Caves of Narshe Forums > Chrono Trigger > What did YOU name your characters?

Posted by: Chell172 8th October 2011 22:32
My first playthrough, I kept them original. But after my second time through, I had...

Crono: Hameh (KAMEHAMEHA)
Marle: L-las (Legolas)
Lucca: Dwarf (Luca/Lucca)
Frog: Trtle
Robo: Droid
Ayla: Krug
Magus: Janus

What did you name YOUR characters?

Or, if the limit on letters was 6, you can do that.

^ Quick question: What did you name the Epoch?

Posted by: ILoveMoombas! 9th October 2011 00:24
I always stick with the default names, myself.
Same with all the other games that let you change the names.

Posted by: No-Name 9th October 2011 02:10
I can't remember what I named them when I first played it. Recently I played it again and kept the names the same, because they just fit so well. I did however name the Epoch. Which of course was Tardis.

Oh crop, I forgot that one. I believe I named it Bessi, because it looks like a cow to me once you get the wings on it, and I believe Robo says "Heifer engines engaged!" at one point... I forget how to make him say it, though.

Even my first time playing through, I knew the storyline after watching an older sibling play. I kept everyone the same except:
Frog - Glenn
Robo - R-66Y
Magus - Janus

I felt like these were their actual names, so they deserved a bit of honor. I also named the Epoch, Falco, but that was just because at the time I didn't know what Epoch meant (I was 7)

^ After Falco Lombardi of Star Fox?

Posted by: RelmArrowney 13th October 2011 02:02
Everyone was called something that wasn't their "name" in the game, it seemed like, so I thought it clever to call them their original names.

Iscariot and I are alike! Lol.

Crono= Brono last time I played, thought that was funny at the time.
Lucca always turned to Lucy, not sure why.
Marle=Nadia
Magus=Janus
Robo= R-66Y, made me lauch 'cause when Marle meets him and finds that's his name, she she doesn't like it, and renames him, and whatever the name is, she goes, "____, that's perfect!" And I just thought it was funny to make her contradict herself.
Frog= Glen, or Toad once.
Ayla is a pretty name, so I kept it.

I've played this game way to many times to say exactly what I named my people everytime. The ones I best remember are changing Magus frog, in fact by impulse was gonna type Glenn, and robo to their storyline name. Other than that I put crono once as pdaddy Marle as whore1 and lucca as whore2 I think I made Ayla slutbg or something. I did that years ago though. That's about 50 completions ago. Not including before that.

I usually name the characters after close friends of mine. Except for Lucca, I almost always name her Bulma, because of her likeness to said character. Lately I've been naming Robo, Bender. This is because of my fondness for Futurama. Also, I'm in a serious relationship, and for whatever reason she likes it when I name the main female after her.

For some reason I always call the epoch my initials followed by year of birth. Thus, it became known as the SSM1989, I thought it sounded like a fitting name for the epoch.

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 12th December 2011 16:31
I would have thought Marle looks a bit more like Bulma.

And are you playing the DS version? The SNES version doesn't let you use more than 5 characters for any name, including the Epoch.

Oh yeah, I was playing the Virtual Console version when I wrote this.

Nah, I'm talking Freeza saga Bulma. I could see younger Bulma looking more like Marle, but beyond that, I'd definitely say Lucca.

I'm also talking about the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger. I was never fortunate enough to play the SNES version, though I did know of it.

Hats are being tipped to all those people who named Robo "Bender" (or "Bendr").

Posted by: Gigantuar 17th December 2011 18:10
I almost always name Frog and Robo after myself and a good friend respectively, and I alternate with friends names and default ones for the others.

Posted by: BlitzSage 19th December 2011 23:02
The only name I changed was the Epoch. I named it Aura.

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 20th December 2011 20:28
Why Aura? Just curious, since the Aura in my head right now is the .hack// character and I'm trying to figure out how she might fit the Epoch.

Posted by: Gigantuar 21st December 2011 16:55
IIRC last time I named the Epoch Beel after Bill from L4D. I found it "fitting" as bil means car in Swedish.

Posted by: TrueBOSS 26th December 2011 10:58
I've changed marle's, Magus's, and Frog's to their originals for previously said reasons. And I HAVE changed Robo's name to Bendr before also for my love of Futurama. Other than that I once changed Crono's name to F%^%r because my friend wanted to see if some funny dialog situations would come up. I don't remember the outcome but I remember getting a couple quick laughs out of it thoughout the game.

Crono: Zero
Robo: Cecil
Epoch: Slain
Left everyone else the same, dunno why I named Robo Cecil.

Posted by: Allen Hunter 7th January 2012 20:26
I keep everyone's names the same as their defaults most of the time. Although one time I did rename Frog as "Glen" and Robo as "R-66Y."

Perhaps next time I'll start referring them to certain Dragon Ball characters.

Here is an interesting video that compares certain Chrono Trigger characters to certain Dragon Ball characters. It's in Spanish, though.

A string of juvenile expletives. "Trynabefunny" is just that, with limited success. - R51

This way, any combination of players that I used, it would always sound dirty.

Posted by: RavenLalonde 29th September 2013 00:43
Crono - Nina (my nickname)
Lucca - Emily (a German name meaning "industrious")
Marle - Sarah (Hebrew for "princess"; also my mother's name)
Ayla - Rayna (a Scandinavian name meaning "mighty"; at a stretch, it could be considered short for "Regina", which is Latin for "queen")
Epoch - Ervos (because it sounds awesome)

Another time I named Lucca "Raven" after my favorite character from Teen Titans who happens to have purple hair, and Nadia "Hanna" after myself.

How did you give someone a 6-letter name?

Posted by: Aquova 13th October 2017 03:13
My first time through, I kept their default names, like I typically do in RPGs.

When I do multiple playthroughs I change their names to their "real" names:
Magus -> Janus
Marle -> Nadia
Robo -> R-66Y
Frog -> Glenn

I've also always kept the Epoch the same, mostly because I couldn't think of anything clever with 5 characters

Posted by: Glenn Magus Harvey 17th October 2017 07:05
Are there out-of-place quotes when you give them their original names?

Quote (Aquova @ 12th October 2017 22:13)

Era? Eon?

Posted by: Kitt 22nd October 2017 05:57
One time when I was bored with the default names, and even using the 'correct' names had become droll, I decided to name everyone in honor of Transformers (I was a huge Gen 1 fan). Thus --

Crono = Orion (Pax)
Frog = Alpha (Trion)
Robo = (Optimus) Prime
Marle = Ariel
Lucca = Gears (Wheeljack would have been better for the tinkerer, but it was too long)
Magus = stayed Magus because at the time I didn't like him much
Epoch = Ark
Ayla = (Grim)Lock (for the way she spoke as it reminded me of Grimlock)

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
On another play-through, because there is a scene about halfway through the game where Marle is trying to wake Crono up, and she says his name over and over and over again enough to fill an entire dialog screen, I named Crono the term for a breeding female dog. It's the word that is often used as a rude insult for a woman. Which made the scene so much funnier as that is exactly what Marle is doing at that point, trying to rouse Crono.
