OK, maybe it's not the remake fans were waiting for, but it's something, right? Square-Enix's 2001 megahit will receive a high-definition makeover and be available as a PS3 game and a PS Vita download. Final Fantasy X follows hot on the heels of several other PS2 games receiving HD remakes on the PS3, including God of War I and II, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and the entire Sly Cooper Series.

This continues a trend of PS Vita games and PS3 games receiving near-identical ports. Multiplayer Vita games can play online against PS3 players and include many other connectivity features. Presumably, Final Fantasy X HD will have trophy support and scale up to 1080p, just like the other HD remakes mentioned above.

There is no release date yet for Final Fantasy X on the PS3 or PS Vita, but you can bet your memory card Caves of Narshe will report it as soon as it's made public.

This seriously bumps up the chance of me buying a Vita. As much as I love my 3DS, the Vita has a much better lineup both at launch and afterwards.

One more thing I should have included in the newspost - it's the International version of FF X, so if this comes out in North America (which it should), then it'll be the first time the United States and Canada get to play FFX International.

OK, that post got me interested. I know I can't afford a Vita for a long time, but maybe a PS3 isn't completely out of reach for me in a year or two...

Wow this sounds pretty good. It's good to see the trend of rereleases continuing to be graphics and music only, although I sometimes wish the music would remain the same. Then again, the only ones I'd seriously consider buying would be VII to IX, and they're getting the least attention. It's really weird. I wonder if FFXII: International will get a worldwide HD release next? That would be amazing.

It'll be interesting to see what the Trophies will be. I didn't particularly like XIII's achievements. Only a handful were fun, the others were just checkpoints. It'd be good if X gets some inspired challenges.

Do you guys think they'll improve the voice acting in addition to the graphics and music? I sure hope so >_>

Also, a cutscene skip option dry.gif

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!

Must buy. I would have used a re-release as an excuse to replay FFX regardless(though let's be honest, not having a legitimate excuse hasn't stopped me the last three times), but the chance to play the International version with its additional battles and features has me at hello.

....uh, what the heck?

The voice acting is already great. I sure hope that they wouldn't want to throw out a set of voice acting that is not only solid across the board but also iconic (Wakka? Tidus? Auron?). Unless by improve you mean add voices to minor characters or scenes that didn't have voice acting in them previously, though I'd imagine the later would be impossible to do.

And skipping cut scenes? What kind of person are you?

But yeah, adding VA to minor characters would be awesome. And also better synching with the lips, but that's really a minor issue that I don't care that much about >_>

Okay, now it just looks like they're purposely not remaking FFVII.

Maybe it's because it's the idea that's gotten the most attention and thus they'd be put under the most fan scrutiny if they did that.

Fun fact, PS3s are now as expensive as a Vita will be at launch, both are $249.99, so weigh which one would be more appealing to your lifestyle.

I wasn't going to get this until I heard that it's the international version. Now I am definitely interested

What's the difference between the North American and International versions?

Does the International version let you type vowels with accents at the expense of time when you hit the apostrophe and other similar keys?

Ok, skipping scenes leading up to a boss you've already attempted is a fair reason. I withdraw my criticism biggrin.gif

As I understand it, the tricky part with synching the facial movements was that the translation team had to try to write their dialogue based on the pre-established mouth movements intended for Japanese dialogue (I recall an interview with Alex Smith, the translator for FFX, that was published at the end of the official guide where he went into detail on the difficulty this posed). So perhaps that would be an issue to be solved by the improved graphics?

Actually, would it be easier (than in, say, animé) to re-animate the characters based on the choice of language? Or would that still be prohibitively expensive?

^^ Oh whoa, I see, so basically it's an improved and feature-added re-release plus some extras. Sounds like a good deal.

As it just so happens, it would be incredibly cheap to better synchronize the lipsync - at least for the real-time scenes. There, all you have to do is rewrite the instructions for the facial movements, and bam - you've got yourself some spicy lipsynced action.
For the real time scenes, however, they'd have to either completely reanimate the lip movements to sync them with the dialogue, or they'd have to re-record the dialogue entirely to fit the pre-existing lipflap. Although they'd probably be both very expensive, the latter would probably be the better bet. The voice actors have all improved dramatically in the last 10 or so years, I'd imagine, and a large portion of the fanbase hates the English dub for this game, so re-recording the dialogue is a win-win.

Wait you don't really think they'll rerecord all the voices? There's just no way it's going to happen. If anything it'll spoil the worst scene ever made. Ahhhhh haaaa haaaaa haaaaaa. Speaking of which I'm still convinced that a lot of the problem is the script as well as the voice acting.

I don't think that's possible. Where did you read it?

First off, I maintain that I like the script and the voice acting for the most part. That particular scene might be odd, but at the same time it's everything that I could possibly want from. It says everything about the characters, their relationship and their position of searching for joy in an overwhelmingly dark world, so I like it even if it is a bit ridiculous.

I do agree, though, that any alterations to the voice acting are extremely unlikely. It would be very difficult to bring back the original cast, and setting an entirely new cast seems even more unlikely. Also, as Josh said in chat: the cost incurred by re-doing the voice acting by whatever means would not produce any significant payback.

Quote (Me)
(I recall an interview with Alex Smith, the translator for FFX, that was published at the end of the official guide where he went into detail on the difficulty this posed)

That's where I heard it from. I was having a hard time finding a source earlier, but after a bit of searching I have found this bit from wikipedia, which appears to agree with what I remember reading:
Quote (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_X#Development)
The inclusion of voice, however, led to difficulties. With the game's cut scenes already programmed around the Japanese voice work, the English localization team faced the difficulty of establishing English-oriented dialogue and the obstacle of incorporating this modified wording with the rhythm and timing of the characters' lip movements. Localization specialist Alexander O. Smith described the process of fitting natural-sounding English speech into the game as "something akin to writing four or five movies worth of dialogue entirely in haiku form [and] of course the actors had to act, and act well, within those restraints."[49]

So, it sounds like you aren't too far off in questioning its possibility: it appears to have been quite the task, and I suspect it lead to several of the scripts' more interesting word selections at various points (the repeated use of "old man" rather than dad, perhaps?).

I can scarcely believe it. That is completely ridiculous. Still no excuse for Tidus' narration. I wonder if the original Japanese voice acting will be an option in the rerelease, at least on PS3.

^ This.

I would love to get VI and VII remakes on the PSP.

I played FFIV Complete Collection and it was great. That was mostly just a sprite and music cleanup. I feel like VI would probably be the same kind of remake. Even though I'd like to see a complete 3D graphics remake, it's not likely to happen.

FFVII on the other hand. . . I feel that to do it right would require more than a clean up of the original. It would require making all the graphics from the ground up. FFX already has good enough graphics that they will probably just clean them up a bit, but keep the game mostly the same.

My biggest gripe with the voices in X are the way that the clips of the English voices were sped up or slowed down to match the timing of the Japanese lines, which is why some parts sound a bit rushed. Other than that, I find the voice acting far superior to a lot of games I've played.

In regards to the "It should have been 7" issue, I do sort of agree that after all the desire and petitions and questions about it, going for X is a bit of a dick move, although not one that I have a problem with. Honestly, I would be more than happy if they remade VII using Crisis Core's engine. That game was damn pretty.

EDIT: In fact, the one reason I'd want a re-recorded script, is so that they would not allow you to change Tidus' name, and allow the characters to actually call him by name, rather than "newbie", "kid", "the newest guardian" "star player of the Zanarkand Abes!".

Of course they won't, but I it's not a bad idea, considering how much everybody hates the dub. Honestly, they're probably better off including the Japanese acting Also, this is something I never quite got...

why does everyone hate the laughing scene so much? The entire point is that it's supposed to sound forced, and then they laugh for real right afterwards. Seriously, it's just as forced and unnatural in the original Japanese, which is as a whole is a better dub. Just listen to it!

why does everyone hate the laughing scene so much? The entire point is that it's supposed to sound forced, and then they laugh for real right afterwards. Seriously, it's just as forced and unnatural in the original Japanese, which is as a whole is a better dub. Just listen to it!

If you like it then I'm happy something good's come out of it. Basically my issues with it are that it's an annoying sound in an unskippable cut scene that's pointless in the first place and goes on for far too long. It's irrelevant to me if it's meant to be forced or not. You're totally right that the Japanese dub is not much of an improvement. It sounds scary.

I would agree with your first point there, though I suppose that isn't too big of an issue when it's all said and done. I definitely agree with your gripe about being able to name your character, and thus being unable to have that character addressed vocally. I've named my own character only once in all of my gaming years, and it's an element that I don't care for much at all.

Now, I'm not exactly sure what all is meant by a graphics makeover, but I would assume that it'd be easier to do for FFX than for FFVII? I could be completely wrong here as I really don't know anything about the field, but FFX was a lot further along as far as proportioned body parts, 3D backgrounds, etc. Depending on how much of a graphics makeover it is, wouldn't they be able to recycle at least some of that material?

Going back to the recurring issue of the laughing scene, I guess that it is as unnecessary as any other character scene. I personally liked it because it isn't about the plot; it's just something ordinary. They're a cast of human beings who sometimes do silly things. I think that one of the greatest strengths that a videogame has over a movie as far as artistry is concern is the videogame's ability to show the non-essential moments, because I believe that it's the collection of those non-essential conversations and clips that make the characters real. Do they sound a little ridiculous in that particular scene? Well, yeah. And that's how I would want it to be.

One more thing I should have included in the newspost - it's the International version of FF X, so if this comes out in North America (which it should), then it'll be the first time the United States and Canada get to play FFX International.

This interests me a fair bit, I've always wished that I could have fought the extra bosses from the international version.
Still a bit unsure though as I usually don't buy things that I already have a version of-the only exception I made was for the WotL version of FFT because I found a used copy for a cheap price.
I may pick this up someday if the price is right.
