
Wow.

Well, he didn't die of a poisonous barb per se. Rather, Irwin was just unfortunate enough to have the barb pierce his heart which induced cardiac arrest. Very unfair, seeing as how it's only the second stingray-related fatality in, well, ever.

But yeah, I'm gonna miss the guy too. True showman, with an indomitable will and a gentle heart. He shall be missed.

Yes, I agree. This was bound to happen.

I do respect him and his work, though, he really did care about the environment and the animals.

When I saw the news on a site, I thought it was a cruel joke, but when I read about it in CNN, I was shocked...I didn't enjoy his show, but I found his job funny and different from the regular wildlife shows and I liked his carefree attitude towards dangerous animals...
I still feel pretty bad for that...I think I'm goint to miss him

Crikey.

And that word only recently became part of my permanent and often-used vocabulary.

An online acquaintance lost a bet (along with several of her friends) because of that stingray. She predicted a croc would bite his arm off and he'd die from bleeding; others predicted various causes of death; one even bet that he was immortal.

Steve Irwin, of Crocodile Hunter fame, has been fatally stabbed by a stingray.

His last moment of life was caught on film. He pulled the poisonous barb from his chest, where it had pierced his heart, and then died in the water.

Experts say he was not threatening the animal, but it might have felt trapped by Steve and the cameraman.

Steve, you crazy bastard, we'll miss you. I always figured you'd meet your end at the hands of the animals that you cared so much for. I dearly wish I could have been wrong about that.

Godspeed, Aussie.

well the thread has already been made
i will miss the aussie
strange isn't it after being around poisonous snakes and hungry crocadiles he dies by getting stabbed through the chest by a stingray.

Edit
At least he was man enough to pull the barb out from his own chest.

The ironic thing is that pulling the barb is what caused the most damage. I don't know if he would've lived if it had been left in, but he certainly didn't help his cause by ripping out a 20cm barbed stinger from his heart.

Damn you, you freak. I had my money set on giant squid... RIP man. sad.gif

The really sucky thing was how this happened while he was filming stuff for his daughter's show. Man is she ever gonna be bummed out...

Still, you can't help but admire this guy. Of all ways he could've died, he ended up getting the most unlikely, exotic one.

A grim day indeed...

It wasn't the stingray's fault that Steve died-he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I went to biology class today (yes my first day of sophmore schooling) and my teacher said that when a stingray flaps the "wings" on the side of it, it's spike on the back goes up and unfortunately, Steve was right behind it. Also, it would of been possible to save him if he didn't pull out the spike because when he did, all the blood (including the blood right from the heart) came rushing out. I still feel bad. He was a good person.

Dude. Like for real. I thought he would die from a croc biting his head off or something like that. I mean getting killed by a shark still would have been a better way for him to go. He was so cool too. I even have the croc hunter game and some other accesories from when I was younger. I miss him already! sad.gif That's it! I'm gonna sneak into the water and kill it! ph34r.gif

I was actually surprised that ANY animal took him down. When I heard he died, I was expecting something relatively more mundane, like a car crash or something.

**sigh** His death made me kind of sad, too.

Well I don't see how anyone could be surprised that a guy who makes a living off of harrassing dangerous animals eventually gets fatally attacked by HEY! A dangerous animal. If anything it makes perfect sense that it'd be in a situation like this where he's basically underwater, stranded in the ocean with medical attention not imediately on hand. And the pulling out the barb thing didn't seem like a brightest idea to pull of when underwater. Prolly too late the instant it tagged him anyway if it was directly into the heart as I believe it happened. Oh well. Anyway, sad...sure why not. Surprising, not in the least.

STEVE DIES!

I had no internet access on labor day, but I found out the next day about Steve Irwin. I was like who the hell is Steve Irwin? Then I clicked and saw refereces of him as the "Crocodile Hunter" so I realized who he was then.

Kind of funny how he easily lost to a stingray though. He's been used to stronger animals than that before.

I'm not really so shocked that he died since I never had interest in him or his show. I feel sorry for his fans.
