I've been grinding for CP on the Archylte Steppes, fighting Flans and Gorgonopsids. While fighting the flans, I've had one attempt to merge with my leader and cause instant death. This has happened three times now.

I can't find any info on it, why it happened or what causes it.

Has anybody else had this happen to them?

This sounds like a glitch to me, the Flans sometimes merge with each other to make a bigger monster but I've never seen them attempt to merge with a character.
Is the game disk scratched?

Nope, disc is pristine.

I dunno, maybe? It happened two times in a row, so I'm not %100 on the glitch idea.

...And it happened again, fortunately not to my team leader this time.

Seeing now what happens after surviving such a move, the flan acts like it merged with another and morphs into a dire flan.

It also removed said party member from battle entirely.

That is really bizarre, I've never heard of anything like this happening before.
I hope you can find a solution.

It's been a while since I played FF13, what hp % does the flan merge?

Normally, at some point past half health.

Some of the times that this happens, however, they merge with a party member at full HP.

It's pretty hard to believe that this game has been out nearly two years here in the States and I'm the only one who's had this problem. It's not a game-breaking one, but a problem nonetheless.

This is a launch copy for the PS3, I dunno if that makes any difference.

I think we need to investigate whether or not this is a bug. I played the Xbox360 version and I never had this problem.

I think the best solution here is use the best strategy for a quick kill. Using Fang, Hope and Sazh would work best here. Have Fang debuff, Sazh buff and Hope heal, as I believe that attacking a flan will trigger the merge. Then have Hope build up the stagger gauge as Fang and Sazh attack.

If you already tried this, I apologise. Also good luck with the grinding.

I have the PS3 version and this hasn't happened. Does this occur in one area or more? If it is one specific area, then the problem is extremely minor. If not, then it is much more of a problem. IMO, the best bet would be to just avoid flan-rich areas for grinding, but that really depends on how far you are in pulse.

I'm strong enough now (current grinding session FINALLY complete, gametime + 40-50 hours) that I can kill Flans in a matter of seconds, so this isn't too big of a deal anymore, unless stronger Flan variants also have this ability.

I've easily killed 2000+ of these things, and this has happened fewer than 10 times.

The point isn't that they're too strong or anything, simply that it's happened at all. The more I think on it, the more it seems like an AI bug that the programmers simply overlooked (I mean, look at the odds above). I still find it incredibly difficult to believe I'm the only one this has happened to, but then, maybe other people haven't been grinding on Flans.

Yes, I know they're not the recommended grindstones, but I have a policy (mostly for FF games) that I power up as much as possible as soon as possible. And yes, this does tend to make the games (FFV and FFXIII especially) SO much longer. But hey, it pays off when the superbosses aren't 'SNK Boss hard' anymore (challenge is good, though).
