For those whose memories are in need of refreshing, the Brave Blade decreases in strength the more you run from battles, while the Chicken Knife increases in strength. You can only get one of the two in any given playthough, unless you use a cheat or something to get the other one (which would be impractical anyway, since one is only super strong while the other is super weak).
I ALWAYS go with the Brave Blade. Yes, the Chicken Knife can only get stronger while the Brave Blade can only get weaker, but I don't want to spend lots of time in an already grind-heavy game running from battles just to power up one weapon. Besides, there are already twelve legendary weapons. ("Yes, the twelve legendary weapons. They are weapons. They are legendary. There are even twelve of them." Lampshade Hanging of Parrot Exposition at its finest. But I digress.) Not running from any battles is a nice self-imposed challenge anyway. I generally go with the Brave Blade because I don't run from battles. Also, I'm fairly lazy when it comes to FF5 and I like to just blaze through battles, so I don't choose much outside of Fight...and don't you auto-run from a battle if you try to do that with the Chicken Knife?

I feel that the Chicken Knife is better, but I've tried both. I don't run from battles that often in FF V, but the Chicken Knife has significantly better potential than other endgame knives while the Brave Blade is a few steps below comparable endgame swords. Really, though, the Brave Blade is a better option if you don't feel like grinding.

My first time through I got the Brave Blade. Since then it has been the Chicken Knife. It's just a better weapon imo, though you do have to run for it to get there.

Chicken Knife because I don't have to worry about how many times I fled combat, knife/higher agility pretty much increases attack power any ways.

I think when I first played the game I just couldn't choose so I didn't.
Does the Brave Blade count as a knife? If it doesn't, then wouldn't the Chicken Knife be more useful? You could give it's pretty respectable final attack power to a Mimic-class character. I always go for the Brave Blade. I only run from battles if I know I have absolutely 0% chance of winning, and that doesn't happen very often. The few times I have run from battle after getting the Brave Blade, I've never noticed a significant drop in its power. If I picked the Chicken Knife, it seems like it'd take a lot of grinding/running to power up.
By the way, do the Brave Blade or the Chicken Knife have to be equipped to somebody in the party in order for battles to affect their attack power, or is just having them in your inventory enough? This post has been edited by Psiren on 21st June 2011 18:55 |

You don't even need them in your inventory. I think lazlow put it pretty well.
There are a few battles where running is real nice; versus Jackanapes / Garkimasra (the Walse/Worus castle basement creature), or when escaping Karnak Castle when the time's limit hounding you. I want the option of running then, but I sure as hell won't run from 120-ish fights just to power up the blade, so I end up ignoring both. I do pick up the Brave Blade though, since its Battle Power will always be 128 for Goblin Punch purposes (the Chicken Knife will always remain at 0) so there's some niche use there for Freelancers or Knights with !Blue. Since the Brave Blade counts as a Knightsword (re: GMH) -------------------- |

Oh, the two weapons have attack stats of 128 and 0, and damage modifiers (a la the Excalipur) to make them decrease/increase with how much you run?

I go with the Chicken Knife. I tend to run from battle a lot when I'm impatient.

However, it may turn up useful for anyone attempting a Blue Mage SCC (especially the fact that it uses no MP whatsoever). This is interesting indeed. I may attempt a Blue Mage SCC. Is there a thread for this? I haven't played FFV in ages so I would like some advice on Blue Mages because it has been awhile. |

Goblin Punch is really useful for Mimes, since it allows you to use a basic attack AND keep your ability slots free without having to equip !Attack. (Although, for basic attacking purposes, Aim, Mug, Mineuchi, Open Fire, and Rapid Fire work just as well.) Also, what's SCC stand for? -------------------- |

Maybe the jap name for the Gladi's attack skill?
Meanwhile I tend to use the chicken knife. It doesn't take sooo long to power up, actually, and it can became with a max atk of 127 the strongest weapon in the game, including ragnarok and apocalypse. Bonus damage for agility stat. YOu don't trigger the flee option with X-Fight anyways. |

I go for the Chicken Knife, mostly because there are enough strong sword-type weapons in the game and very few classes can actually equip the Brave Blade [Freelancers can if you master enough Jobs to make them useful, but I prefer sticking with the other Jobs]. At the same time, having the Brave Blade's power drop even if you run from a battle to save your butt is annoying and the Auto-Run can be countered with commands like SwordSlap, Aim, Goblin Punch, etc. [making it a very good weapon for Blue Mages].

I guess you mean that Chicken's isn't as powerful as I said? Apart from the normal, atk power which is shown in the menu it deals bonus damage based on the agility of the user.
I hope I understood your posting correctly. |

Oh, it was just an aside about how the "chicken knife", what sounds like a silly weapon with a silly name, surprisingly turns out to be one of the strongest weapons, outclassing such things as the Apocalypse (sword, right?).
Hence it being an instance of a Lethal Joke Weapon. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. TMNT 3: Radical Rescue tabled: Lost Ruins |

I ended up picking the chicken knife... I tested out the brave blade first...
from the looks of it the chicken knife gains 1 atp for every 2 battles you run from... mine started at 22, so I guess I ran from 44 or 45 fights up until then. The brave blade was doing around 3200 damage... less than Excalibur. (Yeah... I forgot to pick them up before the Pyramids... didn't realize Mua/Moore was accessible by foot from the desert) |

I like the Brave Blade. Partly because it makes me feel more awesome, but primarily because I do not run from battles under any circumstances and the Brave Blade's maximum is higher than that of the Chicken Knife. The Chicken Knife would drive me crazy if I ever used it, because I would be in the middle of killing something when it just decides that what I really want to do is turn cucco and run off like a little girl.

I vote the chicken knife because:
A) More jobs can equip knives rather than swords I run away often C) Mimes can equip it -------------------- Excuse me? Would you mind not talking while I'm interupting? |
