Yo, was wondering what peoples opinions where of the Fallout series? I mean I did it all backwards and started with new vegas first n went backwards to the original fallout. But I didnt really get on with 1 & 2, seemed a bit too hard to control for my taste but I thought 3 was great and New Vegas was even better with the whole NCR n legion and the fact you can mod ya weapons etc. what do you all think of the series and do you know of any similar post apocalyptic games u can recommend?

Since I've only played the two most recent entries, I'll just make a general comment.

My response to Fallout was along the lines of "eh." It's a very neat concept, no doubt there. Furthermore, I think that the game environment is well executed in both titles I can justly speak of. I just found the game world to be more shallow than that of the Elder Scrolls series. If there was a larger world, a bit more variety to the landscape and more depth in terms of groups and inventory, I would probably like it quite a bit. As it is, I didn't end up playing them a whole lot.

Fallout 2 was a pretty fantastic entry in the series. I started on the first and 2, then also went into Fallout: Tactics, which was pretty awesome as well - great squad management and tactical game that I'd definitely recommend.

The first two set the scene for the whole series wonderfully, with that great sense of desolation, that 1950s land of tomorrow ideal, and the comedy of Pipboy. In honesty, I really like these top-down style ones better, since they did have more variety in their execution, and the rewards for non-combat solutions were so much greater.

When I booted up Fallout 3, I rolled myself a smooth-talking, scientific genius who was okay with hand-to-hand and small guns. Mostly, I was expecting to negotiate my way through most problems and abuse what was left of the world's science, like I saw was available in the first two. However, it wasn't really so. The options were there now and again, and they never felt contrived by any means, but they were just too few to justify as making your primary skill, I found. At the end of the day, you were more often than not going to have to kill things.

However, they did well in maintaining a method of parlaying your way out of the final battle, which I did like, so I did get some of the rewards I sought.

Still, it was as eloquent as I found the first two to be.

Anyways, that's my few cents worth.

I voted New Vegas because there's a lot of room for talking or running your way out of trouble. I know exactly what you mean in 3. Also the setting is western apocalypse in that order which was a bit more enjoyable than 3's wasteland. And the music was basically straight out of Firefly. The factions were better too. In anticipation for 3 coming out I played a fair bit of 2 but I suppose I didn't have to patience to play it through to the end. I think I had something else I was playing as well at the time.

New Vegas all the way. Put Luck to 10 and hit the Strip!

If you want a post-apocalyptic FPS RPG you're going to want to play Stalker first. The game world is a nuclear apocalypse and in a lot of ways it's better than Fallout 3. Leans more towards an FPS but there's plenty of RPG stuff to get on with. I'd recommend Deus Ex as well even though it's not strictly an apocalypse. The world is pretty much on the brink of one however. Everything's falling apart and you've got to make your way through it so in that sense it's like Fallout 3. It's the end of the world and the beginning of another, so it could be similar to what you're looking for. It's more RPG than FPS. Plus it's still my favourite game of all time after all these years. smile.gif If that's still not enough then remember FFVI and CT have apocalyptic bits in them. Might not be an FPS but if you haven't played either than I'd heartily recommend them if you're in the mood for some end of the world roleplaying. Finally it's a weird apocalypse and miles away from Fallout but Bastion has a lot going for it and I think it's technically an RPG. That would be a last resort, but it's still a cracking game.

Yeah I mean I did prefer New Vegas to all of em, purely due to the factions, and the HUGE variety of endings, Ya gota admit the NCR vet rangers look the bomb! plus even now I keep finding new stuff to do and discover!! ive been playing it for months on end now!!! little hidden quests that arent displayed like fetching the rangers body from outside the repconn HQ, Mr New Vegas the DJ even talks about it when you do it! and like, getting the super powerful copy of an old M1 Garand rifle called "This Machine" off one of the officers at camp mc carran just for hacking a computer n dropping a guy in it that isnt even a named quest! plus the way different towns/factions have an opinion of you by things you do to/for them. and yeah in NV unlike 3 you can get outa situations widout fighting more so the best skills are science, repair, barter n speech. Plus I mean come on, have the initial Wild Wasteland perk and the game just becomes weird in places...like the aliens behind the farm in the north, and the skeleton in the fridge near goodsprings in reference to Indiana Jones and the crystal skull thing bassicly saying that you wont survive a nuclear fallout by getting in a fridge...just cracks me up!!! ill check out them games you mentioned, they PC or can u get em on 360? cos my laptop doesnt handle games very well so I gots me a 360.

They're reasonably old games so Deus Ex (2000) and Stalker (2007) could run on most PCs. Deus Ex on probably anything from the last 5 years at least and Stalker on a lot, even if the graphics have to be turned right down. Bastion is on Xbox Live Arcade.

I haven't seen Indiana Jones since I was little so I totally missed the skeleton in the fridge reference. That's really cool.

I'd pick Fallout 3 as one of my favorite games of this generation of consoles. And I still consider it my favorite Bethesda game, though Skyrim might take that position now.

The reason I'd pick 3 over New Vegas is that 3 had a special feeling that neither New Vegas nor the older Fallout games didn't give me. I think the story, growing up and leaving the vault, and the setting of D.C. made it feel more political, more epic.

I have only played the first two games briefly, and while they were good, I have much more experience with the console games so it's easier to comment on them. I preferred New Vegas a lot to 3, the Mojave felt much more interesting in general compared to the capital Wasteland. I wasn't that big of a fan of the grey-green tone of 3 either. The story of NV was also more interesting in my opinion as you could make choices.

Having only played Fallout 3 I felt obligated to vote for it. However I have heard that New Vegas is superior but I haven't got round to buying it. I have a terrible habit of starting games then not finishing them and moving onto something else.

Consequently I have yet to beat Fallout 3... or Bioshock... or DA2... or Red Dead Redemption. To give you an idea of my predicament I have owned Skyrim for about 6 months and have not played it yet due to there being no room on my PS3 memory.

Until I get around to playing Fallout 2 (and I should since, if I'm remembering right, it's abandonware), I have to pick between the last two games. Fallout 3 wasn't bad by any means, but the world just bores me, particularly due to the barf-colored landscapes. New Vegas was a big step in the right direction, but people complain about the "empty" feeling, and I can't disagree. I'd still rather replay that than F3, though.

Out of the two I've played - 3 and NV - it has to be NV. The whole game felt much more nuanced, from the ability to modify your weapons, to the whole karma/reputation system, which was far more in-depth than in the way Fallout 3 handled things. In 3 there was basically a set of good guys (the Brotherhood) and the bad guys (Enclave), yet in NV there was no strict good guy/bad guy set up. You could be an evil character and remain neutral towards different factions, or be a much more black or white character and be much more inclined to one faction or another. The fact that it was essentially up to you was a huge upside; in Fallout 3 I always felt I was being encouraged into allying with the Brotherhood, but in Fallout NV I felt able to make my own choices - and to even change my mind on occasion.

I know some felt New Vegas had a lot of empty spaces, but the whole Nevada wilderness felt even more foreboding and dangerous than in Fallout 3. It was also nice to escape the strange greenish hue that perpetuated throughout Fallout 3...

New Vegas just had a lot more character than 3 did. The world was 'empty' in terms of space and what was open to explore, but that being said, what -was- there generally was awesome. If anyone played the Old World Blues dlc, I think that's my favorite bit of Fallout of any game so far. The humor, the bleakness, the insane monsters and the madmen behind them, all the good stuff you'd expect from a game in this setting.

Beyond that, I'd be echoing what has already been said.

Interesting how its a mostly NV crowd here, most other groups online and my friends seem to prefer 3,
Personally as the games are heading in different directions I won't bother trying to rank them.
I played the godawful ps3 port of 3 and loved it, now 10 or so hours into the PC version of NV. I'm just setting myself up at the strip and its like the game really begins there, the world of factions suddenly opens up to you and its all a bit daunting I must say! I'm spoiled for choice and don't know what to do from here, as I don't really feel like continuing the main quest.

One thing I will say as far as comparison goes is that I haven't seen anything in NV that matches up to the feel of Megaton, I loved that town for some reason..
