... coming soon to your theater.

I'm gonna be in New York next Wednesday, until the 22nd (can't believe how fast the time went by since we booked our tickets).

We're staying for quite a bit of time considering, so we'll have time to do all the big time tourist stuff and visits. I was just wondering if any of you guys had some ideas on what we could do and check out as well.

Josh, since you and I share a common beer interest, I thought you might have a couple of adresses to go to, or beer names to try out while I'm in the U.S.

As far as sports go, we're going to see the Yankees v Braves monday night game, about the only sport we could go to during that time. If anyone living in NY want to join us and explain to my girlfriend how it's played I'd be grateful, she seems impervious to my explanations happy.gif

I'l try and pass by the chat the next couple of nights after work as well, and see if you guys might have other ideas as well.

En avant les Bleus !!

I assume by New York you mean New York City.

Well, you definitely should check out Battery Park, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty, as well as the 9/11 Ground Zero site though I don't think there's that much to see there. (Wait a few more years; after 1 WTC is completed they'll probably start setting up a memorial museum.) And of course there's Times Square (which I absolutely hated walking through when I was interning in the city.)

There are also multiple Chinatowns spread between different boroughs. The oldest one is in southern Manhattan, while the newest and biggest one is over in Flushing in northern Queens. There are five in all, another one's in Bensonhurst in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, I didn't really do much in the way of checking out tourist attractions during the year I was in NYC.

Unfortunately, New York Red Bull are away to Chicago while you're in the country, or I would suggest you go to that so you could see some American soccer. smile.gif

I'm sure you already know of the biggest tourist stuff as you implied in your post; I'll avoid rehashing too much of it. I would suggest checking out The Cloisters if the weather's nice and you want something outdoors to do - it's up towards the northernmost part of Manhattan (might even be across the border into the Bronx, I don't remember), and it's part of the Met. Has lovely landscaped grounds all around it.

The most local brews are from the Brooklyn Brewery. I wouldn't expect to be amazed, but when in Rome, you should at least try the local beer, right? Yuengling's not from New York, but I always associate their beer with New York because it's where I first tried it. They're "America's oldest brewery," and a lot of their beers will be available on tap at a lot of different pubs all around New York. I really didn't drink in the city all that much, since I lived in the suburbs, but I do suggest that you have a meal at Mama Mexico. They have two locations in the city, but I suggest the one at 101st and Broadway, as it's a bit easier to get into. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had.

If you do want to list some of the bigger tourist attractions you're planning to hit, I'll be happy to give you some others! Perhaps the Museum of Sex? I never made it there, myself. smile.gif

Ahh, yes, the Brooklyn Brewery! I went there with some chem eng students once. They offer tours of their site, too, on which they also tell stories about locally-brewed beer.

The normal tourist stuff seems pretty obvious, but I feel it necessary to mention the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also, get yourself some authentic New York pizza (I find it amusing that R51's food recommendation is a Mexican place, when all my New York friends complain about the lack of good Mexican food in the city). For a great (and hilarious) rundown of the best pizza places in New York, see this brilliant rant by Jon Stewart.

Now beer, there's a worthy topic of discussion. I've heard good things about Brooklyn Brewery, so you should definitely try them. And yes, you'll be in Yuengling territory; the traditional Lager is always good, but I've been meaning to branch out and try the Black and Tan and the Porter one of these days (next time I make it home to PA). There are also a TON of great breweries in the northeast, and you can probably find beers from most of them available in New York. Ommegang (Cooperstown, NY), Allagash (Portland, Maine), Harpoon (Boston), Shipyard (Portland, Maine), Victory (Downington, Pennsylvania), Troegs (Hershey, Pennsylvania), and Magic Hat (Burlington, Vermont) are all fairly close, and you'll probably see them on draft everywhere (maybe not Troegs and Victory, but if you do, I highly recommend them). You might also see Flying Dog (Frederick, Maryland) and Dogfish Head (Delaware). These are all among my favorite breweries in the country. If you like cider, you'll probably see Woodchuck (Vermont), which I highly recommend. Here's an excellent map of breweries in the United States (which still only actually has about half of the total number) which includes a blow-up of NYC proper.

Thx for the tips. Still not sure about where to get a NY pizza, but the link is quite funny nonetheless.

One day till departure....

Was just back in New York last month to visit friends and family. It sounds like you only have a few days left. One thing I might suggest is taking a helicopter tour. It's a great way to view the skyline and get a sense of the city's scope.

There used to be a great little theme restaurant near Central Park called the Jekyll & Hyde Club. Sadly, I checked and it just closed in March of this year. sad.gif They still have a bar in Greenwhich Village but I have never been to it. It would give you an excuse to go down to the Village though if you haven't been yet.

As for pizza and Italian food in general, try Little Italy. You can stop by nearby Chinatown as well which is always fun to explore. South Street Seaport is a good place for seafood with a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Last but no least, I would suggest trying to see parts of the city outside of Manhattan. Most tourists never see the outer boroughs. Yankee Stadium is in the Bronx at least, so you saw that. But there's plenty to see and do in Brooklyn and Queens as well. The neighborhoods of Willamsburgh, Sunnyside, and Astoria have all experienced a sort of revival lately. You might even want to take a ferry to Staten Island (though there's not much to do there if you aren't visiting someone). If you can get up early enough you might also consider going to Penn Station and buying a ticket to Montauk, a two-hour train ride to the easternmost edge of Long Island. Beautiful natural surroundings.

Enjoy the rest of your trip. biggrin.gif
