Now that the European club soccer season is winding down (thank God), Euro 2012 is nearly upon us. We did our first predictor tournament for Euro 2008, and it was a big hit, and so was our World Cup 2010 tournament a couple summers back.
I'll be sending out PMs to everyone who played in those, so when you get one or see this thread, feel free to post. Due to the time it takes to get it set up, with all the rosters and such, I think we need to get a good dozen people in to make it a worthwhile venture. For those who weren't around a couple years ago, we run a game for major soccer tournaments in which you choose a winner, and also the results and first scorer of each individual fixture. You get points based on the quality of your guesses, and usually the winner gets a prize. Tiddles won the World Cup 2010 one, and he doesn't care even a little bit about soccer, so it's a game that's fun for diehards and nonfans alike, and only will take about five minutes a day to play. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I enjoyed participating in the World Cup picking things, since I had to do research as I know next to nothing about soccer. I would participate again.

I'd like to see it. I'd like to play it. If only so its more amusing when the surprise results roll in or the injury-prone players for the big sides (Read: all of them) injure themselves and cause panic as the results become less predictable.

You forgot to mention how the last Euro sparked my musical debut in the 8-bit arena. Also, showcasing my ability to string together more curses than should ever be allowed. I'm in, but you knew that already! Looking forward to the 'Italians are divers!' comments everyone will be throwing my way

Sounds like fun, I'd be interested in participating!
Does it work the same way as the fantasy soccer? Or is it just a bracket? Either way I'l definitely try it out. |

It's a little different. What we do is that we ask you to guess the final score of each match, as well as the first scorer, before kickoff. So, you can choose every group match right away, or do a fresh set of picks every day, and then do every knockout game as soon as the teams are known. You get points for getting the winning team right, for getting one or both of the goalcounts right, and for getting the first scorer right. There's a little more to it than that but those are really the basics.
We even have a random guess generator for people who don't know soccer as well! -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I'm in. I live in a part of the country where American Football is the big thing and no one has ever heard of soccer. Would prefer to have interesting people to chat about the Euro with.

The game is up at http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/contests/euro2012/ now! You can sign up from that page, and you could in theory make predictions for all the group stage games, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it yet because the rosters aren't final and therefore you can't actually pick first scorers.

I know next to nothing about this, but I'm definitely in. I did some limited research to pick my champ and will pick the available games soon.

The rosters were finalized today, so I got them all added into the database. It's now possible to predict all the group stage matches if you want to get ahead. Predictions for the champion and the first match are available for selection and editing until only five minutes before the first match kicks off, don't forget.
Today's protip: don't pick Wayne Rooney until England's third game! He's suspended until then! -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

With the first match taking place this Friday (Greece v Poland, one of the host countries) you should all remember to make your picks! Or, join at all if you haven't already. Though you should have, because you want to be one of us. One of usssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

If you know of any roster changes that are happening now due to injury, feel free to let me know. I've been trying to keep track, and have replaced Cahill and Lampard, but if there are any others you hear about, definitely post about it so I can keep things up to date. I think injury replacements are allowed all the way up to a team's first match.

I'm sure there will be more English "injuries" to come. Seems like the Euros are the new international friendlies for English players.

Could you fix a link to the contest under "CoNtests" on the main page? Currently the only link there is to the old world cup.

Andrea Barzagli of Italy has been ruled out but I'm not sure who his replacement is.
This can be a usuful site too, but bear in mind not all of the players listed are out of the Euro's, but looking at their return date can be helpful: http://www.physioroom.com/news/euros_2012/injury_table.php EDIT: Ok, so some sites are still saying he's only doubtful but, either way, Davide Astori would apparently be his replacement if he misses out. This is the last evening to get signed up in time to pick a champion - the first game kicks off tomorrow. Another one: Ivo Iličević of Croatia has been replaced by Šime Vrsaljko.
It's hard to find injury news that isn't just about England. :/ |

Yeah, that's for sure, Cefca. For what it's worth, the official site still has Barzagli with his team, but not Ilicevic. Official site says that Astori has flown in, but the actual replacement hasn't been made yet.
