I've gotten the leagues set up, and my first team bought (for exactly £100mm, thank you very much!). If you want in, you need to sign up and build your team before 13 August if you want to join the head-to-head league, and if you don't want to be a week behind in the classic league.
As we talked about in the other thread, we're moving to the official Barclay's-sponsored fantasy game this year, away from Yahoo. Sorry about that, but the BPL one really is a much better application. To sign up, go to Fantasy Premier League and fill out all the pertinent details. Once you've created your first team, go to the "Leagues" tab and select to join a league. Our two leagues are "CoN Head-to-Head" and "CoN Classic," and the passwords you need are: Head to Head 301438-88350 Classic 301438-88368 Once you're signed up, make sure you post your team names here so that we can match up teams to CoN usernames. Unlike last year, I want to keep these leagues CoN-only, as it's just more fun that way (unless, of course, interest dies out, and then we'll re-evaluate). For discussion's sake, I had a very hard time creating a team with which I was happy this time around. I think the reason is because I'm used to Yahoo's method, which doesn't include substitutes, so I found myself having to buy four more players than I'm used to. I think I got some decent buys, though, and my bargain shopping could have been worse. I feel like I'm bound to get some decent points just about every week, despite not having too many huge standout players. Just like last year, though, I have absolutely zero Liverpool players on my roster. The Liverpool defense isn't strong enough yet to justify buying a defensive player, or even Pepe Reina, because he's likely to be just shelled with shots again this year. The midfield, well, who the heck knows who will even be playing in that midfield? They have what seems like dozens of midfielders right now, and so far you can't be sure which ones you'll see on a given day. I would think that the starting lineup for week 1 will be Kuyt, Miereles, Lucas, and Adam, but I can't say that with enough certainty to spend a slot on any of them. And even with the raw talent up front, the offense was still pretty anemic in the second half of last year, so I'm not looking to buy Suarez or Carroll either. I did buy two Americans, though. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Done and done.
My team is Norfolk 'n' Chance. I'm hoping the profanity filter on their site won't have a problem with that... having to pick the subs too does make it tricky to stay in budget. I know some people buy their subs in as the cheapest possible purchases and never use them. However, I think it pays better to go for a more rounded team. I made the same decision regarding Reina, and so have plumped for slightly cheaper goalkeepers with a better back four (I hope). I did take the risk on Adam though - I'm hoping that after pursuing him so adamantly, Kenny must play him almost weekly? Right?? Could be a mistake... I should point out - I think the scoring system is very different to the Yahoo one, so those of you who haven't played this system before might want to swot up! -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |

Hmm yeah the scoring system is different. Defenders can't make as many points. Everything seems to be geared towards who scores or creates goals. Also as far as I'm aware I can't change the formation to a 3-4-3.
I've got two Americans as well, Friedel (sub) and Holden. Adam's flying the flag for Scotland it seems. I'm surprised you didn't pick any Liverpool players R51, the pairing of Suarez and Adam is an absolute must for me. The big decision was which one is going to be captain. I'm guessing Gerrard will play further back now. I've got Taarabt as well so I really hope he doesn't get sold to a team outside England. My team name is Rabbit Owsla Killers because I'm still on a Watership Down high. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. This is the year I take the win away from Sweetdude. No dice. None. At any rate, I've noticed the same issue with not being able to switch formations, but beyond that, I like the setup of their system better.
My team is Methpanthers FC. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

My team name is Rabbit Owsla Killers because I'm still on a Watership Down high. You can change formation at any time, by using your subs. Bring in a midfield sub to replace a striker, and you're at a 4-5-1 immediately. Ditto for defense, or a 4-3-3 for bringing in a striker in place of a midfielder. It's not immediately clear from looking, but you can do it. Stu's one of my Americans, too - the other is Dempsey. I could be convinced to take Suarez at some point, as he's currently at the same price level as Bent, who I pretty much always select. The problem is that I'm still not convinced how many goals are going to be cannibalized by Carroll and the midfield with Liverpool, or how often Kenny might play Kuyt in Suarez' place for a half. It's similar to why I wouldn't take Drogba or Torres to start the year - they'll probably both be fighting against each other for play time, so you can't predict from where the goals will come. Same goes for Charlie Adam. Clearly he won't be sold, and Henderson won't be sold, and Downing won't be sold. But beyond that, how much time will each of them get on the pitch? Miereles and Lucas were revelations under Daglish, and Maxi had some big, big games. Kuyt has a work rate unlike anyone I've seen in the BPL, Gerrard is the talisman, and Aquilani is rejoining the team after his Juve loan. Nobody wants Poulsen or Cole, and while clearly not all of these guys will dress for most games, you still have to wonder how often you'd have to sub out a Liverpool midfielder simply because he's not likely to play that week? -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

The more I listen to your (pretty strong) argument regarding the Anfield midfield, the more I feel like Adam isn't gonna be worth the money.
I did have Friedel - but then I had a panic about whether he really would be guaranteed games ahead of Gomes...and found a way to afford De Gea instead. I'm sure I'll regret it all by Xmas! -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |

Number of things DP knows about soccer: 0.
But would I let a silly triviality like that hold me back from enjoying the CoN Premier League? Heck no! So out of the people who expressed interest in the last thread, I think only Cefca is yet to sign up? I'm working on getting a few other people from outside the core soccer group, which is probably obvious given DP's inclusion.

I signed up as Primary United, but since this is the first fantasy league of any kind, I will suck. I hope that is okay with everyone. At least it's soccer.

Yeh sorry, I like to leave it a little closer to the start time, but I suppose it doesn't matter about all the transfers taking place when you've got unlimited transfers until the start. I'll sort my team out either today or tomorrow. Quote I signed up as Primary United, but since this is the first fantasy league of any kind, I will suck. I hope that is okay with everyone. OK, if anyone else was thinking about getting in, the Head to Head league will lock down tonight. Classic can be joined any time, of course.

I think it's starting to look really bad for Arsenal after Fabregas's departure... Hopefully they'll still do well in the tables. |

Hmm. I'm pretty happy with my team. I can't think of anything to do so I'll probably just keep the transfer open. If I don't get an extra transfer next week because of the unlimited transfers this week that would be pretty annoying.

Well if you don't use your weekly free transfer, it carries over to the next gameweek (you can never have more than 2 free transfers this way though). Other than that, I don't think you'll have any more transfers next week because of it. |

I know at least Mike had Dzeko bought. Anyone else? I thought I was having a great day when Best scored a brace and Dempsey scored a single in the early match, and then THAT happened.
Edit Oh. I sat Best today so I could start Chicarito. Awesome. This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 28th August 2011 21:26 -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I can only laugh at Arsenal sometimes. At least I can rely on them to get me a tonne of fantasy points when I pick players from whoever is playing them. Ashley Young got me 40 points by himself.

So, how is the season shaping up for everyone so far? These past few weeks my points have skyrocketed because of Van Persie's ridiculous scoring rate.
It's nearly impossible to predict who will win games sometimes with scorelines such as 8-2 man u - arsenal, 6-1 man city - man u, 5-3 arsenal - chelsea, but i guess theres still over half a season left to see what happens. Any predictions for the top four finish at this rate? |

Top four finish in our league or in the actual BPL? I tend to move comments that are more about the real-life league to the "Football 10-11" thread or else I'll go insane.
My team has been abysmal so far in our leagues. I'm bottom of the group in head-to-head and only middle of the pack in the standard league, and that just blows my mind. I chalk a lot of it up to the fact that I'm used to Yahoo's leagues, and I haven't quite figured out how to optimize my team to match the way that the official leagues work. I'm messing with my team this week to try to turn it around. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Ah I meant top four finish in actual BPL haha. But yeah, my first few weeks were pretty awful because I had no clue what was going on, plus me signing a bunch of injured players like an idiot. I fixed it by spending like, 16 points on transfers one week to try to turn it around, and it worked really well.
But I think I'm getting the hang of it now, making a transfer a week. Thank god alot of the players on my team are really consistent and generate a solid number of points every week. (go van persie!) |

My thoughts echo you two. Only now am I starting to get the hang of this. I think the next thing I need to learn is to not be squeamish about form. I was close to buying Ba and Van Persie but bottled it. Now I've got to spot the next two or three form scorers and pick them up. Next gameweek could be huge.
I also gutted my team at the cost of 16 points. Best thing I've done yet. I'd say to anyone on the fence about spending the extra points to just go for it. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

I take it you've already used your wildcard? Incase people didn't know, you get two wildcards a season: one you get at the start that you can use anytime and one you can only use in the January transfer window. A wildcard allows you to make as many transfers as you want at no cost one time. This post has been edited by Cefca on 1st November 2011 22:56 |

Quoted from the site as they word it better than me:
Quote A Wildcard allows you to make unlimited free transfers throughout a Gameweek. You can use up to 2 a season. Playing your wildcard will remove any points deductions from transfers already made in the same Gameweek. One Wildcard can be played at any time, the January Wildcard can only be used between Gameweeks 20 and 23 (2 Jan 11:30 to 4 Feb 11:30). When playing a Wildcard, any saved free transfers will be lost. You will be back to the usual 1 free transfer the following Gameweek. |
