Include what you'd consider holidays aswell... no travel snobbery here please

also, anyone ever tried hitchhiking?

I'm psyching myself up to go around Europe this year, it'll be a big personal victory, I guess.

Nowhere super exciting yet, really. I've been all over Ontario and such.

I'd say my most exciting times have been my visit to Walt Disney World in Florida, and my moving to Vancouver, B.C. Not really a trip the latter, but the past year and a half have been fun for exploring this awesome city, and there's only more to come. Cuba was okay... but beaching it up on a resort isn't the most exciting time.

I really want to get to Europe as well as Asia. I've heard wondrous things about Thailand, for example. Also want to make it to New Zealand some day. There're also some islands in Spain, called the Canary Islands or somesuch which look gorgeous. I just want to go there, cause it looks amazing.

Anyways, hope you get yourself to Europe!

My most exciting travels have been to Ukraine, India, and London.

My sister was in the Peace Corps, stationed in Ukraine, so we went to visit her in the summer of 2005. It was a really interesting trip as we got to see three very different sides of the country - we started in the very industrial city of Kyiv (Kiev) and were there for about a week. After that, we took an overnight train to the small, rural village where my sister was stationed, called Hlobyne. We stayed with her host family for a few days and got to experience how they lived and see a ton of the small town. It was definitely my favorite of the three places we stayed. After that, we went to Yalta and saw the very resorty side of the country, set along the Black Sea. It was a blast and I'm glad I was fortunate enough to go on the trip.

India and London were connected - I was in India for a week for work, spending a few days each in Mumbai and Delhi. I enjoyed both cities - my boss and I went to a lot more sights in Mumbai, including a few temples and the Gateway to Mumbai. In Delhi, we didn't have as many opportunities for such sightseeing, but we did go to a really awesome sprawling market where I was able to barter for some knickknacks to bring back to the states.

As my boss was staying in India for an extra week and our other travel companions were continuing on to the Philippines, my travel plans back home were mine alone, and I managed to finagle a day-long layover in London to explore the city on my own. When I got in, I took the tube in to the middle of the city, literally turned around in a circle with my arm out and then just walked in the direction I was pointing. I loved the city, and met up with CoNsters Tiddles and Mimic while I was there. Good times were had by all.

I haven't traveled nearly as much as I'd like and I really ought to fix that. I've been all over Canada one way or another. Flown across the country to visit family, traveled across a good chunk of it in a van with friends when I was lucky enough to be in a touring band. Likewise, got to see a few interesting places in the USA, from New York down to Washington. Not really a big deal to Americans, but was neat for me!

Still, the most exciting place I ever got to visit was a trip to Italy. Got to see some of the more rural areas of Campobasso, which is where my mother's side of the family come from. Gorgeous place. Got to spend a bit of time doing the tourist thing in Milan for a few days, saw a few historical sights, did a ton of shopping.

I'm also in the boat of people who want to see most of the European countries, as well as a bunch of other places here and there.

Most of my travel in the last few years has been tied to the many number of times I moved around; for instance, I'd never been to New York City or Boston, or even Kansas City except for driving through, until I was planning to move to each place in 2004, 2007, or 2010 respectively and had to go visit to see the lay of the land and places to live in each.

I've only left North America once, and that was almost three years ago when my wife and I took a six-years-too-late honeymoon to the Republic of Ireland. We spent nine days there, spending a few in Dublin and then the rest on a self-guided driving tour down the coasts and around, staying in bed and breakfasts each night on the road and hitting a lot of the tourist high points, like kissing the Blarney Stone, visiting the Rock of Cashel, and hoisting pints in a hole-in-the-wall pub while watching a Liverpool match. That trip was one of the high points in my life thus far, for sure. I took about 900 photos there over the course of the trip, most of them are on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.7...=3&l=a866042d82 and http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.7...=3&l=d47d43ad56 for a start)

Beyond that, I've traveled quite a bit inside the United States, mostly, though not nearly as much since university. When I was much younger, my parents thought it was really important that I get to see lots of things, and as such we tended to take one, sometimes even two road trips a year. They would often be down to Florida, where my brother and sister live, so I've seen a lot of the big attractions down that way - Disney, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, St. Augustine, Cape Canaveral, Rainbow River, etc. We also went out to Colorado quite a bit, where my aunt owns a horse ranch at the Royal Gorge, and in one of those trips we also looped around to see Yellowstone, and then the Badlands and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota before crossing the Mississippi during the flood of '93.

Another one of those road trips went north, and took us through Toronto (where we stayed at the Skydome hotel and watched both a baseball game and a Canadian football game) and Montreal, then back down through upstate New York and back home to Illinois. I remember that trip specifically because I got to go to the hall of fame of three different sports: hockey (Toronto), baseball (Cooperstown, NY) and soccer (Onenota, NY).

We did a few one-off trips too, of which I specifically remember spending a few days in the Washington DC metro, and hitting most of the big sights there.

Once I got older and met my wife, we did a few trips together as well when money allowed. We usually would do spring break from university down at my sister's house, or her great-aunt's house, both of which were within 20 minutes of each other in Florida. We also have gone to Las Vegas twice together, once in 2002 and again in 2010, and once on a trip out to Los Angeles when we were considering moving there to try to find work (hint - don't go to LA. It's a terrible, awful place).

Now that we've got the baby, we're planning in a very different way. We're thinking about doing a road trip with my parents out to Colorado this spring so that my aunt can meet her great-niece, and we're planning also to get the baby to Boston so our Boston friends can meet her as well. Down the road, we're already kind of thinking about the ubiquitous Disney trip, either to Disney World, or on a Disney cruise, or both, so we can all three do something fun. We really want to find a way to go international again sometime soon, though, with England and Italy being highest on our lists at the moment (though we'd settle for Ireland again in a heartbeat).

About 15 years ago, I went to Mexico with my family, but that ended up being quite boring because I was old enough to not want to hang out with my parents but too young for my older siblings to want to take me out with them. [Although, considering that they ended the night witnessing drunken gunfire, threats, and crashed cars, I'm okay with having missed it.]

I spent last semester in South Korea, but as I was attending university, I didn't do much sightseeing. That said, it was my third time going to Korea, so I've seen a fair bit of it, from Jeju-do to Haeundae to Kyeongju to the sites of Seoul. I even did a temple stay and woke up with the monks. [I highly recommend doing so.]

I'd love to do more traveling. I definitely want to make it across the pond--and not simply because I'd like to understand everything people are saying to me (slang can be picked up quickly enough, I figure). And then head to the continent for Spain and France--and Greece. I'd also like to see Japan at some point, but we'll see how things go.

Am I the only one already living in continental Europe here? tongue.gif

Best places I've travelled too are London and Italy (most of the time I've been to Rome, but also some smaller cities in central Italy), but as I've been to both places several times I really can't pick a favourite occasion. I've never been outside of Europe so I'd be very interested in visiting the US some day, or maybe even Japan just too feast on nerdy stuff.

Ahh no hitchhikers then!
Anyone tried the website - couchsurfing?
^ yes, bit of a low budget theme there..

happy.gif Well thanks for the awesome response guys..

I've been all over the UK on account of living here.. except only a couple days in Wales.. been to mainland Europe quite a bit with family when growing up...My mother has an uncommon love of France. Never been out of the country for more than 3 weeks though, which is strange when considering the amount of daydreaming I get up to..
I Really want to see the real USA; going to the themeparks of Florida, age 11, just won't cut it tongue.gif Fortunately I've met a bunch of Americans from all over while spending some time in London recently, So I'll have people to visit when I eventually get out there..

Gotta say the most interesting trips I've had were the 10 days I spent in Morrocco with school.. bloody incredible, Lithuania was pretty cool, meeting some of my distant relatives in Italy was a real eye-opener too =]

..Now I've said all that I realise I've a lot to be grateful for.

I spent three weeks in Europe earlier this summer on a tour with the university choir I'm in, and since getting back I've been meaning to start this thread. Obviously, members are from all over the place, but I think that shouldn't affect our ability to share some the best destinations we've visited, either nearby or far away from wherever you happen to be from.

I don't really think there's a lot of tourist-specific places to visit here in the midwest. There's a lot of lovely nature in the northern states, and a lot of lovely flatness in the more middle states, but I wouldn't exactly call it touristy. To be fair, the upper Mississippi is awesome in summer; plenty of boating and swimming and such, and the water isn't even brown this far up river.

I think that of all the places I went in Europe, my favorite was Rome. It was cool to see all the history there. As someone taking Latin, I thought it was fun to see the ruins of Rome and all the monuments written in Latin; as someone who's Catholic, I got a kick out of seeing the massive churches. Renaissance papacy = totally worthwhile. Paris was fun to see too, but I definitely perfered Rome.

I also really loved Switzerland. The alps, the lakes, everything about the nature was just beautiful, and Zurich was extremely well-kept in the middle of it all. It seemed a bit quieter there in general, which was a nice break from some of the more bustling locations we visited.

I'm incredibly excited right now, because I recently was accepted to study a year at Trinity College, Dublin. I really enjoyed my time in Ireland this past summer, so it'll be great to return, especially since Trinity has such a fantastic location in the city. Of course, it'll also allow me the chance to see other places I haven't yet been to as well.

I'm going to necro this thread while I'm here too! I've moved twice more since my last post in this thread four years ago, first back to Boston and then to Louisiana.

I've also been fortunate to travel outside the States some more, as well, as my wife is now working on a project that allows her to do conferences overseas a couple times a year. In the last two years, I've been able to go with her to Jordan, Morocco, and Malaysia, with a bonus day in Lisbon, Portugal for a brief stop in the land of my ancestors. Next year, I'm hearing we'll get to do a few days in Borneo, which is not going to break my heart at all.

Here's a sample of the hundreds of photos I've been able to take on these trips, this one from Casablanca in Morocco:
