Here in Chicago we just banned Water Vapid IE the new Blue Light Cig which was supposed to help people quit smoking but young people started using it thinking its cool....LED blue lights mmmm.....

Young people who are non smokers were shocked people were smoking inside offices and even in restaurants. At this point I figure the late 90s babies must not remember when there was smoking everywhere even McDonalds where you had a small Non-Smoking Section and the rest of the place was for smokers.

As a kid I could remember going to my grandparents house (They are Italian so they always had a party or get together) in there basement and literally there entire basement was filled with cig smoke except in an area in the far basement where we played our video games.

I do not like the fact that people no longer have a choice when and where they can light up but I still remember as a kid choking because everyone lit up around me.

But, on the other hand, non smokers previously would have to suffer through other people's smoke. It's all well and good having designated smoking areas but, indoors at least, smoke doesn't tend to respect the boundaries of smoking areas.

People can smoke whenever they want, they just have to go outside now that's all (or to designated areas in theme parks, etc).

I remember ten years ago, when I first moved to New York from Illinois, finding that you couldn't smoke anywhere inside any business was a revelation. I'd spent so much time when I was younger in bars with friends, just being miserable because you could smoke in many places in my hometown, and I quickly discovered that I enjoyed my time so much more in places where it simply wasn't an option. Non-smoking sections are worthless in most places, if they even exist, to put a blunter edge on Cefca's point.

As for the e-cigarettes, I don't really have a strong opinion on how they should be managed relative to cigarettes. I heard that the advertising laws around them are mainly being changed in the US to match that of cigarettes, and I guess if they're treated as cigarettes in every way that's just fine with me.

Cigarette smoke goes everywhere. When I'm around it, it makes my nose and eyes itch and it always bothered me that there was such a thing as a smoking and non-smoking section when the smoke will just drift over to the non-smoking section. If people want to rot their lungs that's their choice, but don't make that choice for others by smoking in public.

Now people will go outside to smoke but then they just pile the smoke around entrances so you can't avoid it. I go to the tram stop and if people are smoking, I have to go stand away from the stop. Even in my apartment, if my window is open, some smoke inevitably comes in from who knows where. If you ask me, smoking should be completely illegal everywhere and at all times.

As a non-smoker who does not like the smell of cigarette smoke, I find it quite annoying that people ignore the no-smoking signs and use the balcony of this one building on campus to smoke. And they smoke within 25 feet of other buildings' entrances, despite clearly posted signs.

And as a non-smoker, I see smokeless cigarettes -- such as "e-cigs" -- as a socially acceptable alternative if you really want to smoke indoors or around other people. Well, assuming you are okay with people seeing you "smoking" something, I guess.

I think that some people may be concerned that people are smoking more e-cigs out of an illusion that the are somehow healthier. I know almost nothing about this either way, so I can't say much about it.

There is also some social stigma associated with smoking. While this has probably been a good thing in deterring younger people from picking up the habit, I can't help but also sympathize with people who just do feel the need to smoke but it just makes life more difficult for them. Especially since I think a good number of smokers use smoking as a way to de-stress. The increase of "sin taxes" on cigarettes probably have a similar pair of positive and negative effects.

I also don't smoke, and I'm not a big fan of the smell, but after 3 years of dating one particular ex who smoked I guess I got used to it. Anyway, I was born at the end of 1992 so most of this was not in my lifetime, but I do remember a diner in my town that had a smoking section, and despite how much the rest of my family liked the food there my mom hated the smell. She complained that if you went to that diner your clothes smelled like smoke for three washes; she may have been exaggerating. Even for years after they got rid of the smoking section she hesitated at going because I guess the smell remained in the walls. Now, they've redone the entire restaurant, and she still doesn't want to go because she "doesn't like diners". Who doesn't like diners? My mom is weird.

I may have drifted off a bit here. Smoking's bad, mmkay?

I get the feeling that the fact that the diner was smoky probably conditioned her to not like diners. It makes sense to me.
