What's everyone's thoughts on RPG versions of games that are released as sidescrollers, FPS's, RTS's, etc. (A real world example of course being Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)

I would love to see a Kirby RPG. The universe, Kirby's skillset, enemies and allies all lend themselves to being made into an RPG. Especially MetaKnight.

Thoughts?

Also what do you think would be a good RPG?

I'm not sure if this exactly falls under the same category, but one of the first RPGs I ever played was actually Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. The battle system is more or less a copy of FFX, and the characters are not from the actual story, but are new characters that follow a similar distribution of backgrounds / fighting types to that of Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, etc. Your party ends up 'cleaning up' a lot of the stuff that happens either immediately after an event treated in the main story or other aspects of that event that happen outside the main story's scope.

The game wasn't great. It is kinda neat, though, because you get to play through the events in a new way with a new party, And, while a lot of the battle system felt like it was lifted straight out of FFX, I have no complaints. It was an ok experience, mostly worthwhile for the new (RPG) take on an old franchise story, but as a result I found it to be lacking in other aspects, due to the fact that the background material wasn't set up ideally for an RPG.

Huh, so we come up with our own imaginary RPGs based on other franchises, kind of like Mega Man X: Command Mission, Sonic: Dark Brotherhood, or Super Mario RPG? Sure, okay.

For the record, I'd play the hell out of a traditional Disgaea RPG. Yes, I know the series is already a strategy RPG, but it's one of the most vibrant, insane game universes, it's full of entertaining characters and great storylines, and attacks are already over-the-top and crazy. I'd love a different flavor of Disgaea RPG. What can I say? I'm a fanboy.

Obviously World of Warcraft comes to mind in terms of games that have already been converted to RPG style, and they hit that one out of the park. But they were smart about it, it seemed to me that a few years before they made it they decided to make Warcraft 3 as sort of a transitional RTS that has RPG elements (and to introduce major stories and characters) in order to get ready.

So to convert a game successfully into an RPG would for me mean lots of characters necessary and a memorable villain. So for my money...I would play a Mega Man RPG (although I guess its been done?) Or Starcraft.

A megaman RPG as evil eye said I guess its been done but idk. Maybe a Batman or (Better yet) a superman RPG would be a curious venture. For the latter it couldn't do more harm then good on his gaming reputation. Someone in a previous post said a Kirby RPG and i agree that that would be fun to see or maybe a Legend of Zelda RPG could be good too (I'm not counting the second LoZ game as a RPG in this case)
Idk if this is off topic or not but has anyone ever played the first Digimon World game? I'd have loved if they made another game like that one. The second on where nothing like the first one and I'd love to see another Digimon World game like the original.
Last but not least, has anyone played the tales of the World games? Which is a ligit crossover game for most of the big name tales characters? If you have, I'd like to see how squeenix would do if they tried this with their Final Fantasy games.

Re Mega Man RPG:

Well, there have been the Battle Network series (which is more like a collectibles- and action-RPG than a traditional JRPG (or even WRPG)) and Mega Man X Command Mission (which I don't know anything about). As well as a couple of Newgrounds flash games called "Mega Man RPG" that use the RPG name merely because they have turn-based battles.

Fairy Fencer F ADF
Pokémon Perfect Crystal

finished so far this year:

You're forgetting Mega Man Legends and Mega Man Legends 2, on the PSX. Both excellent games with great stories/characters and a very well-done, real-time action-RPG battle system.

no, i remembered them, just wasn't sure if they counted as the RPG's we're talking about. Still play the first one. I never managed to track down the second one though. I heard it ended with a cliff hanger though and Capcom is consistently screwing it's fans with the 3rd so I'm scared to play it.

I have the second one (hard copy, yes) and a PS1. But I still haven't finished the first one so I haven't gotten around to playing MML2.

I'm not sure the MML games are RPGs, either. They just seem like 3D action games to me. Maybe I haven't played far enough.
