Biography

Gau is a young boy living in the wild Veldt south and west of Mobliz, having been abandoned there as a child many years prior to the events of Final Fantasy VI. Sabin and Cyan get Gau's attention by offering him some dried meat, and Gau gives them a route to Nikeah (and eventually Narshe) by using his diving helmet to swim through the Serpent Trench. Gau's command of human languages is... substandard, but he's enthusiastic with a good heart. He finds Cyan's use of the word "thou" hysterical.

There's more! But you need to turn on spoilers to see it.

Gameplay

Gau's stats are all above-average, with particularly high Strength and Speed. Gau can wear light armor, hats, and some shields, but is the only party member unable to equip weapons (except for the LanceImpartisan) or use traditional attacks. Gau is one of the few characters that can equip the ArmorSnow Scarf, the strongest armor in Final Fantasy VI. Gau can use his Rage command to access abilities of any enemy that has been encounted in the Veldt after Gau has used his Leap command on them. The huge number of enemies available on the Veldt can make Gau's Rage list long and varied indeed, but Gau is extremely effective if you obtain Rages for powerful monsters. After using Rage, Gau is uncontrollable by the player for the remainder of the battle, but (usually) acts in a helpful manner. Surprisingly, Gau has above-average Magic and can be a decent magic user if you choose not to use Rage.

Special Skill: Rage

Gau's Rage is one of the most complex special abilities in the game. It's too involved to discuss in this space. In short, however, it's like this. Rages are learned from monsters upon which Gau Leaps on the Veldt, and only on the Veldt. The monsters that appear on the Veldt are based on the monsters you've encountered in the game; if you haven't fought a monster before, it can't be found on the Veldt. When Gau leaps a monster, he will come back in a future battle on the Veldt, having learned the Rages for every monster in the group when he leapt, and also all the Rages for each monster in the group when he came back.

When using a Rage, Gau essentially is taken over by the monster whose Rage he takes on in several ways. Gau will take the elemental attributes, inherent statuses, and special properties (like Undead) of the monster. In addition, Gau will have a 50% chance each turn of using a special attack that belongs to that monster. Any weaknesses that are applied to Gau by that monster can be overruled by buffs provided by magic or equipment.

Gau will remain as the Raged monster until he dies or the battle ends.
