Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC Dropping

Though there have already been a few minor DLCs for Square-Enix's recently-released Final Fantasy XIII-2, like extra costumes for the main characters and some fights in the Colosseum, a larger pack is dropping within the next week. The first major piece of DLC, titled "Sazh: Heads or Tails?" is being released on XBox Live on Tuesday, 28 February, and on PlayStation Network on Wednesday, 29 February. Additionally, this will unlock the card games that were awkwardly left out of the casino in the original game. On the same days, another DLC will be available giving access to even more costumes for the main characters.

The costume piece isn't really all that exciting, in my opinion, but it will be very nice to have some DLC in the game, especially since it appears to feature Sazh, a really fun character from the original game. It's also nice that it will unlock the card games promised in the original, as it was really amateurish to have the "card game" option available to be selected, only to display a message saying it would be available in upcoming DLC. I'll definitely be grabbing this on Wednesday.

I gotta wait another day just because I have a PS3? Bah!

Seriously though, this will be the first DLC I will get. The costumes don't appeal to me, and I just haven't gotten around to the other one cuz it's still pretty "meh" to me (though I'll probably still buy it). Yay for Frocobos and card games on eidolons!

Don't you see what they are trying to do with guys like you? Cutting out stuff from the original game, reducing it's content and now selling it seperatly. This isn't the only example of this behaviour, obviously.

I recall that in Dead Space there was even a "DLC" contained on the disk for which people just purchased a key to unlock it without knowing that they already have the content hidden on their retail DVD.

What I want to say is the following; buy DLCs - especially those who come out shortly after release - and more and more DLCs will be coming. Why shouldn't I - as a publisher - use the possibility to milk my customers if they are willing to pay me some bucks?

Of course it is hard to tell the difference between DLCs which were planned from the beginning on and were cut out of the game and those who offer nice content and features and got just coded after the game sold very well. But since this one comes out kinda quick after the release of the game, I am more than suspicious.

And yeah, I must admit I never bought any DLC at all.

Yeah, a lot of people like to complain about this. Your comment about "guys like you" is pretty pandering, though. In this case, however, you're clearly right, it's a cash grab with regards to the card games.

What I don't understand about this argument is how it is absolutely, assuredly, a bad precedent. One way or another, you are going to pay for this kind of content, either via microtransactions like these or via higher content prices on the retail copies to begin with - maybe not now, but over time.

All this is, is another way for users to extend their gameplay experience, and it's completely optional. If you don't want to partake, that's your right, and I see that you're exercising that right. However, that doesn't mean that anyone who actually wants this optional content is somehow ruining the gaming industry by deciding to buy it. One nice thing about games is that they're not one-size-fits-all. You can choose to enjoy them however you like, unlike, say, a movie. If you get enough enjoyment out of a game without buying the DLC, that's great. It doesn't mean that anyone who likes getting the DLC is doing it wrong.

When games, as a general practice, start making you pay for a game at retail and then pay again to finish the core gaming experience - say, you play to the final boss and then discover that you have to download that final boss for another five bucks - then I think you might have a good point. For now, though, it seems to me to be pretty alarmist.

More on topic, though: I don't yet have 13-2. I'm not finished with 13 yet. But the more I play 13, the more I love it, and I'm sure that I'll get 13-2 in the reasonably near future for that reason. However, this DLC so far doesn't seem like something I'll snap up, so while I'm not at all adverse to DLC in general, this stuff in particular hasn't given me a compelling reason to get it.

I disagree totally. As a business man I can tell you that every optimization will be used. If I can get any more money - speaking from the BM perspecive - I will take it. As long as people are going to pay for DLCs PLUS the game, I will take what I can get.

As long ppl will buy "my DLCs", I will continue to sell them and I won't decrease the price for the original game if ppl still continue to buy it as they did before.

The problem about the "optionallity" is if the content got cut out of the original game, so for the same price - speaking about the retail disk - I get less.
This way, even though the DLCs are themselves optional, I still get heavily influenced by them.

That's pretty much what I wanted to say, dude! The thing is - as I already mentioned - the gaming industry has already began using such practice as proven with the example of Dead Space.

One problem lies that it is - for the player at least - very hard to tell if the material got cut out of the original retail game or if it was coded later on.

Another point is - of course - that everyone is allowed to do what he wants to and I am not gt dictate anything to those people. They can make their own decisions and are mostlikely old enough to do so.

You're splitting hairs and I don't think that it does any good to follow down that train of thought. Personally, I enjoy DLC. I like the idea that games are becoming less of a start-to-end experience and can gradually be expanded upon. If another five dollars (if even that sometimes) will prompt me to replay a game that I'd otherwise likely leave on a shelf to collect dust, why not?

Granted that yes, it can be annoying when, like in the case of Mass Effect 3, the very same day the game is released, they're asking us to pay even more to have the special character and whatnot. Still, as has been pointed out, you don't have to opt into it and I don't at all feel cheated out of content for choosing to do so. They may be including the information on the disk, but I don't see that as very different from a lot of other unused material that ends up in game files that remain there, forgotten forever.

Like Josh said, they aren't at a point where they're preventing you from experiencing a completed game, or charging you in order to enable some key mechanic or whatnot.

Besides, you're forgetting that a lot of developers are using DLC as a means of deterring piracy and recouping losses on used game sales. Granted it isn't a foolproof plan and there are still plenty of people who steal both game and added content alike, but it's certainly a better option than more silly DRMs.

Meanwhile, back to the topic, I only just picked up a copy of XIII-2 today, and I've yet to even start looking through whatever might be availabe in terms of DLC. I'm not in any rush to pick this up, but maybe down the line I might change my mind. Anything to keep me busy until ME3, I suppose.

And if the files at the disc are already working but they removed them from the game to sell them seperatly?
