Caves of Narshe Forums > Final Fantasy IV > Favorite Female Character

Posted by: Ultimaniac 22nd August 2009 19:50
I always like the female characters in FF games the most. IV is no exception.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually like Porom the best. She's my favorite character in the game. She's smart, polite, mature, and responsible (not to mention adorable), despite being only five years old.

Posted by: Sandyboots 23rd August 2009 13:45
I'm quite the opposite from you. Rarely do I find female characters interesting. Something about the way they are portrayed. That being said FF is not as bad as other series, it has it's fair share of solid females.

I'll agree with you, Porom is awesome, for all the reasons you listed. She is one of my favs in this game, along with her twin brother and Edge.

Rydia is waaay more popular though. And Rosa has her two or three loyal fans. Personally I like both of them the same. Porom is the only one that stands out for me.

As I expected, my choice of Rydia is in the majority. Summon is just awesome, plain and simple.

Posted by: Magitek_slayer 24th August 2009 08:54
I chose rosa.

I always had a thing for rosa and i always found her beutifull.

She is also really powerfull as a white mag

My second choice is rydia.

I wonder people..If i had been born 10 years later maybe i would have been jaded and a ff8 fanboy?

I tell you, Rydia is so cool!
Well, except for the fact that her drawing when she was older(original FFIV art) looks like a big dump... dry.gif
Her Summon is really useful, and she has a great storyline. Even if the whole story doesn't revolve around her.

back then in 1991 i think it was or 1990 there was less grapics than when ff6 came out,so its normal.

Even then, final fantay IV the american version looks great for its age.

You haven't looked her old american art, have you? Those things still give me nightmares.

They don't appear that good to me. FFIV was originally in development for the NES, thus it has NES like graphics. Look at paladin Cecil, he is a cheap recolor of a FFIII knight.

And to stay on topic, it's nice to see Rosa still has her few supporters, she needs more love. And as expected Rydia is owning the poll. Apparently summons>white magic.

Posted by: sungkwon 23rd September 2009 00:58
I think maybe Rydia's popularity comes from her being in the party the longest, IIRC.

She's with you in the beginning as a child, where she is useful like Tellah in that she can cast black AND white magic. Sure you get Rosa when you have her as a child by killing the antlion, but then Rosa gets kidnapped. By the time you get her back into the group, you're already heading underground and meet up with Adult Rydia, who is now much more useful because now she has more magic and more summons.

So total playtime with Rydia > Rosa.

Just a theory wink.gif

Posted by: JuneLovesLOTR 23rd September 2009 19:21
She's also the most developed character. Rose is just Cecil's lover and Porom isn't in the game long enough to really develop a deep personality. Plus, adult Rydia has the outfit going for her. Can you say hot!

Perhaps so. I'll counter with this: Kain is probably the most popular FFIV character along with Rydia, but he isn't around that much (at least not more than Cecil).

The time she spends with the party wasn't enough for me to get a grasp of her full personality, I learned more about Edward in the little time he was available than about her.

Skimpy outfit doesn't count, Rosa also has one, a lil' more decent but still...

Despite that The After had Rydia and Kain more often in the spotlight than any other character, I believe Porom, Edward and specially Palom were the most developed ones. It was only fair after being ignored in the first one. (Although Rosa and Cid got the shaft again).

So, is it the green hair? Then again, Celes is more popular than Terra.

Is it the tragic death of her mother? But nobody cares about Edward and Tellah despite them losing Anna.

Is it the child->adult thing?... That could be, but I'm still more inclined to the summons, white magic isn't "cool" enough.

Posted by: JuneLovesLOTR 26th September 2009 16:32
Maybe. I personally have always like that arcane magics over the divine. And summons are awesome. But my "most developed" comment was pertaining to the female characters only. Yes, you could argue that Porom is just as or more developed as a character, but she was both added and taken out of the game near the middle of the game. Psychology teaches us that one is more apt to remember those things that come at the beginning and the ones at the end or a list or story. You get Rydia early on, then lose her in a memorable way, then end the game with her not only in your party but as the only arcane spell caster.

Posted by: Jinnai Himura 26th September 2009 23:19
Rydia. I was reeling from the awesomeness of Cecil turning into a Paladin and then Rydia's mature transformation was another extremely cool character development

Posted by: Kame 28th September 2009 05:56
As much as I like Rydia, I'll have to go with Rosa. She's the girl of the main character and sticks by her man all the way through the game.

actually..

The mixtures of colours and expression of cecil made him seem older.

I always used to think he was a middle aged man.

And thing about rosa is,she is a very good person and although there is a love story, there is someting about her.

She is very loving and caring.

Hmm i actually really liked the secondary characters who disappear.

Tellah:His sad story was touching,i felt sorry for him and edward.

Although i hated playing with him.

Stupid hide ability pissed me off.

Posted by: ChibiSakuraNinja 25th November 2009 04:10
i had to say rydia... just because of how strong she is with her magic.

and on top of that, she has an much higher strength stat than rosa and porom... and i hated having to waste money to get rosa some arrows in the GBA game!!! DX<

Rosa for sure. You know she has to be good looking when the protagonist nearly

dooms the world just to save her by handing over the final crystal wink.gif . Ok, party

stupidity aside I really enjoyed the relationship between Cecil and Rosa. Very

touching wub.gif

Paladin Cecil looks like a white-haired prettyboy, at least in the SNES version. And an actual prettyboy, not some emo goth prettyboy (who just might be the antagonist in the seventh game...). So much that I was struck by how similar he and Rosa looked in their menu portraits.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to say about this choice here. Rydia is the most interesting character, but I've never quite gotten a good grip on her personality. That might change if I were to play the Advance or DS versions, with their improved scripts (compared to FFII US).... Rosa seems relatively one-dimensional, even if a loyal member of the party (the same cannot be said of some of the boys, lol), and Porom even more so.

Perhaps I'll pick Rydia.

Nothing is more blissful than having a White Mage like Rosa to aid your troopers in battle.

Posted by: Chewbekah 19th September 2010 21:30
It's been a long time since I've played this game but my favorite female character is Rosa, not because of her character personality or anything but because she's pretty much the one that beat the game for me.

I had been playing FFIV on the SNES and had gotten to this cave. I had no healing potions left and had to run from every battle. I was fed up at this point so I stopped playing. Then a year later I picked up the game again and decided to try and finish it.

Anyway, I didn't realize I was that close to the end and suddenly I was fighting Zeromus. Everyone in my party had died except for Rosa and I couldn't revive them. She was low on HP and was pretty much going to die on Zeromus's next attack. I had two choices. Heal or cast White. I chose to cast White and thankfully that was the final blow and Zeromus died. That is one of the few personally epic gaming moments that I can remember.

Posted by: MogMaster 19th September 2010 22:37
I picked Rydia. Fiery personality, ninja seducer, destructive powers of the cosmos- hows that for a craigslist personal? Second I'd even take Porom over Rosa- all her stats for healing are higher and in the GBA version she consistently heals for more HP than Rosa.

I always liked Rydia the most. In the sequel, The After Years, I liked Porom the most, though. She's grown up and...PINK HAIR!!! tongue.gif

Tough choice if we're going by appearance alone.

For some reason, this picture of Rosa looks kinda like Brawl Zelda but more generic.

Also, Rydia's rather absurd fashion style kinda explains why I couldn't ever make out what she was wearing from her SNES sprite.

Posted by: trismegistus 22nd October 2010 03:53
To be honest, I've got a soft spot for Rosa. I know I was just over in the VII forum blasting Tifa for not having any character, and Rosa's characterization extent is 'getting kidnapped'', but...I think Cecil might be the only main character in a Final Fantasy game to be married, even though he sleeps far away from his wife, and even wears his armour to bed in case she tries to come in in the middle of the night and to have a casual chat with him about what innocents he got to kill today. Plus she's lovely, white magic is always essential, and I miss the old days of white mages wielding bows. Rydia's probably the best character in the game, but, and this is rare for me, I gotta toss my hat into the blonde's corner.

I think Rosa looks a lot cuter here:

Yeah. In her SNES adult sprite, I used to think she was covered in seaweed. laugh.gif

Well, Cecil and Rosa weren't actually married until the very end of the game, which would explain why they didn't sleep together before. In The After Years, they do sleep together, but instead of one bed, they put two single beds together. laugh.gif

Aha, fair enough, though that still doesn't change that it's an odd relationship we see at the beginning of the game. I never played The After Years, how is it?

It's a good game. You have everybody from the original game (Except Tellah) plus a few new characters to use. They added bands, which are special attacks two or more of your party members can combine their powers to do, and a few can break the damage limit (over 9999 damage). Kain gets a nice makeover later in the game. smile.gif Cecil's sprite though looks all gray and ugly, but oh well.

Rydia. She's kind, caring, intelligent, and unlike every female character in a video game up until Final Fantasy IX, she was entirely capable of defending herself, and never needed to be rescued by her love interest. Beyond that, she did have a love interest, whom she detested and lectured.

Posted by: Vihera 17th December 2010 09:39
holy bajeebus, Rosa!

cecil (see-sil, i refuse to pronounce his name seh-sil, its too lame sounding)

i got a thing for white mages, though.

robes on the floor... *drool* HAWTNESS!

Posted by: IronRoto 11th December 2011 22:21
While it's very close, I had to take Rosa. When I first played IV for the SNES in the early 90s, I actually felt like I needed to save her. I felt the relationship between her and Cecil was that well done. However, Rydia is pretty cool herself. Her abilities are second to none, she suffers quite a plight throughout the game. My vote goes to Rosa, however, probably simply because of her status as the game's main heroine. Weak, but I guess that's my reasoning.

Haha! Wow! This thread is kind of old.. I'm really surprised to find that I hadn't voted in it. So I thought for awhile and I had to give Rydia my vote. I just really love her character and her physical design. She was really earthy and made such an amazing vision of a summoner, to me. As a kid I imagined her really being in touch with the earth and drawing massive spiritual power from it.

Though I will say, in battle she could be frustrating to have, especially at first, having such low HP. I felt that Rosa was a more useful character for the most part. We all know you can't make it through the game without a good white mage.

Posted by: Metal King Slime 4th June 2012 06:12
Gonna be boring and go with Rydia, even though I do think she's a pretty overrated character.

I never liked Rosa, and Porom never really made an impression on me.

Posted by: Tchy 10th June 2012 16:01
U voted for Rydia cause Rosa is like a stereotype girl always saying "Oh please save me" but Rydia is a strong girl (even if she has low hp) and Porom I don't know I just wouldn't pick her

Posted by: Spooniest 29th July 2013 12:38
This is a case in which I will say screw political correctness.

I chose Rydia because I always found her adult form sexually exciting. She doesn't do anything particularly overt, but Rosa always struck me as too much of a goody-two-shoes. Rydia is dangerous, mysterious, and above all, passionate and strong-willed.

She's hot stuff, and I don't care who hears me say it.

Posted by: St Khael 29th July 2013 14:35
I was never fond of Rosa when I was younger, but in later years and attempts to play, I found her to be an amazingly strong woman in her own right. one she gets past he r nigh on blind love for Cecil and comes to terms with it,, she develops an emotional strength not often seen in modern female leads. One also has to take into account that during her captivity there is a large chance that she had been raped at tortured, which yes, I know isn't something we want to think about, but in order to keep Cecil going, they must had to do something to her short of crucifying her, I love this lady!

Coming back from that ordeal shows as strength we have only since seen in Terra Branford who came back from hell with a lack of her memory and a hidden ferocity

Rydia always has been one of my favorite characters due to the changes that come over her throughout the story. Her forgiveness of Cecil in the end shows a kinder ha=art than many and a strength beyond most. Coming to terms with her mother's death y choice and not demand worked wonders for her in the later game. Although, I think we can all agree in her hair being freay as all get out in the DS version. *Shudder* I've seen some good cosplays of her though.

Prom will forever hold a special place in my heart as she was the perfect sister in my opinion, keeping her brother in line while remaining spiritual and not afraid to leave the temple and adventure the world. Heaven bless her little pixel soul.

Posted by: RavenLalonde 29th July 2013 21:15
It is a hard choice for me. I like Rosa because I like her gentleness, but Rydia is more useful to me as a PC. And Porom... you gotta love Porom. I think of all of them, though, I would have to say Rydia is my favorite, even if she is a little overrated.
Edit
Hmm, you know, actually, in the course of the last few months, Rosa has grown on me. A lot. I think that now that I am a little older, I would put Rosa on top any day. She is so much stronger than Rydia; I mean, Rydia is strong too, but comparing her to Rosa is like comparing Eowyn to Arwen. Rydia is a great character in her own right, but she's got nothing on Rosa. Except possibly magic. She has better magic.

Posted by: Death Penalty 1st August 2013 14:09
Solid necro work there, Spooniest.

This is a great question, because each of the three ladies here represent a distinctly different type of personality. Porom is entertaining, snarky, etc. Rosa, though not perhaps strong on the battlefield, strikes one as a strong and balanced individual, the kind one would expect in a long-term relationship, supportive yet not naive. Rydia is mysterious, powerful but uncertain: even once grown, you still feel she's young.

So, to be honest, I don't really have a favorite of the three; my prefered varies depending on what sort of mood I'm in.
