I think I've tried the final battle about 20 times and failed to beat the first stage of Orphan every single time.

I'm ok in consumate light, but whenever he switches to darkness he is able to inflict a status that prevents my characters from taking any sort of action whatsoever. Then he gradually whittles down my characters' health until Lightning is dead. Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid this?

I didn't really mind this game until I got to the final boss, but now I think I may be beginning to hate it. dry.gif

My party for the last two battles was Vanille, Lightning and Hope. I suggest you switch Vanille in as your leader, and have her cast Poison on Orphan. This makes your job so much easier.

Then, when ever he uses Merciless Judgement, switch to a Paradigm with two or more medics and HEAL. He starts the battle off with MJ, so I suggest starting off with MED/MED/SYN.

Okay, you've got poison on him? Good. Switch to COM/RAV/RAV or COM/RAV/MED and attack. If Poison wears off, recast it. Poison is essential to this fight, really.

Oh, and when you've got statuses, switch to MED/MED/COM or MED/MED/MED.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

i had Lightning, Snow, and Hope. I basically had COM/RAV/RAV to amp up him chain gauge, SAB/SEN/SYN to buff up my party and debuff him at the beginning, MED/SEN/MED to heal up. Keep buffs on the party, heal as soon as humanly possible, and try synthesis groups (like the insta-stagger one. to get this, equip someone with one of the weapons that has stagger lock as an ability, and then have them use a survivalists catalog/hunters friend/speed sash/energy sash. This will allow you to randomly boost an enemy to stagger. Its quite useful) just keep hacking away at him, you can also replace lightning with Fang, so you can use the SAB class on him. Once you get properly buffed and bestow orphan with a lot of debuffs, the battle's a cakewalk. just keep an eye on your health and use renew/summon if you get into trouble

This is rather embarrassing for me.

I do quite well with everything excepting when he renders all my characters entirely inactive. My characters are Sazh, Fang and Lightning, though I've also tried using Hope (with little improvement). In either case, I have two medics. If I get lucky enough to outlive the ailment, then my characters are in such a trashy position (and usually with so many negative status effects) that I am unable to recover before Orphan deals a big hit.

The official strategy guide suggests that I ignore the status ailments and keep attacking... unfortunately that's entirely out of the question, as my characters are completely uncontrollable due to said status effects.

I'm gonna give this thing a few more tries later this weekend. As of now, my level of frustration is a little bit too high to take another loss.

if you have dispelga, use that. thatll take away all status effects on everything. its good in a pinch

Yeah, it's still causing me trouble. In my last few attempts I've been able to survive his 'dark' side but I fail once I get to about 20-25% health left. By this time, in order to survive the status ailments, I have depleated all of my TP.

The most frustrating part about this is that I can't train to make my characters better, as I've already maxed out the crysterium in each of their three main classes. Fang has a strength stat of 2100, Lightning and Hope each have a magic stat of 1500. All characters have a max HP of about 8000.

Switch Vanille in and cast poison and recast it when it wears off. This way, he'll still be taking damage when you're getting things back together. I'm pretty sure you can buy an item that removes the status ailment that prevents action, though I forget which it is.

Alternatively, you could use accessories that reduce your likelihood of getting the status ailments in the first place. Don't feel bad about changing your party, I was nowhere near maxed and got five-stars. If you want to change your party after Barthandelus, just loose and retry, or pause, press select and retry.

My party for this battle was Vanille, Hope, and Fang.

Started off in Med/Med/Sen (Combat Clinic) to handle the initial attack, then switched to Sab/Syn/Sab to poison Orphan and let Hope buff the party a bit (Fang doesn't have poison, but having more than one Sab on the field helps increase the odds of ailments working thanks to the role bonus). Then I just camped in Combat Clinic and let poison do all the work. I had to reapply poison a few times, but I got a 3 star rating this way. Remember you can use items to heal status ailments, this leaves the Meds free to focus on restoring HP and gives your atb bar time to fill up. Oh, and it is also a good idea to have some death resistance items on the party leader.

Super late, of course, but I beat Orphan on my third try (would have been my second, but I accidentally went to the wrong Paradigm and couldn't get back in time).

My party was Light, Vanille, and Fang, with all three maxed out on the pre-endgame Crystarium for their original three roles, and with Light adding some SYN abilities and Fang adding RAV. I was able to roar through by starting with SYN/SAB/SAB to get Protect and Shell on my party Deprotect, Deshell, Poison, and Imperil, and then RAV/RAV/COM and RAV/RAV/RAV to stagger (mixing in MED/MED/SEN for quick heals). I had the Seraph Crown on Light but put mostly Bangles on the other two. I think my key was to get into Combat Clinic just before really needing it.

I guess I never followed up in here. Might as well, for the amusement of anyone who reads of my plight wink.gif

I ended up finally beating Orphan over Christmas break, on my 32th attempt (I know I've said a couple varying numbers in chat, but I actually just found the piece of paper I kept tally on). I've based a rough estimate on the source of these deaths:
25% - Lightning insta-death'd (while wearing two Cherub Crowns)
50% - Both characters capable of healing spells Stopped, party erodes to death
10% - Failed to sufficiently prepare for Merciless Judgment
5% - Random other sadness

So... yeah. I really have no idea why it was so difficult for me. It never took me more than two tries to beat any other boss in the game. At least the nightmare is behind me tongue.gif

Congratulations DeathPen, its always nice to remove a blight on one's record tongue.gif

just out of interest, had you used the weapon/item upgrade system much?
I seem to remember just going to level 10 with Lightning's default weapon (after arriving in pulse for the first time) used a very small portion of my loot, but increased her strength by 200. Seems a significant boost.
