Haha, got so absorbed in ME3 that, among other things, I forgot to mention here that I was playing it at the moment. Wonderful game
Possible spoilers: highlight to view .if you don't consider the current deflating, plothole-riddled ending Regardless, I think I'm gonna go ahead and continue where I left off in my last ME2 playthrough. -------------------- |

Weird coincidence: in the middle of three science-fiction RPGs. Mass Effect 3 on PS3, Star Ocean: Second Evolution on PSP, and Anachronox on PC. Love ME3 so far. Star Ocean 2 is okay but maybe not spectacular. Anachronox is a slow starter, but I know it gets awesome later.

Anachronox is only six bucks on GOG. That cheaper than a burger and fries somewhere decent. Worth that much and more. I played most of it waaay back in high school on a friend's machine and I'm looking forward to doing a full playthrough on my own terms.

Just finished Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 3 for DS
Thinking about starting 3/6 again for GBA, I haven't played it with the extras they put in it. (New Espers/Dungeon) Then maybe Chrono Cross or Legend of Dragoon. |

The only game anyone should be playing is Mass Effect 3. Though I did...
Possible spoilers: highlight to view have to restart because the whole War Assets thing. I was just doing the priority quests. Even with that, the game's worth it. -------------------- |

For some reason, for some time in the past I confused it and Septerra Core. And I also confused Avernum with Arcanum. Speaking of that, I picked up Septerra Core from GOG for $2.99 during the winter sale. Maybe I'll do the same for Anachronox. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. Beat Mass Effect 3 a few nights ago. Total playtime was about 27 or 28 hours and I really enjoyed it. Beat Journey five minutes ago. Total playtime was about 110 minutes. It... was somehow every bit as satisfying as Mass Effect 3.
Next I'll finally continue with Wind Waker, with a little Anachronox on the side. Good times. Ain't we lucky we got 'em. -------------------- |

It's $15 on PSN only. thatgamecompany had a three-game deal with Sony (ended up being Flow, Flower, and now Journey), so they'll probably iron out a new deal with someone or go multiplatform for their next game. Journey has a gorgeous, almost Impressionist art style with flowing capes and ribbons flying around like kites and desert sand shining like gold dust. Journey's action mechanics are simplistic and the difficulty isn't high, but each segment of the game created a specific mood and atmosphere that resonated with me. Co-op is really great, almost emotionally affecting. When I lost track of a partner that fell behind, I ended up running around looking for him and calling out for five or ten minutes before deciding to move on. It's like that. -------------------- |

Dunno 'bout Laszlow, but as far as I'm concerned, what we get kinda fails as a proper ending at least partly cuz it has no real closure (like, what happened to everyone after the climax?), just leaves us with a lot of questions. This is probably better elaborated in the Mass Effect 3 thread, though. Despite the ending (and partly because there's apparently DLC coming to address it), I've started a new game in ME3 with a different Shep imported. Again, ME3 is an otherwise fun ride . -------------------- |

The ending was... weird, but it definitely had impact. It isn't my favorite ending in RPG history, not by a long shot, and I was a little miffed at the lack of a real final boss, but I'll be damned if I didn't spend twenty minutes deciding whether to walk through door A, B, or C. I'm 100% okay with the nature and gravity of the big decision, but I'm not 100% okay with it's blunt nature and execution.
Oh, and I'm early on in Wind Waker, but I kinda want to replay Journey. Might use a guide so I make sure to get all of the hidden things and a few extra trophies. Still have games of Anachronox, Star Ocean II, and Sword & Sworcery EP on the side. -------------------- |

Yeah, there are parts of it I don't mind, but I agree with both of you: it was weird, and it barely even felt like an ending.
But, with that being said, I don't think that the hallmark of the ME Trilogy has been its endings. I didn't like ME1 and 2's endings, at least from a storytelling perspective. And this one almost made it seem like they ran out of money or time, and had to release it. But otherwise, the Mass Effect 3 was nearly perfect. Back on topic though. After putting the Mass Effect games behind (for now, at least), I thought about it for quite some time, and I think that, instead of going through Arkham Asylum, I'm gonna finally go through Bioshock, since I have an XBox now that finally lets me save. But right now, I'm absorbed in ME3's multiplayer. I think it was actually well done. -------------------- |

It's been really difficult for me to game the last couple weeks, but I've been piddling around doing Marks in Final Fantasy XIII to level up a bit so I can go for a few more achievements before I put it away. Then I really want to finish my ME2 playthrough that I've barely started. After that, I don't know - I have five 360 games that I own but haven't even played yet, including XIII-2.

I played through Journey and had a very moving and emotional experience as a result. Now I guess I'm back to War of the Lions, hating my completionist self for wanting to learn Ultima.

I think BioWare was trying for an open-ended conclusion to Mass Effect 3, to let gamers decide for themselves what happens afterwards. ME3 is a spectacular game, and while I didn't think the ending was bad, I just found it underwhelming for a series like Mass Effect and springing up a lot of unanswered and confusing questions. If they do decide to change the ending, I'm hoping for less of a complete overhaul and more of an expansion and clarification on the endings.
On the subject of which game I'm playing now, I've started on Mother 3. Two chapters in and I'm already completely in love with the battle system and the quirkness of Mother 3's universe, though Lord Passion is pretty frustrating. The game certainly lives up to its slogan: "Strange. Funny. Heartrending." -------------------- Thank you for taking the time to read this sign. This sign loves you. |

Playing Summon Night: Swordcraft Story. As Pratty. I rolled up Sugar as my guardian beast. NOT picking her for any of the conversation scenes again. Well, if I do, I'm getting a "one-sided lesbian love story" (as a friend on IJBM puts it) from her, though Pratty's reactions to it are rather hilarious.
My favorite character so far is Sanary, actually. But Pratty is also awesome. Also playing Faerie Solitaire since getting that in the Epic SteamGifts Faerie Solitaire giveaway. It's nice for passing time. Just beat Portal the other day. Quite an enjoyable little 3D puzzle platformer, with a surprising amount of plot and well-written darkly-humorous script. GLaDOS confirmed to be lying bastard. Did you know that a delicious and moist black forest cake contains fish-shaped ethyl benzene and 3 tablespoons of rhubarb, on fire? Still playing Wind Waker, Star Ocean 2, and Sword & Sworcery. I've hit snags in the latter two, but I'm enjoying Wind Waker so much that I sort of want to revisit Phantom Hourglass. That's probably a sign of me finally losing my mind.

Just started playing Avadon: the Black Fortress after getting it on Humble Bundle. This is probably my first traditional-styled western RPG. (I've played Deus Ex very briefly before this, and I've also played Nethack but that's a roguelike and not really a WRPG. I've also played in multiple D&D campaigns...but that's a different ballgame altogether.)
1. Are western RPGs usually this slow in their action? 2. I'm really not supposed to keep the vast majority of the random shit I find in the dungeon, am I? -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. I've played Avadon - it's an indie game from an indie RPG legend of sorts.
1. Mostly yes, at least ones made in the middle 90s. That's what Avadon feels like - a turn-based western 90s RPG. Western RPGs got faster with the advent of superior action-oriented games like Diablo II and Baldur's Gate. 2. No, you really aren't. That's why Torchlight's mid-dungeon-loot-selling is one of the best things ever. EDIT: Oh, right. I'm playing a lot of Wind Waker. Locating map fish, hunting for treasure, the works. I recently completed the Earth Temple and I'm taking a break before challenging the Wind Temple by sailing the open seas and looking for treasure. I have two Triforce Charts, but not enough Rupees to translate them.... This post has been edited by laszlow on 15th April 2012 12:11 -------------------- |

Oh, I forgot about Torchlight. I played a bit of that a while ago, though isn't it closer to the dungeon crawler subgenre than the WRPG subgenre? In any case, I dropped it or put it on hold or whatever; I think I became really busy.
It IS rather difficult to find the time to sit down and really enjoy a game these days. Speaking of Torchlight, was it made by the same people who made Dungeon Defenders? Because the interface stylings (such as fonts) look awfully similar. Diablo basically took the Western RPG, borrowed a few concepts from Japanese roguelikes, and spun off into the modern action-dungeon-crawler-thingy. Nowadays those are considered Diablo clones, e.g. Torchlight or Titan Quest. I consider it a western RPG because it use one.
And the Torchlight devs have nothing to do with Dungeon Defenders. Before forming Runic Games their staff worked for Blizzard North and Flagship Studios, among others. The only game Runic has released thus far is Torchlight, which is a minor obsession of mine. EDIT: oh, right the topic. Well last night I did some more treasure hunting in Wind Waker. Now I have all four battles, a bunch of heart pieces and rupees, and a whopping five Triforce pieces. This game is great and I think I can finish it by the end of the week. Not quite playing, but purchasing.
Just bought the Indie Royale Spring Bundle. It contains these items: * Unstoppable Gorg (direct download, Desura, Steam) * Depths of Peril (direct download, Desura, Steam) * Tobe's Vertical Adventure (Steam, soundtrack) * Inferno+ (direct download, Desura, soundtrack) * Syldris (direct download, Desura, soundtrack) * Ballistic (direct download, Desura, soundtrack) * (music) Danimal Cannon - Roots (pay $5 to get this) I got this because I want TVA, though this isn't a completely rational purchase since I paid $5 for the bundle while TVA's base price is $4.99 on Steam. But whatever. Ballistic and Inferno+ are both two-stick shooters; Inferno+ says it's an RPG while Ballistic seems to be something along the lines of Geometry Wars / Grid Wars. Syldris is a tetris-like (but not tetris at all, mind you, just looks kinda like it) casual puzzle game. All these three are by the same developer. Unstoppable Gorg is a retro-sci-fi-styled tower defence game. Depths of Peril seems to be an RPG/strategy game in a standard fantasy setting. Tobe's Vertical Adventure is a platformer. I'm right at the end of the ridiculous xp grind for platinum on FEAR 2 50k xp to go then i'm done with this game until I play the DLC.
I beat Mass Effect 3. Didn't really understand why the ending was so bad. I liked it. All i could think about though after it was, "Well if this is terrible then i wonder what people nowadays would think about the ending of Final Fantasy VII." I know a few years (yeah years) later they gave us Advent Children but until then that's the worst ending in my mind. Still needing to beat Mass Effect 3 on insane though and Duke Nukem forever on Damn I'm Good My COD friend wants to play CoD Black Ops again with me so I'm probably playing that most of the next month that i'm not working. -------------------- He's Back. All i could think about though after it was, "Well if this is terrible then i wonder what people nowadays would think about the ending of Final Fantasy VII." I don't think the endings of the two can be compared. I can barely count the differences, but what it comes down to is FFVII's ending has a clear outcome directly resulting from the climax of the game Possible spoilers: highlight to view And it makes sense! We also know what happens to the cast right after the climax. With ME3, the climax isn't necessarily even resolved. With that, the ending is too muddled by theories, questions, and plot holes galore to give us the kind of closure FFVII did; it just comes off as badly written. I suppose it's a matter of opinion, though, since a lot of people think that ME3's current ending is fine. I just disagree .(namely, the world is saved, heals, and moves on). But whatev, I happened to get my digital copy of Fallout when it was offered for free. Gosh, it's so outdated compared to what I'm now used to, but I'm still enjoying it. It's a pleasant surprise. And between sessions of that? Oh yeah, Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike . This post has been edited by Galsic on 23rd April 2012 22:13 -------------------- |

The last scenes show Red XIII and several pups, leaving the question of where those pups came from and what kind of aftermath resulted from the end of the game. The ending to ME3 also raises a lot of questions as well, and I do think that it was intended to a degree that players would make their own interpretations on how the aftermath would unfold. -------------------- Thank you for taking the time to read this sign.
